Finally a post just for us cross breeders. The purpose of this topic is for cross breeders to have a place to discuss their crossbreeding programs and to share crossbreeding secrets and advice with others who may be interested in giving crossbreeding a try. Feel free to talk about your crossbreeding programs and your achievements and failures in crossbreeding.
Please remember to follow the rules of the forum and be informative and helpful. default smiley :-))

Reminder to all.

Please do not advertise sales or items wanted in this topic. I can turn a blind eye to the covers being offered (as long as they are not blatant advertisements) because we are, after all, trying to help each other progress and there is no filter on public covers for searching for crosses, but items sales and items wanted do not belong in any of the public forums and we have a sales forum for horse sales so please, lets keep our topic clean of the ads.

Thanks everyone

There are reasons for rules and everyone is expected to follow them. There will be no posting of advertisements in this topic and everyone is expected to be respectful. Any disrespect towards fellow players or moderators will not be tolerated. Anyone posting advertisements will receive a forum ban without prior warning. If breaking of rules continues to take place in this topic I will delete it.

Thank you

If anyone has personal issues with another player, or needs something back from another player(items/passes), other than covers/fills-please take it to private pms...anymore posting here will mean an instant forum ban without a warning.

A reminder that this is not the place for trading/buying/selling BMI, horses or advertising or asking for someone to train your horse.
If any of these things occur, you will be forum banned without prior warning.

I did a new cross. And today, he got a teddy bear. I'm pushing for the top 10 for barrel comps

I restarting my breeding program, and I want to know what great show jumping crosses will be. Thanks!
By Retired breeder, 6th July 2018 03:18:09

I LOVE the Shetland Selle cross. Wins a lot of jumping comps in Shetland only. Here's an example a little outdated but I think he's still in top 10
Best friesian crosses for dressage comps?

The TB would improve the gallop but the lusitano would improve all three skills.
I crossed a Vanner and a Peruvian Paso, and I seem to have a Western Pleasure horse!

I have a Marwari Mustang cross and her top 3 skills are stamina, speed, and gallop. Can someone tell me what comps she would excell in?

It looks like this mare will be best at Barrel Racing! Her skills are best for it because they match the needed skills for barrels. Also, since speed is the lower one it should help too because usually it helps (at least for me) if the first skill is lower than the other two. Her having gallop as the highest should help get wins a lot easier, as long as you watch out for stomping horses and such.
I want to create a horse that will dominate in dressage competitions.

The top 3 horses on the dressage wins leaderboard are two Standardbreds (both seem to be target trained, ie. low dressage, trot emboldened, gallop fully trained but not bold) and a fully trained Irish Hunter.

In light of that, what breeds would it be best to cross to have a good chance at getting a place on the leaderboard? And does target training improve the chance of winning?

First of all, note that the Irish Hunter is from before Lusitano replaced Irish Hunter as the top dressage breed.

If you want to win a lot of dressage comps, you want high trot, high gallop, and dressage as low as possible, though not too low or you will run out of competitions to enter. I think around 300 - 400 points in dressage is good, though you may want to check the situation with another horse first before you make decision about breeding. Higher dressage will work, too, as long as you make sure trot and gallop are even higher, or you will get crushed by pure Lusitanos.

Brumby/Lusitano crosses were popular for that purpose at one point, and Standardbred is great for the high trot.
Thank you @jgmcd03. I am trying to keep track of all my crosses that way I know what comp to enter them in default smiley ^)

Okay, so here is what I think about the question you asked. I may be 100% wrong so I wouldn't go completely on my word if you are truly concerned about this, but I don't think this one would do near as well as the horse that you posted before. Because this mare is a Mustang, she is going to be a big victim of stomping in competitions. This might really be bad for her trying to get wins. Also, the speed is the highest skill, and if you are wanting wins to come more easily, you really need speed to be the lowest of the three barrel skills. I mean you probably could get this mare to work for you the way you want it to, but it would take much more work and a lot of moving around with skills. You might could try beach rides or something to transfer skills around to make sure that speed isn't the highest one.

If you ever want to talk about this more, please feel free to PM me because I would love to provide insight to anything you may be experimenting on.

Hi, I want to start crossbreeding. Can you guys recommend me any crosses that would do well for rosettes? default smiley :)
I have a crossbred Standardbred mare (link below) and I want to increase a potential foal's trot and gallop, but am unsure what breed of sire to look for? Can someone help? Thanks.

Eileen's Crosser is a Cross Country kid! default smiley :) Playing with target training and it seems to be helping.
By Retired breeder, 10th July 2018 04:19:36

One way to try is target training. You would want the gallop to be greater than the speed though because you wouldn't be training the speed much, so that mare may not be the best.

See my mare above for an example. The first skill listed for the event is not one of her strongest and is not trained much while the others are. At least I understand it to work that way.

I'm not sure if the above link will work, so here it is again. Hopefully this works!

If you go Western you could do anything but Trails depending on what you train. Trot, Gallop and Jump could work too. That's if you target train.
If you don't then all her skills are Barreling and Cutting.
Another one for the Appaloosa elite board tomorrow after update. Not even clouded yet! He’s looking pretty.

Does anybody have success with Gypsy / App crosses? App dominant...
Wondering how their skill sets would go together. I’m not sure they’d be so complementing...

My Vanners and Vanners dominant crossers are Barrelers and Reiners, and my Appaloosas are cutters. Theoretically I'd come out with a cutter I guess. I'm trying to BLUP a vanner now that has similiar GP to my BLUP App. Might give it a try because I'm very happy with my App so I think his foals won't be half bad.

I would calculate the genetics of the potential parents you'll use so you can get an idea of the numbers you'll get with your foal and can compare that to the purebred of the dominant breed your foal will be. That will give you an idea of whether the foal will be competitive or not.

This is an old cross I bred, Apricot. She was just a means to an end of a project, so I didn't comp her much, but she did really well in Pleasure and Reining. It was likely Appy only because she would have gotten crushed otherwise. I've had quite a few Appy dominant crosses do well in Appy only Western Pleasure.
