Finally a post just for us cross breeders. The purpose of this topic is for cross breeders to have a place to discuss their crossbreeding programs and to share crossbreeding secrets and advice with others who may be interested in giving crossbreeding a try. Feel free to talk about your crossbreeding programs and your achievements and failures in crossbreeding.
Please remember to follow the rules of the forum and be informative and helpful. default smiley :-))

Reminder to all.

Please do not advertise sales or items wanted in this topic. I can turn a blind eye to the covers being offered (as long as they are not blatant advertisements) because we are, after all, trying to help each other progress and there is no filter on public covers for searching for crosses, but items sales and items wanted do not belong in any of the public forums and we have a sales forum for horse sales so please, lets keep our topic clean of the ads.

Thanks everyone

There are reasons for rules and everyone is expected to follow them. There will be no posting of advertisements in this topic and everyone is expected to be respectful. Any disrespect towards fellow players or moderators will not be tolerated. Anyone posting advertisements will receive a forum ban without prior warning. If breaking of rules continues to take place in this topic I will delete it.

Thank you

If anyone has personal issues with another player, or needs something back from another player(items/passes), other than covers/fills-please take it to private pms...anymore posting here will mean an instant forum ban without a warning.

A reminder that this is not the place for trading/buying/selling BMI, horses or advertising or asking for someone to train your horse.
If any of these things occur, you will be forum banned without prior warning.

Ooh that's also a good idea, I"ll try that next! Thanks!

Wow, that filly turned out great! She should be really good at reining competitions with that skill set!

Here is Kokoro, my latest Thoroughbred/Appaloosa rosette winning mare. I've been putting my crossbreeding project on the backburner, so it's nice to dedicate more time to this endeavor. And she's a sixth generation rosette winner. default smiley (l)

I made a dumb mistake.

I tested trot croses on preprod. Ran calculations for HOURS. Math...breeding...comparing...contrasting!

And I *thought* I came up with a cross that would out-perform Pasos & French Trotters in the trot races.

So I have been blupping like *mad* for the past week under my affix Shadowlight

...Only to run more calculations today, and discover they are slightly better than purebred pasos, but still worse than trotters...

All those aging points...all those m.arms...poofed away into nothing.
OH WELL!

RIP Underdog...Your journey was intense but short-lived.

I wouldn’t call that a waste. You have some very high quality horses that are still winning trot competitions!

Here is Saori, my latest Thoroughbred/Appaloosa rosette winner. I thought I'd experiment by crossing Kokoro with a TB/Appy stud. She's a seventh generation rosette winner.

I'm slightly dissatisfied with the skill distribution. Sadly, Saori's speed didn't come out as high as I would have liked; however, Saori is still holding her own in rosette competitions. Nevertheless, I'll probably boost her offspring's speed by crossing her with a purebred TB.

Have you thought about adding some Quarter Horse to the mix? TB/Appaloosa/QH are fantastic barrel horses so they might be good at gallop competitions!

I’m thinking about some Knabstrupper x Holsteiner crosses. Has anyone tried those?

I calculated a pairing with a top Holsteiner and Knab, and you'd get another dressage, gallop and jump skill set.

The foal would have stats similar to this (although lower, depending on what's actually in sales/covers):
stamina 3449.5
speed 3583
dressage 6613
gallop 5371.5
trot 3840.5
jump: 6488
overall: 29349

Oh wow, thank you so much! I like to sometimes do crosses that keep the top three skills while switching around the other three skills.

Hello, just came across this forum. I didn't know that we could cross-breed on Howrse. Please tell me if I can, and I would love to join this foray

Hey! I've been on Howrse for a little over a year, returning player. However, when I played previously, I was younger and mostly messed around, not really doing anything productive. In my time on this account, I've gotten more serious about my game (now there's a paradox default smiley (lol)) I'm currently on the TB team The Blazing Flames, but I'm also interested in cross-breeding. I have a few questions about cross-breeding:

1) What's really the point of cross-breeding?

2) What would be a good cross for a beginner to start out with (easier to win rosettes with, easier to BLUP, lower starting cost)

3) How can I calculate the likely outcome of a cross?

Thank you guys!

1) Cross breeding's point varies per player, and sometimes per project. Sometimes I breed a cross to win rosettes, as breeding a cross is cheaper for me than a top purebred. On some projects I wanted to flip the top skills with the 3 lower skills. And in another I wanted a horse with all the light horse and pony breeds in its family tree. We can't create new breeds from our crosses, they can't wear team affixes, and they can only rank in the skills ranking, so cross breeding is just what you choose to make of it.

2)My most recommended crosses for rosettes are KWPN dominant KWPN × Selle cross for showjumping, and Appaloosa × Thoroughbred for gallop. Those breeds usually have close to top GP available to public covers, and KWPN has breed only show jump comps.

3) If I'm working with close to top GP, I just estimate my potential foal's stats by calculating the average of the parents' GPs. This becomes more inaccurate the further you are from top GP due to the auto gain and the range your foals fall into. But I get a close enough idea of what the individual stats of my high GP foals will look like.

Breed outcome depends on the breed percentages, orders, and whether the parents have the same amount of the same breeds, or same amount of different breeds.

@pantherblk71….anyone can crossbreed. Just cover any of your mares with a stallion of any breed you’d like!

@DaughterOfTheKing

1)The point is to have fun and make whatever you want. I personally like to create fun competition horses…not necessarily rosette winners exclusively, but even semi lower level winners. I have a little Kerry Bog cross with nearly 3000 western pleasure wins and well over 400,000$ in earnings! My Amalgamated affix shows the crosses I’ve done over the years. Also, you can take a less poplar lower GP breed and cross it to a similar skill set higher GP and end up with a top ranking horse of the lower GP breed.

2)There is no best cross for beginners. For good ideas, take a look at the best horses link under achievements. Click on each breed and check out what horses are highest ranked in each individual skill set. Such as best speed in Arabians or best jump in TB…you will see many different crossbreeds in those areas and can get a good idea of stats. Don’t be afraid to play around and create whatever though. That’s the fun of it!

3)You can find calculators for skills through google, but don’t forget that you can play around with beach rides to alter individual skills how you see fit as well.

Just remember there’s no right or wrong way. Have fun and see what you come up with! Crossbreeding is one of my favorite things about this game!

I only very lightly dabble in cross breeding, but the few times that I've done it was basically because I wanted a horse with a certain skillset which purebreds don't have. In particular, for the legendary tack I had a vision of what skills the horse should have.

Altair is a Mongolian horse, they are mainly known for their endurance, being able to gallop for many hours without resting. I wanted a horse with high stamina, gallop, and trot since Genghis Khan won many battles with Mongolian horses. Because Mongolia is mostly covered in plains I thought Altair should have low dressage. There are no purebred horses with the skillset that I had in mind so I made a 25% Marwari x 75% Polish Konik. Polish Konik has low dressage and high stamina, Marwari has high stamina and gallop. The top Polish Konik group also offers above GP covers for cross breeding and Marwaris with high GP are readily available in sales.

Bucephalus was harder. The legends are mostly on how he was difficult to tame. But the legends did say that he had great stamina and given he was also a war horse, I thought he should have high stamina, and decent gallop and speed. According to the legends he was probably Thessalian, which has many sloping mountains, so I think he would also be ok in dressage, but maybe a bit lower in trot and jumping. I went with Polish Konik x Akhal-Teke x Standardbred x Marwari. The other crosses that gives the skills that I want all involve pony breeds and their public sales/covers are not very high.

I wrote up a calculator for myself which takes the skills of the breed (from the breed page), scales it to be out of 10000, then averages the skills with another breed to get what an estimated cross breed skillset would be. Obviously the final result will be different depending on the breed's available GP, but for these crosses I just want an estimate anyway. This calculator was how I figured out the breeds required to get the Bucephalus skillset I wanted.

Just curious why TB/Appaloosa? Would the dominant be Appaloosa but high stats from TB so it could win well in Appaloosa only comps?

Yes, making that particular cross Appaloosa dominant would be better.
The Appaloosa brings the gallop down too much for it to be competitive as a Thoroughbred in breed only comps.

Speaking of TB/Appy crosses, I've had a fair amount of luck with TB dominant crosses. Kokoro, Saori, and Nozomi have done quite well in breed-only rosette competitions. However, they have at least 95 percent Thoroughbred blood, with a tiny sprinkling of Appaloosa. And it took me a while to work up to rosette competitions.

Hi everyone! After a long hiatus, I’m excited to say I’m back and ready to dive into crossbreeding once again. For me, nothing compares to the creativity and satisfaction of producing purpose-bred, high-quality crossbreeds. The team breeding and purebred GP race has never held the same appeal.

I don’t limit myself to just one breed, but I’ve always especially enjoyed working with Appaloosa, Arabian, Paint, and Thoroughbred crosses.

I am excited to be back and I can’t wait to see what everyone else is working on!!
