Finally a post just for us cross breeders. The purpose of this topic is for cross breeders to have a place to discuss their crossbreeding programs and to share crossbreeding secrets and advice with others who may be interested in giving crossbreeding a try. Feel free to talk about your crossbreeding programs and your achievements and failures in crossbreeding.
Please remember to follow the rules of the forum and be informative and helpful. default smiley :-))

Reminder to all.

Please do not advertise sales or items wanted in this topic. I can turn a blind eye to the covers being offered (as long as they are not blatant advertisements) because we are, after all, trying to help each other progress and there is no filter on public covers for searching for crosses, but items sales and items wanted do not belong in any of the public forums and we have a sales forum for horse sales so please, lets keep our topic clean of the ads.

Thanks everyone

There are reasons for rules and everyone is expected to follow them. There will be no posting of advertisements in this topic and everyone is expected to be respectful. Any disrespect towards fellow players or moderators will not be tolerated. Anyone posting advertisements will receive a forum ban without prior warning. If breaking of rules continues to take place in this topic I will delete it.

Thank you

If anyone has personal issues with another player, or needs something back from another player(items/passes), other than covers/fills-please take it to private pms...anymore posting here will mean an instant forum ban without a warning.

A reminder that this is not the place for trading/buying/selling BMI, horses or advertising or asking for someone to train your horse.
If any of these things occur, you will be forum banned without prior warning.

What kind of competitions would you like to focus on? Western or classical? Otherwise, if you want a cross that's always doing well, I recommend you cross a Selle mare with a KWPN stud, the foal will turn out KWPN dominant. All trained, they do very well in KWPN-only Show Jumping competitions. default smiley (h)

I have a high GP and skills Lusitano mare. What would be the best breed to cross her with?

Thank you!!
By Retired breeder, 28th May 2018 18:55:49

Nice skills for Western comps default smiley :)
By Retired breeder, 28th May 2018 18:58:35
Also, how would a Selle mare x Criollo stud do for say show jumping and or cross country comps? Or would that combo do better in western comps?

What breed would be best to cross with a Purebred Spanish Horse mare in order to win rosettes (if that is possible)? Thanks in advance.

Thoroughbred might be possible for gallop rosettes, but you would have to try to avoid high skilled pure thoroughbreds.

You get a criollo with a slightly better speed. Probably not good for cross country, but mid-level show jumping might work. The skills may work nicely for Western, too, but pure Criollos are already that.

Hi everyone I am looking to start crossbreeding, does anyone have advice on which horse breeds I should cross? I am looking to get a cross that will do well in show jumping. Thank you!default smiley :d

I have a KWPN dominant KWPN × Selle cross that is doing pretty well in jumping comps. I also really like Thoroughbred dominant TB × Selle or TB × KWPN crosses for TB only jumping competitions. TB × Selle will give you better jumping, but I started out with KWPNs and I just really like them haha default smiley :-))

Hey there guys! I was in a conversation earlier about an experiment another player had done to get all the way back to a Purebred horse from an extreme crossbred. I have come up with my own experiment that I would like to attempt and I'm not entirely sure that it has been done before. My experiment involves the following:

Starting with Mirella (9380.01 GP Mare with 100 BLUP) covered by 10,000+GP Male

As I get a crossbred foal, I will continue to breed on down the line and hopefully encompass all breeds, minus Donkey and Drafts, into one horse and be able to trace it all the way back to the aforementioned horses. My end goal is to obtain a high GP foal with every breed.

Do you guys think that's possible?

Possible? Yes. However, only 6 (I think) breeds are shown under the horse's profile, so you would have to really keep track of everything. You would also need to have LOTS of aging points and be willing to BLUP (if you want best quality anyway).

I'm definitely willing to at least learn how to blup for each breed. Possibly a dumb question, are the blup schedules the same for crossbred horses as they are for purebred horses?

I LOVE Shetland Selle crosses. This handsome man is probably one of my best accomplishments. They're super easy to BLUP and teams are very cross friendly! Even if you breed with lower Selle stock they still do very well in comps!
I'm doing a little KWPN project and I was wondering what I could do with the horses after I finished. default smiley ^) I was thinking maybe a KWPN/Paint cross? Paint dominant? (Just BLUPping KWPN mares...) Anyone have any thoughts on that?

Yep, it is possible! Unitedwas an all-breed horse until the Kerry Bog pony came out. I could have just bred her to a Kerry Bog to get a new all-breed, but I decided to start from scratch again. I started at 350 foundation level which is why her GP is so low. By the time you get a bunch of high GP horses bred together I'm thinking it will mostly even out, but I've never sat down to crunch the numbers to see what that would look like.

I don't use schedules, but if you want to do so you'll want to follow ones with the same skill set rather than breeds, as a crossbred will not necessarily have the same skill set as its purebred counterpart. A Gypsy Vanner schedule will not be helpful if you have a Gypsy Vanner cross whose best skills are speed, dressage and gallop, for example.

What I do for any breed is train up the secondary skills while leaving the main skill low enough to enter lower difficulty competitions. Once you get wins you can then go back and finish bolding skills.

What is everyone’s favorite Quarter Horse crossbreed? I want them to be QH dominant, but depending on the cross I may switch it up.

I am on a new account so it’ll be a while before I can create affixes, but I want to create one for pure and one for crosses.

I like classical competitions.

Does anybody have any suggestions for the best breed to cross with for a curly dominant horse for dressage wins?

I'm new at cross breeding so I'm not entirely sure how it works default smiley *-)

Hi everyone!default smiley :d I really need advice, I want to breed an allround horse that are very good at all the skills.default smiley ^) I also want the skills to be as close to each other as possible. If that is possible, which breed(s) should I breed my mare with for the next foal to reach my goal?default smiley :) She´s a 50% Selle Français and 50% Tennessee Walker. Here is a link to the mare I´m going to use when she´s blupped and fully trained:
Mirage: https://www.howrse.com/elevage/fiche/?id=56263097

By the look of her inborn skills, I want to improve gallop, trot, jumping and speed as they are the lowest skills.default smiley :)
By Retired breeder, 2nd June 2018 22:40:45

TB would improve speed and gallop while Peruvian Paso would improve trot and to improve jumping you could put in a little more Selle, to find out the new GP of each skill average the GP of the parents and it will be close to that.

Nokota/Mustangs are really good at breed only SJ. Too bad there are so few comps available XD
