Finally a post just for us cross breeders. The purpose of this topic is for cross breeders to have a place to discuss their crossbreeding programs and to share crossbreeding secrets and advice with others who may be interested in giving crossbreeding a try. Feel free to talk about your crossbreeding programs and your achievements and failures in crossbreeding.
Please remember to follow the rules of the forum and be informative and helpful. default smiley :-))

Reminder to all.

Please do not advertise sales or items wanted in this topic. I can turn a blind eye to the covers being offered (as long as they are not blatant advertisements) because we are, after all, trying to help each other progress and there is no filter on public covers for searching for crosses, but items sales and items wanted do not belong in any of the public forums and we have a sales forum for horse sales so please, lets keep our topic clean of the ads.

Thanks everyone

There are reasons for rules and everyone is expected to follow them. There will be no posting of advertisements in this topic and everyone is expected to be respectful. Any disrespect towards fellow players or moderators will not be tolerated. Anyone posting advertisements will receive a forum ban without prior warning. If breaking of rules continues to take place in this topic I will delete it.

Thank you

If anyone has personal issues with another player, or needs something back from another player(items/passes), other than covers/fills-please take it to private pms...anymore posting here will mean an instant forum ban without a warning.

A reminder that this is not the place for trading/buying/selling BMI, horses or advertising or asking for someone to train your horse.
If any of these things occur, you will be forum banned without prior warning.

Welsh/Quarter/Standardbred
Bred this filly like 5 seconds ago. Not exactly what I was hoping for, but it works.

QH/Hackney
Same results as the QH/Standardbreds, but with a Hackney. My project is coming along!

Has anyone done an App/Halfie cross? I want to know how it faired in comps before attempting one.
By Retired breeder, 11th August 2017 15:50:15
Has anyone tried an Arabian/Connemara or a Welsh/Knabstrupper?
Used to do KWPN cross Knabs. I still own Lyric who was a experiment from that.

I recently bought a Standardbred/TB cross...

Check out For you, my friend

Just bred a QH/Curly cross. Didn't turn out how I expected because trot and jump reversed, and speed and stamina are .30 apart.
I've recently been breeding Selle Français stallions with my Thoroughbred mares. Currently, the offspring are still foals but based on gp, they have great numbers. Does anyone have suggestions on competitions these foals might do well in?

Take a look at these two:

Midas in Context, 8000GP

Wall Street, 9000GP

They dominate gallop competitions but also do well in jumping, and pretty much everything other than dressage.

Connemara/Arab
This is my most recent cross. Pretty proud of how she turned out.
App/TB

Super thrilled with how this cross turned out, kept the deliciously high gallop paired with some pretty decadent speed. default smiley (l)

I plan to cross her with another cross I have lying around that I'm hoping will boost up the trot nicely while not overly lowering the gallop & speed. I'll be sure to show you guys the resulting foal good or bad.

If anyone would like to use her to help with any crosses they may want to try, I'm only a pm away default smiley (y)

Hi!
Is it better to have an all around good skill set or is it better to go for top three being much better than lowest 3?
By Retired breeder, 15th August 2017 00:23:03
Here is a Link to my cross .

I have better luck with specialized horses. The issue with an all rounder is that due to the proportions of the genetics you can only get the individual skills so high. Let's say all the skills are in the 1000-1300 range and want to enter trot comps. Your horse will likely be entering against horses in the 1000 trot range or so, but could have their speed and dressage skills in the 2000s with a low trot, meaning they will beat out your horse if the trot is around the same and your horses secondary skills are at a lower level than theirs.

Grant it, it very much depends on the other horses that are entering, so it doesn't mean that all rounders are a bad thing. I have a few all rounders that have won lots of comps, but in my experience my horses with a specialized top 2 or 3 skill set are more consistent winning comps.

Does anyone have any good crosses for these breeds?
Shetland
Fjord
Purebred Spanish Horse
Connemara

I've picked up a few foals and want to find some good crosses for 'em. Me and my experiments default smiley (lol)

This little miracle!
Just born! looks like I might have found a good trot comp cross. What do you guys think?
I can finally start my second skill switching project. I decided to go with a Haflinger this time and spent over an hour the other day on a spreadsheet looking at different breed combos, none of which gave me the speed, trot and jump set I wanted.

Then I had an epiphany. I typed in a foundation Haflinger genetics, tried a couple more breed combos, and got jump to just squeeze out dressage. Fingers crossed the foals turn out as good in practice as they did on paper.

Speaking of spreadsheets, can anyone give me the formulas for calculating GP and inborn skills, etc? I want to calculate some genetics before I try a certain cross.
By Retired breeder, 16th August 2017 02:35:39
Okay! I'm back with experiment ideas.
I want to create a Nokota dominant cross that will win breed-only gallop comps, but can't find a breed with trot, speed, and dressage as top 3 skills, so I'm thinking of doing a Selle/Standardbred or a KWPN/Standardbred, or possibly a Shetland/Standardbred or replace Standardbred with Hackney on all those crosses to breed to a Nokota.
What do y'all think? Input and ideas are VERY much appreciated, as this experiment is in the planning stages.
Pasos are the only trot, speed and dressage breed.

GP=sire's GP+dam's GP divided by 2. I don't have access to the IBS formula on my phone, but you can also try to find the Howrse Plus calculator online. I use that when calculating IBS IS as it's quickerdefault smiley :)

@Legacy Ann- Thanks so much! I'll definitely use it.default smiley ;)

I put the genetics of a 9000+GP Nokota mare and a 9000+ GP Paso stallion from top teams to test, because I don't have the breeding stock at the moment. This is what I got in terms of GP:
Stamina:1392.75
Speed:1959.19
Dressage:1479.66
Gallop:710.06
Trot:2238.39
Jump:1608.63
Pretty decent cross. Of course this one would be Paso dominant, so I'll do a Nokota dominant in a minute.
By Retired breeder, 16th August 2017 03:15:33
On second thought, I might try a KWPN to replace the Paso.
