Finally a post just for us cross breeders. The purpose of this topic is for cross breeders to have a place to discuss their crossbreeding programs and to share crossbreeding secrets and advice with others who may be interested in giving crossbreeding a try. Feel free to talk about your crossbreeding programs and your achievements and failures in crossbreeding.
Please remember to follow the rules of the forum and be informative and helpful. default smiley :-))

Reminder to all.

Please do not advertise sales or items wanted in this topic. I can turn a blind eye to the covers being offered (as long as they are not blatant advertisements) because we are, after all, trying to help each other progress and there is no filter on public covers for searching for crosses, but items sales and items wanted do not belong in any of the public forums and we have a sales forum for horse sales so please, lets keep our topic clean of the ads.

Thanks everyone

There are reasons for rules and everyone is expected to follow them. There will be no posting of advertisements in this topic and everyone is expected to be respectful. Any disrespect towards fellow players or moderators will not be tolerated. Anyone posting advertisements will receive a forum ban without prior warning. If breaking of rules continues to take place in this topic I will delete it.

Thank you

If anyone has personal issues with another player, or needs something back from another player(items/passes), other than covers/fills-please take it to private pms...anymore posting here will mean an instant forum ban without a warning.

A reminder that this is not the place for trading/buying/selling BMI, horses or advertising or asking for someone to train your horse.
If any of these things occur, you will be forum banned without prior warning.

I have never been interested in crossbreeding, but is there an advantage? Is there a strategy to it too? Also, is there a way to craft the top three skills so it's tailored to a competition (like speed, dressage and Jumping for show jumping)? Is it easier to get a higher GP horse with a crossbred, so if you are looking for a good competition, rosette winning horse you are better off to crossbreed? Just wonderingdefault smiley :)
By Retired breeder, 30th August 2017 22:55:08
Also how are top three skills calculated/ determined?
By Retired breeder, 30th August 2017 22:58:53
If I wanted a good rosette winning jumper would I better better of to cross one of my Selles with a KWPN? This is the mare I would cross, I've been focusing on producing quality purebreds at the moment but...

I apologize for spamming I just have a lot of questions that I keep thinking of as I scroll through the discussion

It just depends on how you think about it. There's definitely a strategy to crossbreeding, and different breeders use different methods. I for one prefer breeding 50/50 crosses, but others might not.
There's definitely a way to do that. For example, my Standardbred crosses are mostly bred for gallop competitions because their top skills are Speed, dressage, and Gallop. I achieved this by crossing a QH and a Standardbred experimentally.

That is an interesting question. As the top teams currently possess the top GP horses, and most, if not all, have GP limits for covers, skillers, etc, we aren't able to access the top horses. However, that doesn't mean we have lower GP. I've seen a few crossbred horses that have GP that would rival some team's top GP, or at least give them a run for their money competition-wise. The thing about crossbreeding is that you have many different options, and by breeding different crosses, your horses have the ability to excell at multiple competition types. In my Standardbred example above, that horse has won a few breed-only dressage comps because of high dressage, gallop, and trot, 2 of which skills aren't highly associated with Standardbreds.
Again, I mostly crossbreed for fun, so this is based mostly on what I've seen

I've heard that KWPN/Selles did quite well in KWPN-breed-only SJ comps, and also that Paint/Selles or paint/KWPNs also did well in Paint only SJs, but I'm not quite sure on the paint ones.

What do you mean by GP limits for covers? If your horse isn't "good" enough for a certain covering, they won't see it?

So I don't have any good KWPNs that could access decent competitions anymore, I used to but that was a long time ago. Based on the mare that I showed you earlier, if you looked at her, would her skills be okay for the KWPN only competitions, if you know? I'm sorry to bombard you like this, I am just interested to see what my options are. Also, are there rosette competitions offered to just Paint horses in SJ? I'm not exactly sure where to check for this information. Thanks for all your help so far!
Being a cross bred won't affect your GP as it's all based on math. You can roughly calculate the foal's GP by taking the average of the parent's, but there is a random factor in there. So in some cases you can make a cross bred with GP higher than a purebred depending on what you can get your hands on.

Paints won't have show jumping rosette available for that breed only because their jump skills aren't high enough to boost a comp's prestige to rosette level. NOT unless the EC owner changed their show jump rosette comp to Paint only after it reached rosette but they'd risk tanking their prestige if they did so.

@Funny Penguin-
Most teams just refuse to give out covers from horses above a certain GP

You'd get some very good crosses out of that mare, KWPN or otherwise. If you could find a 8500+ GP, 100 BLUP stallion to cross her with, you'd get a nice SJ horse, as both KWPN and Selles are best at SJ.

I'm happy to help! No worries. default smiley ;)

@Legacy Ann-
Thanks for clearing that up. I don't work with paints or rosette horses often.

You betdefault smiley :)

Since there is still no word on the breed genetic issue yet, I decided to finish my skill switched Haflinger project. I had to Bolt my original mare to a stallion and blup another foal so the breed genetics listing would give me a Haflinger instead of a Knabstrupper.

After breeding Mr. Owhcin (Knab x Brumby) to Outcapers (Haflinger x Paso) I got my Haflinger foal
Twimbrel
His top 3 skills are speed, trot and jump. Jump barely beat out dressage with a 5 point lead.

My newest little experiment
Interesting cross, for sure.

I'm slightly confused.
I bred multiple Shagya/QH crosses.
This is my most recent, born like 30 seconds ago. He has a twin I'm going to bolt.
This is the foal bred on 8/22.
Both are the same cross, from the same dam with different sires. Their skill set is different.
Maybe it's the genetics issue going on? I'm not sure. What do you think?

They both have stamina, dressage, gallop skill sets.

Their individual genetics are different due to the stallion's vast difference in GP. They're about 1000 off from each other so they'll produce different numbers with the same dam.

You could try any breeds you like for crossbreeding - some players look to get more skills by crossing a breed that is stronger in some areas than others default smiley (y)

Genetic Potential is the level of skills a horse will get once it has been trained. There is a whole section about it in the game help pages for you to read.

Ah whoops I had read the post wrong, sorry!

What's the best breed to cross a knab with to make an alright sj horse?

^^ Something that would help their speed, as that isn't in their top 3 skills, and is needed for jump comps. Have a look at breeds that have high speed, but don't loose too much on dressage and jump skill.

I'd personally try a KWPN, Selle, Shetland, or I have a Knab/Arabian or a Knab/Appaloosa/Arabian that was decent in SJ. I'll try to get a link.

I have a few pure Lusitanos that I would like to breed for any western competition(s), but I'm struggling with finding the right breed to cross them with? Any ideas?
Thank you

I might give the selle a try since I wasn't super happy with knab/KWPN, ^^

Just waiting on one win to come through for this girl so I can age her up. Wins have taken forever. even with the help of fillers. But, then I can switch my focus to the male half of this cross.
Bred this filly minutes ago. She's named after Tex from Red vs Blue, a woman who kicks butt like I've never seen before! And her name is part of a line from Tex's official theme song, which is "On Your Knees".
