Hello all fellow schliech lovers! I set up this topic for people who want to talk about the amazing models! Share your collection, tips, and your favorites in this topic! Enjoy!

I'm so excited! I came home tonight, checked the mail, and found my first Schleich of 2021! Its not a new model, its an old one, and no, it is not the one i mentioned before that many might find "less desirable." Its actually one i ordered in the days after i ordered the other, but it came in the mail first.

Click to display
Its the Gavial Crocodile! It was available from 2000-2004 (about a decade before i even knew what a Schleich was!). This little booger is one i have tried to find on Ebay in the past, as i was always fascinated with his super skinny long snout, but the few that were available were too expensive, especially because they were international and had higher shipping rates. I got lucky, and found this guy in a different Ebay search, and he was in my country (USA). I recognized the picture, but the seller had him listed as a caiman, and neither "Gavial" or "crocodile" was in the name. I've heard of caimans, but i never thought to search for that name to find this Gavial...perhaps its another name for it, or it is a type of caiman? I don't know, but my Schleich Collector's Book lists it exactly as Gavial Crocodile, so that's what i'm going with. Very glad he is finally in my collection, and that although he's missing his tag, he otherwise appears to be in perfect conditiondefault smiley :)

I'm sorry for the long "story"...i just get so excited lol.

Btw is anyone else participating in NaMoPaiMo? I’ll definitely participate but I just haven’t decided on a model yet, I’ve got so many options so I’m stuck between about 3
My little undesirable came in today!default smiley ^)

Its the Schleich Rat! He was available from 2002-06. He's tagless but in great shape outside of one small spot of slight wear. He joins his cousin, the little white mouse that's already in my collectiondefault smiley :)

I got a couple more Schleich coming in sometime as well, so i'll keep you posted!default smiley :)

The reason I wanna sell them is cause I dont want them rotting away in a box in the attic, cause I possibly wont have any space in my room when we changed my room and I cant put them in a box in my closet cause I am getting a smaller closet and my parents still wanna put some stuff in my closet, they said I would get the same closet as my sister has and with the amound of clothes I have plus the stuff my parents want to put in my closet once I have it I will only have a little bit of hanging space and thats not enough, so no space for mu schleich also my mom said that I would get a bookcase for my schleich but I wont have space for that cause I already have a bookcase for just my books and I am gonna need a bigger desk so that my hamster cage can sit on my desk. like.... no space atall cause my room is getting smaller (like a lot), I am sorry for my little rant.

Awww, its ok to rant a little...we all do sometimes! Sounds like a very frustrating situation. Downsizing is hard. However, my thinking about "rotting away in a box in the attic" is different. I view it more as an investment, tucking them into a safe space where they stay in new or nice condition as they eventually retire and gain value over the years. Then, later, you find them and take a trip down memory lane, and you might just have more space by then. If you still want to sell them, they might just fetch more than they currently would, like if they are now vintage. But of course, if space is at a premium now, then maybe that's not an option. That's understandable. I sure dont want to lose you as one of our collectors in this forum though!default smiley :(

I had only about 25 or so Schleich’s due to lack of space, now they’re all boxed up default smiley :'( I had this lovely Lipizzaner Stallion for 2004 and although he had quite a bit of wear, he was a very pretty boy! Here’s what he looked like when his model was released:

I was lucky enough to have a barn, plenty of jumps, sooo many fences, a paddock, trailer and truck, the vet clinic, ect. You can see why there was a lack of space default smiley xd

I love Vanners! That's a lucky kid indeed!

That's gorgeous! I'm sorry you had to box them up! i don't have much more space myself...right now I'm basically sticking them anywhere they will fit ha ha. But the lack of space is actually more specific to my Breyers cause so many of them are much larger. I have a little room left for Schleich still.default smiley :)

The "attic" is my parents bedroom and they always say they dont have any space there to put things away, I mostly own older models, which already have had their prices gone up a bit, since being retired,

I see. Still though, how much more might they go up in value in the future? But i understand you are in a tight spot, literally. So i wish you good luck in selling them! May you find the right buyer who will pay well what they are worth!default smiley :)

I got a new Schleich set today, and you guys will NEVER guess what it is! This is a set i never knew or even suspected Schleich made.

Click to display
Its the Schleich Christmas Nativity Scene! I am fond of nativity scenes, so i was very happy to find one! And surprisingly, there are no Schleich animals that come with it lol, just the people characters. Sounds like it might have been a good way to include an exclusive animal or something but oh well lol. The one i got is like new, in top condition, even the box, and exceeded my expectations so i am happy with itdefault smiley :)

Ugh, sorry, i'm not on my home computer and i can't get a pic to work...anyway, its a very nice set! My main frustration, however, is that i cannot find a year it was made anywhere on it. The pieces all have the Schleich mark, but no year. Nor is it anywhere on the box. Very odd to me. I couldn't find it through google either. Guess i'll have to keep looking!

Oh yeah, i forgot to say...I wish Schleich had like a suggestion box or something somewhere! I really badly want Schleich to make a Marwari horse, with its cute distinctive ears. Ive been breeding my Marwari line on this game since 2012. And of all the model horses i've seen in my life, i don't remember seeing any modeled after a Marwari. Except, of course, for the ones i just discovered CollectA and Breyer has made in the past, and i'm on the hunt for one! Now if only Schleich would sculpt one...actually, not just one...preferably a Marwari family!default smiley (7)

Yeah a Marwari model or family would great, but it shouldnt look like the bad models now, it should look like how schleich was about 10 years or so ago

I wouldn't lump them all together to say none of the new ones are good any more...as if Schleich creators are incapable of quality now. They'd have to be judged individually. The fact is, ten years ago is ten years ago now, and that ten years will never be back. We only go forward. But even if time passing was equal to less than perfect models, I'd rather have a not-quite-as-good-as-the-olden-days Marwari model(s) than none at all. default smiley :)

I used to adore Schleich models, but the new horse releases are unfortunately quite terrible. There’s only one or two I would actually want to pick up! For me, realism and quality was what drew me to Schleich, and its sad to see that the newer models lack both of those aspects. I got the (palomino) paint mare recently, and her anatomy is not great! Her head is not anything like a horse’s head, and her body is so thin and long. Her paint job is even worse — beige-ish splodges of paint with zero shading, detail or care! It’s quite clear that their horses are now only geared towards children.

Marwari’s are very distinct in appearance, and I think Schleich would be unable to meet it, unless they reverted to how they did their earlier models (pre-2018). It would most likely look very cartoon-ish and incredibly anatomically incorrect, like most of their HorseWorld branded models.

However, CollectA are a similar size to Schleich, and they have a lovely Marwari stallion! A little unrealistic in colour choice, but he looks quite good. And Breyer’s version is spot on! I’d love to see a family of Marwari’s brought out from both of them ((:
Does anyone have tips for repainting a schleich horse? Also, I'm a beginner so all I have is acrylic paint and regular painting brushes, is that enough?

I'm not any help as i don't do custom paint jobs, but others have recently talked about it...maybe one of them can help!default smiley :)

Hmmm, must be a case of ignorance is bliss... i know almost nothing about horses in real life, and have barely even ever met a real horse. So, knowing nothing about perfect conformation or the finer aspects of anatomy, i am basically blind to the flaws of my model horses, so i guess i am free to enjoy them more. In this case, it would seem my lack of knowledge is to my advantage! Its like artwork...the artist and their "professional critics" artist friends may look at a piece and cringe at the "obvious" flaws, but all my untrained eye can see is the pretty artwork!default smiley xd I do notice that Marwaris have a more distinct look...i would like to see Schleich at least attempt one. Also, i did recently become aware that CollectA (sold by Breyer in North America) and Breyer have some Marwari models...i am currently on the hunt for the CollectA one, and hope to someday get one by Breyer, although i think that star is a little more distant. I did manage to score some new models today! I got the Breyer by CollectA Sugarbush Draft foal, which i love. (i do have Breyer and CollectA collections, along with Schleich). I also scored the Breyer traditional known as Lightning Ridge, which is a retired 2019 Limited Edition horse, limited to 3000 pieces! I am a newer Breyer collector (i think just a couple years now) so i don't know where he falls on a "good catch" scale of 1-10, but he sounded like he might someday be a fairly coveted piece to have in my collection! I hope so anywaydefault smiley :)

One thing i factor into the pieces i buy of any brand is the future potential value, which is why i have higher standards i like the piece to have before i will buy it. I don't by a piece that has more than minimal scuffing or paint rubbing or imperfections. Certainly nothing broken or missing or cut into...I saw one Schleich the other day that had crazy teeth grooves and chunks in the leg from a kid biting it! Or maybe it was a dog, i don't know.default smiley xd I prefer an item that still has a nice tag, but will buy one without if it is older and in excellent condition. Once mine, i keep them in the best condition i possibly can, and do not remove the tag (except for when i briefly did as a new collector, which i regret). Its kinda like i'm investing as well as collecting. I'm reminded of those extra headlines after a news or facebook post that say "If you still have this vintage toy, its now worth this much!" but when you read the article, you find that the only way you get that nice price is if the toy is in mint condition, still in its original box lol. Which almost never happens when a child gets a new toy!default smiley xd I'm actually scared of the day a young kid would show up at my house...the way my models are taking over...all the kid will see is TOYS! and get all grabby, and i have to be the crabby lady that keeps them from touching anything.default smiley :odefault smiley (li)default smiley xd

my collection partially still has tags. i started leaving them on in 2019 before that i still kinda played with them tough before 2019 i never removed any exclusive tags. i have had litte kids see my collection and if they wanna play i just give them one of my horses thats already scratched or rubbed from when i played with them

as for the newer schleich they definitly tend to have weird anatomy flaws and i feel like the quality control has gone down significantly. I have 2 horses with misshapen bellies, the horses in my 2019 adventcalender were not in a sealed bag nor had cardboard between the legs which led to my mare having difficulties standing up and the amount of paint job mistakes ive seen recently has gone up. like horses that have only one eye painted, markings that are messy or seetrough a friend of mine has the 2018 dartmore mare with a creme nose instead of black.
but there are still horses that show schleichs potential, the sculpting on the 2020 trakehner gelding is real nice for example. and i definitly want to get this years sorraia mustang and silver draft mare

i found out which year it was released.
it was released 2006 and retired 2007/2008 depending on the source tough i think its more likely to have retired in 2007 because 1 i trust this source more than the others and the set isn't in my 2008 collectors guide tough unfortunatly that is the oldest one i have so i can't say if the set was actually in them as collectors guides only show wider release products. exclusive sets or pieces are never really in them

Wow, i've never seen one missing an eye or anything like that! I definitely would avoid buying one with that if i was aware of it!default smiley :o I never did play with mine, since i was an adult before i discovered them. Also, i would agree, some do seem to look better than others, even to someone like me.

I hear you! I've gotten a couple pieces in the mail that i was disappointed with...a crooked leg and/or won't stand. I love to hold and inspect it before i invest in it. That's why i so much prefer a brick and mortar store if possible. That, and i hate having to pay shipping!default smiley xd

I had never heard of this breed, so when i briefly googled it, it said it is a new American breed, whose first foal was born in 1999!

Also, this is the Breyer LE horse, Lightning Ridge, that i also got!

He looks slightly different in different lighting, due to the coloration.
