Finally a post just for us cross breeders. The purpose of this topic is for cross breeders to have a place to discuss their crossbreeding programs and to share crossbreeding secrets and advice with others who may be interested in giving crossbreeding a try. I have a GV/Paint/Arab who is decent with Reining and WePl and a TB/Marwari/Paint Arab who is waffling between Barrels and Reining. I'm getting the feel and targeting would be helpful with paint crosses.

Out of curiosity, how much effort and generations would it take to take a 50/50 line and breed it into a 51-60/40-49 line?

I am curious because I really like where my Legacy Project is but I am sick and tired of getting so many rejects since they need to be Fri dominant.

I just did some math and it would take 4 generations to get to a 56.25 Fri 43.75 KWPN cross.

I could then get there with the foal being a stud and remove all other studs from my breeding program. Then I would breed to my 50/50 mares and continue breeding the line which would leave me with foals with about 51-53% Fri blood; just enough to ensure Fri but not enough to skew the project completely.

My only issue is that if I do that, then it would be extremely difficult to add new blood every once and a while. Usually I add blood because, for the life of me, I cannot keep up even slightly with the GP race. That is why Bagheera is almost 5,000GP higher than the rest of my horses; I had found someone that was willing to breed me a specific cross of higher GP.

I could still add new blood every now and again, but I run the risk of eventually getting back to solid 50/50 crosses which I do not want.

I'm just not too sure what to do right now. Put the effort into removing all possible chances of rejects or just continue along with what I am doing?

I am working on that with my French Drummer line. I like the 50/50 Perch/Drum crosses for Western comps, but I don't like the looks of the Drum horses. I'm taking it down to 51/49, which will take 6 gens, but only three "foundation" horses; one pure Perch mare, one FI stud, and one F1 mare. I'm breeding the percentage foals back to the F1 crosses.

Yes.

Whatever gets the job done the quickest with the highest GP when weighed against the inputs (APs, items, etc.). It's an incestuous little scheme here.

Sent my very first crossbred mare to heaven today. She was a Paint/Arab who liked Barrels and Reining. Her name carrying and coat sharing daughter looks more like a cutter or galloper. default smiley :)

I usually back breed. It all kind of depends on the purpose of your breeding, like AdmYrrek said. I'm going mostly for GP increase but also using different kinds of crosses so I typically back breed when I want to get back to a specific breed (Connies). I will sib breed if the genetics (type of breed mix and GP) would make for a better cross. Outcrossing is usually my go to just because I like to introduce new lines and new mixes.

Ugh, my TN Morgan is now stuck in a couple "rookie" comps that were before the changes. If anyone can get these running, I'd greatly appreciate it.

What breed would cross well with a Tennessee Walker?? I am wanting to cross breed a Tennessee Walker but make it a good skiller for English comps. But i don't know if i should use a Thoroughbred, KWPN, Selle Francis or if i should use a different breed. Any tips or advice??

You could try the selle which would get it in high sj comps, or you could try crossing with a paso for trot comps (and easy wins in lower gallop). But it depends on what comp your aiming for default smiley :)

Any Prix breed will probably be pretty popular, especially for the Classical Prix races. Western comps don't seem to get the attention they deserve.

They really don't. It's one of the main reasons I've shelved my Western Morgans for the time being. I remember having Barrel Racing alongside the Classical Comps many ages ago. My how times have changed.

Hey everyone!

I'm an old howrser who recently made a new account, so I'm trying to find a project or something like that to take my focus on here.

I'm interested in getting into cross breeding. Could anyone give me a quick rundown on it? Why do you choose to do it? Is it better than purebreds?

I'd really like to figure out a good western pleasure crossbreed as well, if anyone has some tips on that. I have several nice paint horses if anything could be done with that cross.

I have a list you can maybe work from. As to answer your questions; rundown? Meaning anything specific? I choose to do it just for the fun of it. I have had several different projects, sadly a good portion are shelved at the moment just due to lack of comps set specifically for them. I wouldn't say they're better than pures. Pures have their advantages of being, well, pure therefore their value in sales and the like are higher. But if I can take a pure and cross it with another horse, it can easily shine on its own by like say making a Gallop racing TB into a XC TB.
