Finally a post just for us cross breeders. The purpose of this topic is for cross breeders to have a place to discuss their crossbreeding programs and to share crossbreeding secrets and advice with others who may be interested in giving crossbreeding a try. Feel free to talk about your crossbreeding programs and your achievements and failures in crossbreeding.
Please remember to follow the rules of the forum and be informative and helpful. default smiley :-))

Reminder to all.

Please do not advertise sales or items wanted in this topic. I can turn a blind eye to the covers being offered (as long as they are not blatant advertisements) because we are, after all, trying to help each other progress and there is no filter on public covers for searching for crosses, but items sales and items wanted do not belong in any of the public forums and we have a sales forum for horse sales so please, lets keep our topic clean of the ads.

Thanks everyone

There are reasons for rules and everyone is expected to follow them. There will be no posting of advertisements in this topic and everyone is expected to be respectful. Any disrespect towards fellow players or moderators will not be tolerated. Anyone posting advertisements will receive a forum ban without prior warning. If breaking of rules continues to take place in this topic I will delete it.

Thank you

If anyone has personal issues with another player, or needs something back from another player(items/passes), other than covers/fills-please take it to private pms...anymore posting here will mean an instant forum ban without a warning.

Edit by pixiesbite

A reminder that this is not the place for trading/buying/selling BMI, horses or advertising or asking for someone to train your horse.
If any of these things occur, you will be forum banned without prior warning.

This is a crossbreeding question, but if I breed a bunch of gallop breeds together (QH, TB, Welsh Pony, etc.) would it make the supporting (non dominant) skills weaker and strengthen the three dominant (gallop, speed, dressage)? Or would it just make the supporting skills even out with the dominant ones?

I love her! She has a great skill set. Are you planning on entering rosette comps or breeding her for crosses? I think she may do pretty well in rosettes.

This depends on what the top three skills of the horses are. For example, QH is gallop/dressage/speed and TB is the same (in a different order I believe) so they would just help the top three skills and the bottom three skills would even out among where they are placed for the horses. If you add Trake in, for example as they have Gallop as their top too, you will improve jumping as jump is one of Trake's top three skills. Does that make sense?

The offspring will roughly get an average of the parent's skills across the board.
what would the breed be if these are the parents:
dad-75% tb 25% Arab
mom-75% QH 25% PSH

i know what 5050 and 25252525 are but this isn't that but will have 2 different breeds with same %
thanks

I experimented and breed these 2 together:
dad-75 tb 25 arab
mom-75 kwpn 25 psh
foal-tb
so it was the dad. is this how it always comes out?

I'm considering trying her in some rosettes. I went ahead and beached into gallop and actually finished her out today.

Not always, but possibly for that type of cross. Can't say I recall breeding a 75/25 to another 75/25 with all 4 different breeds, but I'm guessing the match was treated like a purebred breeding. The top two breeds had the same percentage so it took the sire's breed like it would were you breeding two purebreds.

I'm a bad bad person. I forgot all about this guy, so I finally finished him. default smiley xd and he's ready for covers. I gave him a name to reflect how ya know.. I forgot him.

The Forgotten Man

I think I'm done with my QH mare, but need to make sure lol I think I bred her to every breed...

I'm close to finishing my next group of 8 crosses, so we'll see what new pretties I can come up with. Only 2 are mares though. A Walker of some sort, and a Mari of some sort.

I should be free to start my secret 4 way next week, if I can figure out a perfect way to set up a spreed sheet. Ok, I'll shush now.

I'm thinking about making my mare Demon Song's next foal be crossbred. What breed of horse should I breed her with to get the best foal? Arabian, possibly?

I feel like this is a broken record lol

I keep saying the same thing.

It depends on what you're breeding for. Different things require .. different things.

You ask a simple question that has a complex answer.

When I breed I look for what I want out of an animal. You want to cross for speed but speed isn't everything. If you want them to be good gallop racers then you can focus on certain breeds like TB's, QH, Welsh, etc) BUT you also need to take into account the other 2 skills.

Here's a breakdown of how the skills generally fall:

Western

Barrel Racing= Speed, Stamina, Gallop
Cutting= Stamina, Dressage, Speed
Trail Class = Dressage, Trot, Jumping
Reining = Gallop, Dressage, Stamina
Western Pleasure = Trot, Stamina, Dressage

Classical

Trot = Trot, Speed, Dressage
Gallop = Gallop, Speed, Dressage
Dressage = Dressage, Trot, Gallop
Cross Country = Stamina, Dressage, Jumping
Show Jumping = Jumping, Dressage, Speed

This gives you an idea of what skills to look for. In addition I also look for animals with higher GP's but that do well in competitions. I also only breed horses once they have been fully trained in all of their skills (not just the 3 primary), and have been fully blupped. This maximizes the skills and genetics passed onto any offspring. You are welcome to PM with questions. default smiley :)
