Finally a post just for us cross breeders. The purpose of this topic is for cross breeders to have a place to discuss their crossbreeding programs and to share crossbreeding secrets and advice with others who may be interested in giving crossbreeding a try. Feel free to talk about your crossbreeding programs and your achievements and failures in crossbreeding.
Please remember to follow the rules of the forum and be informative and helpful. default smiley :-))

Reminder to all.

Please do not advertise sales or items wanted in this topic. I can turn a blind eye to the covers being offered (as long as they are not blatant advertisements) because we are, after all, trying to help each other progress and there is no filter on public covers for searching for crosses, but items sales and items wanted do not belong in any of the public forums and we have a sales forum for horse sales so please, lets keep our topic clean of the ads.

Thanks everyone

There are reasons for rules and everyone is expected to follow them. There will be no posting of advertisements in this topic and everyone is expected to be respectful. Any disrespect towards fellow players or moderators will not be tolerated. Anyone posting advertisements will receive a forum ban without prior warning. If breaking of rules continues to take place in this topic I will delete it.

By Retired breeder, 20th May 2010 17:48:18

By Retired breeder, 20th May 2010 17:50:38
Speed and Dressage are bolded ! Im so excited! he already has 530 skills , and i haven't even done the Gallop and Sloped Rides!
By Retired breeder, 20th May 2010 17:51:01
It's unlikely as Monty is only 25% paint so his speed isn't as good as my mare's....if you trained up jumping (dont do this until you have your 20 wins) he could beat her in SJ
By Retired breeder, 20th May 2010 17:53:06
yea. But he still has Decent speed default smiley ;) But you never know! He could beat her in Trot one of these days default smiley ;)
By Retired breeder, 20th May 2010 17:54:04
Only if trot is trained
By Retired breeder, 20th May 2010 17:55:16

I breed a cross between mustangs and I hunters for the dressage skills. I feel this helps the mustangs in the jump and barrel races. I currently have 3 in my program, the others sold fast, and they are doing very well. fell free to pm me about them or how i determine who to breed with whom.

I really like your horse itunes
By Retired breeder, 21st May 2010 00:28:53
I am so jealous of itunes's horse!
This is long post and hopefully will be read and taken in the manner it was intended.
bridget-xxx ~ I am not disagreeing with you over your assertion that your monster is truly awesome, but I would like to present a few interesting facts before you make statements about beating fully blupped and bolded pure bred Friesians.
My 5 year old Friesian, Turwaithion with little trot training has current trot skill level of 82.96, bolded speed of 86.27, and bolded dressage of 249.11. Current bonuses for trot are +13. As you can also see, he does have over 20 wins.
Im-a-be-a-monster is 16 years 3months with a current trot skill level of 75.84, bolded speed of 196.76 and bolded dressage of 253.04. Current bonuses for trot are +25.
Here is how trotting races are calculated:
* Trotting race
o 5 % : age
o 45 % : trotting (skills + bonuses)
o 30 % : speed (skills + bonuses)
o 20 % : dressage (skills + bonuses)
Im-a-be-a-monster has been trained to run against bluppers who have lower skills than the average five year old Friesian. Typically Friesians bold at speed and dressage around 5, so that means your horse is usually running against unbolded Friesians. If you blanket all the empty races you can, some one must put their horses in with yours. Yes, I do realize that you don’t do that all the time. Obviously I have managed and continue to manage to successfully blup pure bred and cross bred Friesians, so I do not have an issue with “so called“ monster horses. However, stating that you can beat pure bred Friesians in spite of their large trot skills is misleading to fellow cross breeders. Yes, you can beat pure bred Friesians simply because your older horse is faster than them and their trot and speed skills are lower!
You may remember that I defended you when you were initially training Im-a-be-a-monster, so please understand that my purpose in this post is not to cause a disagreement but rather to clear up any misconceptions that may be caused by a comment such as “I tend to blanket all the races every time I work her so I'm never sure who or what she races against. she does appear to be thrashing the top friesian horses - even the fully trained ones (impressive since she has low trot skills and they have tons )”
Im-a-be-a-monster couldn’t run in a trot race against a fully trained Friesian because their skill levels are too far apart. For example, Thenidiel at 16 years and 3 months has a current trot skill level of 234.12, speed of 86.13, and dressage of 275.48. Current bonuses for trot are +13.

DressageBeast! Has her wins now,and I'm just working on bolding herdefault smiley ^)Plus I gave her a diamond apple.
By Retired breeder, 21st May 2010 02:16:56
I just bred a double star all star filly! The only catch is that she has basically no IBS because her father wasn't BLUPed. At least I know what will work well when the stallion is BLUPed.

So many horses............... so little time. Of the horses I saw, they are great.
I have found a system that works wonderfully for getting comp wins in crosses, and I have used it faithfully from the first day it was suggested to me.

First of all, I always always ALWAYS finish out dressage and speed first, then work on those short trots. I do NOT do stamina. High stamina pitches you into the high-stakes cross-country races that take up too much of your horse's energy too early. Keep stamina low until you've got your 20 wins.

Secondly, I do the showjumps first no matter what breed I am working. You can squeeze a lot of jump comps into a single day, and get that dressage and speed bolded in short order to help you out with the speed races and XCs. Dressage and speed help your horse win, but are not factored into the skill level requirements for the races, so I wind up in races with horses of similar jump/gallop/trot but much lower speed. Advantage!

Up to this point, I do all breeds the same way. Now comes the divergence.

The trick to crosses is that they are usually weaker in their dominant breed's biggest skill (for example, Friesians and their infamous trot, since we seem to deal with a lot of them here). However, they usually out-perform their dominant breed in places where that breed is weak.

To elucidate, my Frie crosses always have lower trot than purebreds, but more speed. Since I usually have some Hunter in the mix too, dressage is about equal. So I will generally go for the speed-oriented comps, trot and gallop. Since my horse will have a lower trot than normal but a higher speed, it will generally go into races with horses that have lower total skills, and thus will have a better chance of winning. Same with gallop - my horse may have gallop skill similar to a purebred, but I will generally have them beat in speed.

The trick is to figure out which skills you have *improved* in your cross versus purebred horses, and use those skills to dominate the comps. Get some age on the horse first, as that little 5% may make a difference (I usually start races between 5 and 6 years old, no sooner), and watch for those Tubs O' Grease. You may not win every race, but you'll win enough of them to finish BLUP quite handily.

My Frie crosses generally stomp their way through showjump, gallop, and trot, and don't do as well in XC because speed is not a factor in XC comps. By the time I have gotten all my skill gains from the speed races, I usually (9 times out of 10) have 20-plus wins with plenty to spare. I may not be winning huge purses at this point, but that comes later. Heh heh heh.

I typically cross arabs and appas, but someone (NO idea who!) got into my account and cross-bred about 20 of my untrained mares.
the foals? about half of them aren't worth too much, but i've had a personal breakthrough with my breeding. other than the fact that it put the mares' training behind, it didnt turn out too baddefault smiley ;)

I was originally cross breeding Hanos and paints for no particular reason but switched to Hano and Irish crosses to try and get good jumping horses with a high dressage (I also didn't feel like competing with the purebreeders so that is why I started doing cross breeds). Has anyone had success with this cross? I have two fillies that are still really young and they are my first generation so I'm not sure how they will do (both parents are top stars of their breed, bred at 100 blup and bolded skills with tears)
By Retired breeder, 21st May 2010 14:48:18
Just bred this amazing filly from my DressageBeast and I did not use tears to see how the foal would turn out and with 20 cloudsshe should make 303+ dressage skillsdefault smiley :oAnd the sad thing is she cant even sell for 500 and 2 passdefault smiley :@That shows me how many people dont realize how great crosses are.
By Retired breeder, 21st May 2010 15:42:31
I had a bunch of awesome crosses, all tear bred and I could not shift them at all. One of them his twin is ranked no.1 for stamina on elite paint boards. I've since stopped breeding to sell because of this.
