Finally a post just for us cross breeders. The purpose of this topic is for cross breeders to have a place to discuss their crossbreeding programs and to share crossbreeding secrets and advice with others who may be interested in giving crossbreeding a try. Feel free to talk about your crossbreeding programs and your achievements and failures in crossbreeding.
Please remember to follow the rules of the forum and be informative and helpful. default smiley :-))

Reminder to all.

Please do not advertise sales or items wanted in this topic. I can turn a blind eye to the covers being offered (as long as they are not blatant advertisements) because we are, after all, trying to help each other progress and there is no filter on public covers for searching for crosses, but items sales and items wanted do not belong in any of the public forums and we have a sales forum for horse sales so please, lets keep our topic clean of the ads.

Thanks everyone

There are reasons for rules and everyone is expected to follow them. There will be no posting of advertisements in this topic and everyone is expected to be respectful. Any disrespect towards fellow players or moderators will not be tolerated. Anyone posting advertisements will receive a forum ban without prior warning. If breaking of rules continues to take place in this topic I will delete it.

Thank you

If any of these things occur, you will be forum banned without prior warning.

Aaaaaaand she's finished! I fully bolded and BLUPed her because I had some spare APs!

Going to breed her to increase the gallop, but still keep stam and dress high for reigning! Hopefully her offsrping will do well on the boards etc.

Hello! Looking for a little advice;

I have a high skill, high gp arabian purebred. She does great at western competitions; she has a low trot (primary skill), but really high stamina and dressage (secondary). I want a foal that will absolutely boss the western pleasure competitions;

** I was wondering what you guys think I ought to cross her with so as to get a very low trot but still high stamina and dressage? **

I was thinking either akhal-teke or gypsy vanner since they fit the bill. Oh - and another thing;

/////when I do, will it matter whether the arabian is the girl or the boy?
How does the male being one and the female being one breed impact it?
Ie. will the skillset be in a different order if the sire is the arabian and the mare the other?

Thanks a bunch!

The skill set of a GV/Arab cross would really just be the same as a pure bred Arabian, because their skills are virtually the same.

As for how a stallion affects the foals, in a 50/50(or any time all breeds are equal) cross, the foal will always take on the stallions breed as its dominant breed.

The only way for a foal to gain the mare's dominant breed, is if the mare breed is greater then that of the stallions, or, their combined total is greater the that of the stallion.

Example:

GV dominant Mare (50% GV/ 50% TB)
+
KWPN dominant Stallion (50% KWPN/ 50% GV)
=
GV dominant foal (50% GV/ 25% TB/ 25% KWPN)

So the above example shows one scenario where the foal takes on the mother's dominant breed, becuase the combined total of GV in both parents out ranks the stallions dominant breed.

Thanks 4 winds! But does which is dominant effect the skills whatsoever? default smiley :o
From what I have seen, in a 50/50 cross, it will make a little bit of a difference. Let me get you a link of two TB/Arabian crosses. One will be Arab dominant, and the other will be TB dominant.

Here is a TB dominant foal

Here is an Arab dominant foal

They are both 50/50, but is you look at the GP of the top three skills, you will see that the order of highest skills are different, but bearly.

The TB's top three skills are in the order of
Gallop
Dressage
Stamina

The Arab's tops three skills are the same, but in a different order.
Gallop
Stamina
Dressage

So the TB has a better Dressage then the Arab, and the Arab has better Stamina then the TB, but it is very minor. This is the slight difference the dominant breed makes.

Now this foal is still 50% Arabian, but is crossed with three other breeds. It's skills are starting to return back to the Arabian skill set becuase the Arabian blood is much more dominant.

I hope this helps.

Thank you so much! Think I'll try breeding her tomorrow default smiley :d
Haha! How did this happen?!

I like to look at the offspring of my stallions, and see what other people bred. This foal is a paint out of

A Marwari dominant mare (50% Marwari/ 50% Paint)

And a Gypsy Vanner dominant stallion (37.5% GV/ 25% TB/ 12. 5% QH/ 12.5% Arab/ 12.5% KWPN)

So why is he not a Marwari?! Check him out!

There are cases where a foal takes its GrandDam's breed rather than sire. But I forget the why and how.

I was going to breed Lusitano's with Shagya Arabs to improve trot and gallop since they're low in the rankings plus I could make wins easier in dressage competitions.

Anyone's thoughts?

I would be happy if someone could help me out and help me breed my desired cross or breed shagya's.

If you're looking for dressage wins, like rosettes, then the cross wouldn't be the best of options. But, as far as wins go for BLUPing, it should be easy. However, the horse will see quite high difficulty competitions due to the naturally high dressage skill.

For wins in BLUPing, might I suggest western pleasure at very low difficulty, as Shagya's have very high dress and stamina, but low trot, which happens to be the most needed skill in WP.

Anyway, these are just suggestions!

@Antlera I was aiming for rosettes but I guess if I wanted to get wins for blupping I could employ the WP until 5yrs and change their discipline. It will cost me in tack though? Isn`t there any other options for English discipline Shagya's? I have seen people blup Shagya's on XC and then switch the discipline that will win them rosettes. It would save me time and money than way.

I think I might just experiment with crossbreeding and see which crosses excel in which competitions; current goals;
breed my arabian horse Rainy with a:
thoroughbred (thanks 4 winds!) <3
marwari
akhal teke

It won't cost tack, tack automatically swaps to western when you swap disciplines, or has for me. This might be different as I have a VIP perk where I can swap disciplines at any age - perhaps this makes the tack switch. I'm not sure, maybe ask someone or play around with it.

You can BLUP Shagyas in XC, but I would personally choose WP, as when I BLUPed Tekes (similar skillset to S Arabs) we got 20 easy wins in XC (:

As always, it is up to you!

@Antlera Thanks I'll try all your suggestions and see what happens! Wish me luck (:

Goodluck, and let me know how it goes. I can try and come up with a schedule, if all else fails!

dose anyone have a high gp speed cross mare i could barrow?
By Retired breeder, 11th April 2016 22:11:41
Hi! I'm thinking about trying cross breeding, I have bought crossbreed horses in the past. Can someone tell me what the general idea is, and what it's all about? Thanks!
By Retired breeder, 11th April 2016 22:26:10

err, the skillset on Shagyas is stamina/dressage/jump -- there really isn't another type of comp for people to switch to instead of XC for rosettes. They match up for cross-country races.

Anyone...? Can someone tell me the general idea of crossbreeding and what it's all about?

You breed two horses of different breeds either for fun or to get a certain skillset.
