Howrse turns 20!

HellOw everyone,

It's already been 20 years of Howrse!

20 years of breeding, competing, collecting, sharing, customizing, grinding...

A game is nothing without its players! Thank you for making Howrse what it has been for the last 20 years: a community game where you never play alone.

Let us know what your best memories of Howrse are.default smiley (ow)

Happy Twentieth Anniversary!

Oooo that actually makes a lot of sense and puts some things into context ^^^

Not justifying their lack of communication, but IF they don't have the funds compared to 5yrs ago, it would make sense that this bday celebration was a bit lackluster. I have friends in the CSE and compsci world who are struggling to get coding jobs due to AI and the job market in general being very competitive. This compared to 5yrs ago when graduates in those fields were making 6figs starting. Not familiar with the video game side of things, but it would make sense if Howrse (AKA Ubisoft) was seeing the effects of a tightening job market/potential layoffs.

Would a free divine/some free BMIs have broke the bank? Idk, just wish they would TELL US if they couldn't do a lot this year, instead of making empty promises.

Idk what the rules are on mentioning something like this, but for those of you who don’t know, Ubisoft just had multiple disastrous video game launches in the past few years. Losing millions of dollars kind of disastrous. They’ve cut lots of major departments. It’s big news in the video-game world.

I’m wondering if there has been significant cut to the budget of Howrse as well as significant pressure on Howrse from a struggling Ubisoft to either turn the game into a cash cow or to milk it for every penny while running it on a shoestring budget. It would explain a lot of things, like the constant offers, unbalanced events where some people like me get three divines for free while others get screwed over so FOMO pushes them to spend real-world currency for passes so they can get the end prize, parts of the game remain broken for years while new divines get churned out like once every two weeks, and more things I probably just can’t think of at this moment.

And if this is the case, maybe they literally don’t have the budget to code for anything special, even for a 20th Anniversary, just the ability to turn on the Star rain and other things. Maybe they did really try to push for us to get something else and failed. (If that’s the case, I wish they’d just SAY SO, but they’re probably muzzled on that point. It is interesting that they’ve left this topic open for us to just constantly whine and complain, tho.)

This feels like the end phase of a franchise, the “searching in the couch cushions for pocket change” stage where they nickel-and-dime you right to the very last day. Which is concerning, if true.

I get that but the problem is the more you push those offers the least some/many of us will want to pay for it/play the game... I know that for one, the more those "promos" are happening the least I want to pay for anything with real money and the more I'm tempted to just stop playing all together because it makes it impossible to keep up to date and collect everything without paying for it in euros/dollars/pounds or whichever currency.

I have never been a massive pass buyer but over the last 10 years (on this server and another 7-8 on a different one) I have splurged for Xmas Packs or other promotion or just to get passes here and there and did spend money on the game. If they keep on pushing away players like myself I'm not sure the balance sheet will go the way they want and that their strategy of milking every possible offer will work.
It's not the top 10 spenders that are going to be the ones keeping the game afloat, especially as they probably already have all the divines offered on promo except for the new ones.

It's a shame it's going that way and I know I'm not the only one thinking it when you're reading the comments and complains.

Oh I agree 100% Celeana, that the nickel-and-diming strategy tends to push paying players away or to disengage with events and other payment-heavy parts of the game. It’s a very counter-effective strategy. Unfortunately, if as I suspect Ubisoft is focused on the short-term and making quarterly statements look marginally better (or even just making payroll), they maybe happy to sacrifice future profits for short-term gains.

It’s a very common problem in the entertainment industry that has only gotten worse in the past quarter-century, sadly. A focus on the 100m dash over the marathon.

Oh, wow, my 'older' Viginiti (which I got on september 3rd) has lost all it's passes today, and the newer one (got it on september 12th) started to gain them, so now it has just 2 passes and not the almost 40 that were on the first one default smiley (y)
Am I the lucky one with that nice distribution or has someone else got the same problem?

the very helpful response to my "that did NOT answer my question" response to their lack of a response to my "are you doing more for the 20th anniversary" question

then don't promise more. that's my problem. they read all of the complaints about lack of anything. and came on and promised there was more. than NOTHING but crickets for over 2 weeks. AmOwzing has been active in the forums the last few days. all but THIS ONE. they are ignoring us hoping we will forget about it. I'm not going to let them. I'm not closing my contact us ticket til I get an actual response or they respond to the game. it's not fair to the people that play this game.

My main issue is the fact they hyped this up for months and then barely did anything for it. I've personally taken a step back from spending now because of the way this was handled and continues to be handled. It's a shame, as the communication actually saw some improvements, yet now it's gone back to the old pattern of keeping us in the dark.

I am not going to pretend to know how much it costs to run these things, but I don't think it's much to ask for them to be honest with us and just tell us if nothing else is planned.

exactly. and that's why i'm not going to stop pushing til we get answers. i'm not sending constant tickets. it's one ticket started on Mon. they responded with no real answer on tues. i responded back tues that "that does not answer my question". Got another non response this morning and responded back to it. with more details and how just be honest.

here's a copy/paste of my response this morning:

I'm guessing your NON response is a response. and you are doing NOTHING more for the anniversary. you know what would be nice. Be HONEST with your players. Either tell them we screwed up and have zip zilch nada NOTHING planned. sorry you don't like it. or actually do something. This isn't going to be forgotten. So respond about it. instead of ignoring it. that's not fair to your faithful players. All they want is you to show that you care and appreciate all they have given YOU for 20 years.

Remember you have players that have been with you since almost day 1. 20 YEARS. how many other games your company runs are even remotely that popular. have been around for even remotely that long. all you care about is getting your players to spend more and more and more and more money to make YOU more money.

I was a bit interested in the 20th anniversary at first because of the hype so very much a let down especially since I missed the 15 anniversary.
I've also taken a step from buying passes. I don't plan on doing the Christmas Packs this year. Been buying less passes due to all this.

I think the "extra" planned was likely the UFOs. I can't imagine it'd take almost a month to create an avatar banner, so I think that was probably just an idea that never came to fruition, or something. I don't think we're getting that at this point. The fact that they aren't giving any ETA really does seem like they wanted to do something but were told they can't and don't really want to break the bad news to us cause people are annoyed.

Ah well. It's Howrse, so bombing events and disappointing the playerbase isn't uncommon, I've *been* here this whole time and I know the first rule of the game is lower your expectations. default smiley (lol) I don't even think it's the devs fault at this point, I do think they're probably limited on how many non-sales stuff they're able to do.

Happy 20 years, anyways. default smiley (h) Genuinely, I do love the game and hope it sticks around a while longer.

the UFOs happened before they announced there was going to be more. the more announcements came the day after the anniversary

they didn't make the more announcement til they saw how unhappy people were. they need to do or say something that's all I'm looking for. and I'm not letting up on them til they do. I'm not constantly pestering. sent one ticket on Mon (2 weeks after anniversary so plenty of time to do something). got a response that wasn't a response tues morning. I sent a "that didn't answer my question" response tues morning. got another non response yesterday morning and I sent another response. Haven't heard anything today. if nothing tomorrow I will respond back. my last message and their last message are posted above.

I'm still honestly baffled they couldn't even throw together a half-baked avatar border at the *least*. or, you know, turn the star rain on for more than 2-ish drops, maybe the week or at least weekend of the anniversary (especially since the prize pool was full of such gems as 'one single mash' and the like).

Copying the 15th anniversary border and changing it to 20 must surely be a five minute job. If they can’t even be bothered to do that in response to all the feedback they’ve had about the disappointing ‘celebrations’, then there really is no hope for this game.

seriously, this offer packs everytime is starting to bother me. That's all they care about now, their precious "Offer M", "Offer L", "Offer S".... constantly bombing us with it. Enough.

my response this morning since I'm being ignored. sent nothing yesterday:

Now I feel like I am being ignored. I shouldn't be surprised since you are completely ignoring the entire game with this. We aren't going away. I will not drop this til you do something or are honest to the game and say "we have nothing more planned. sorry. we dropped the ball. time to move on." this isn't going away. it's been more than 2.5 weeks. you owe us something or an explanation. instead all we are getting is more pass offers that only give YOU more money. and an update that messed the app up even worse. Please respond.

I do get feeling angry about this situation, I'm angry too, but it's been long enough by now that they are very, very unlikely to address this in any way. I don't think messaging Support or posting on this thread will help anymore. They're just going to push offers for every letter of the alphabet and then be done with it. I don't think any amount of player protest interests them.

Just read some interesting comments. Sure hope Howrse doesn't start charging us to play. If so I think I will be dropping this game cause I'm a player who buys passes and if I have to start paying a monthly fee that takes the fun away from the game.
