Finally a post just for us cross breeders. The purpose of this topic is for cross breeders to have a place to discuss their crossbreeding programs and to share crossbreeding secrets and advice with others who may be interested in giving crossbreeding a try. Feel free to talk about your crossbreeding programs and your achievements and failures in crossbreeding.
Please remember to follow the rules of the forum and be informative and helpful. default smiley :-))

Reminder to all.

Please do not advertise sales or items wanted in this topic. I can turn a blind eye to the covers being offered (as long as they are not blatant advertisements) because we are, after all, trying to help each other progress and there is no filter on public covers for searching for crosses, but items sales and items wanted do not belong in any of the public forums and we have a sales forum for horse sales so please, lets keep our topic clean of the ads.

Thanks everyone

There are reasons for rules and everyone is expected to follow them. There will be no posting of advertisements in this topic and everyone is expected to be respectful. Any disrespect towards fellow players or moderators will not be tolerated. Anyone posting advertisements will receive a forum ban without prior warning. If breaking of rules continues to take place in this topic I will delete it.

Thank you

If anyone has personal issues with another player, or needs something back from another player(items/passes), other than covers/fills-please take it to private pms...anymore posting here will mean an instant forum ban without a warning.

A reminder that this is not the place for trading/buying/selling BMI, horses or advertising or asking for someone to train your horse.
If any of these things occur, you will be forum banned without prior warning.

Valora is my new CurlyxPaso that I've been waiting for. Gonna start her some time tonight and, depending on how she does, I'll decide of I'm gonna decide if I'm keeping her twin, Valencia.

Yay, keepy has a new cross baby. Nothing super amazing, but this mare is all I got to work with right now. (Once she's been bred to every breed, I'm done with her) Out of my current batch of 8...only like..2 are mares. Only 1 is done. Maybe I'll have luck with the next 8 lol

I think what works best is try to find a breed that has the top in your lowest 2 skills. None of them are direct opposites, so the third you can try to use the worst of your top three if that makes sense?
From then on keep breeding like this.
I personally have just started the cross breeding now, so I'll be reading here for tips.

Not bad. I would just try and breed to get those lower GP portions to even out with the higher ones using a breed with those characteristics.

I've actually found (in the past) that averaged-out skill sets are more difficult to BLUP. However, we'll see if the theme still runs true these days when I start working Gerneration Dead.

*Generation, even
I've found that even sets can be difficult as well.

Sometimes it just depends on the dominant breed though.
Jamie has done great at breed only comps, and aside from dressage his skills are pretty even.
Fergus has kind of wack skills, but he did well enough in classical to get his wins there.
The Widow Cameron isn't as easy to comp, but an issue with that is that her speed and dressage aren't as high as purebred TB's with that GP. Actually, I think I need to finish bolding trot on her as it looks like she'll get ranked for TB trot skills. go figure.

When breeding a comp winner I try to get the two supporting skills needed for the comp as high as I can for the breed.

And there are some breeds that do have opposite skill sets. Trakes top 3 skills are gallop, jump and stamina, while the Paso's is trot, speed and dressage.
Holsteiners have jump, gallop and dressage, while Curly has stamina, trot and speed.

Yep. That's how I ended up with Gen, was Trake stud to my Paso mare. Although, back in the day, I never had too many problems BLUPing my Trakes.

I didn't post for a while because I wasn't liking too many of my foals, but Pecan Pie is really cool and I wanted to share default smiley :)
Okay question if I have a 50% Selle/KWPN mare and I breed her to either a purebred KWPN or Selle, the foal comes out as 75% one breed 25% the other. So, if I breed the 75/25 foal to a horse of the 25% breed (purebred), will the foal of that breeding come out as 50/50?

For example, if the first foal comes out 75% Selle 25% KWPN, and I breed it to a purebred KWPN, will that foal come out as 50% Selle 50% KWPN?

Sorry if this is REALLY confusing

Like a horse with this percentage bred to a purebred Gypsy (in this case)?

The foal takes half from each parent, so you add up the total of each breed there is between the parents and divide by 2. So...
Criollo: 75
Gypsy: 25+100

Criollo= 75/2=37.5
Gypsy: (25+100)/2=62.5

The foal should look like this one

Alright another question: does anyone have a 50/50 Selle by KWPN stud that they'd be willing to let me have a cover from? At least 7000 GP is preferred! Sorry if this isn't allowed here

Would anyone have some classical Paso fillers they could help me out with? Valora doesn't seem to want to win any comps she's entered in. She's mostly entered into rookie trot and XC comps. Couple gallop and SJ comps now, trying to get some more wins.
By Retired breeder, 25th October 2016 21:00:17
I tried at gypsy vanner and KWPN cross, great results I don't know if Cantering Cosmo should be western or english?

I would try classical with that speed GP. Not sure what Gypsies are at right now in speed skills, but that is a terrible skill for them and with yours he should do well in classical if you train speed and dressage. Then enter trot, gallop or jump to get your wins

So, I went a little cross happy with my 7150 GP TB mare... Here are the foals, including the Vanner from a little while back and not including the IH that I'm just waiting on HB's cover for.
