Hi. We used to own Shetland ponies and we had a lovely black mare and her name was Betty. At 3 years old my brother used to clean her hooves, because if my mother was to try Betty would kick her. She used to love children as she was brought up in and traveled with a petting zoo before she came to us. She used gallop down to the fence line when she seem us walking towards her day paddock. She loved kids but hated adults. She used to bite mum on the breast always the same one and in exactly the same place. My brother and I used to flop around on her back and she used to wander around the paddock. When it came to riding my brother was to scared but would happily take care of grooming and all that stuff and I would mount up and go for a ride. She always had a bath after a ride and would lean in and step on your feet if you stopped rubbing her with brushes and sponges while she was having a bath

The very first horse I ever rode was Nina. A Irish Sporthorse mix with Arab. Everybody hates her for her speed and laziness. But we got along just fine. She died 2 days ago due to a decease in her ear.

Marmite chocolate brown horse but I don't know the breed
I assume were not counting pony rides at fairs?

The first horse I ever rode was named Stumpy, the teacher called her Stumpy the Wonder Horse though I sensed a lot of sarcasm. She was black but had a white sock on her back leg and a little bit of white under one eye that made her look like she was wearing eyeliner.

I couldn't make her trot to save me in the group trot and struggled to do anything else with her. The barn was terrible and unsafe, I know that now, but didn't then. I was in my 20s and have a chronic migraine so am in constant pain and not very fit. I was supposed to be in a beginners class but the people who were supposed to move on to intermediate stayed because it was too crowded in that class and the instructor taught to their level.

I liked Stumpy but felt bad for her because as a beginner's horse she was worked all day every day during summer camp despite the heat. So when I asked what horse I would ride one night the instructor gave me another horse and I thought that would be nice to give Stumpy a break. Bad idea, I bit the dust in canter and was so upset (the headache has taken it's toll on my psychologically) I couldn't continue on that night because I couldn't stop crying.

Next class I was determined to get back in the saddle, safe on Stumpy and was proud of myself just for not giving up. Wasn't willing to trot but thought no big deal, don't dressage riders really work on getting a nice walk anyway? Apparently not, the teacher came up to me after class and said that I was holding the class back and might be better suited in another class with a student instructor. That made me made, I paid for a beginners class and was being kicked out because I was holding up students who weren't supposed to be in the class anyway.

The point of all this to say is that it upset me so bad that if I might have quit riding all together if it wasn't for Stumpy. That night she did not fight me, was easy to control, and made me feel safe almost as if she could sense my fear. I really owe her a lot and am sorry I never got to pay it back.

Dusty he was a light gray Welsh Pony
First horse I rode was a chestnut Quarter Horse with a white spot on her back right leg and forehead named Misty. She just retired this year, she was my first horse I ever trained on from 2nd grade to 6th when I moved. The first horse I rode once I moved though was a black and white paint named Miss Kitty, sadly she's retired now as well and only does certain kid clinics and trail rides.
