The purpose of this topic is for cross breeders to have a place to discuss their crossbreeding programs and to share crossbreeding secrets and advice with others who may be interested in giving crossbreeding a try. Recently I've started to dabbled a bit into the wonderful world of cross-breeding. Mostly for fun. So far I've somehow managed to successfully breed a decent Mustang x Marwari, Nokota x Knab, and a Nokota x Highland Pony. Now what I'm really wanting to try doing a breeding a horse that's a cross of every horse (and pony) breed in the game.

What's everyone's favorite cross on TBs? I've crossed my mare with a good handful but curious to find out if one of them should be the next I put my AP into raising. Brought up my Polish Konik first and wasn't especially thrilled by him. Being ugly isn't helping his case though default smiley (lol)

Personally, my favorite is Appy/TB crosses. They do pretty well in rosette level gallop comps, provided you ask a team for a high GP covering. I will say, though, that I’ve let my line slide since I don’t have as much time for Howrse as I used to. I’ve also done Vanner/TB crosses and been quite pleased with how well they do in reining comps.

Has anyone done Criollo/TB crosses? I’m wondering if they do well in barrel comps but haven’t really had time to try them out.

Not worrying to to much yet about rosettes though my TB mare has managed 24 for me. Was hoping to snag the 50 rosettes and 50 with same horse trophies before she slipped down too low to compete but not sure that's going to happen. She's winning fewer and fewer every day default smiley (d)

Hello wonderful cross-breeders! I was wondering what determines the graphical appearance of a crossbred horse. Is it always tied to "dominant" bred (ie. what's listed as the breed in the breed section) or can graphical appearance and majority breed be separate things?

Completely random breeds in an example but
like if you have a 50/50 TWH x Irish Hunter sire & a 75/25 Canadian Horse x Hanoverian dam, what graphical appearance would the foal take? And is it random between pairings or can it vary with the same parents/breed percentages.

Sorry if this is confusing, I tend not to explain things well.

In most cases, the foal will take whichever breed has the highest percentage between the two parents. To find the breed percentages of the foal, just add the parents together and then divide by 2.
Also, the foal's stated breed in its characteristics is always the same as its graphic.

In cases when the parents share the same breeds evenly, the foal takes the dam's last listed breed. An example is Midnight Pearl. She is a Newfoundland dominant Tenn. WalkerxNewfoundland cross. Both of her parents are the same cross. She took Newfoundland as her breed, because it's her dam's last listed breed.

In crosses where the parents are all different breeds, then the foal takes the sire's second listed breed in his genetics. Claire's parents are LusitanoxAppaloosa (Shadow the sire) and PasoxVanner(Tan, the dam). Claire took Appaloosa as her breed, because Appaloosa is her sire's second listed breed.
If you're wanting to use Tears, I recommend breeding a test foal first, just in case there's a bug going on that produces an incorrect breed for the foal, which I've had happen before, but it's not common.

For your example, the foal would be Canadian, because it'll be the breed with the highest percentage between the two parents. Its genetics would look like this:
Canadian: 37.5%
Walker: 25%
Irish Hunter: 25%
Hanoverian: 12.5%

Most of my Sierra horses (Paint) have 1% Spanish Horse. I have a Selle Francious that I would love to cross on them, but want the color. Is there any way that I can get a colored foal from Impulsive Actions on my Sierra horses? I even tried crossing on my Foundation mare, Sierra Sioux, and wound up with a solid.

You'd have to breed your Paint cross to another cross in order for the foal to be Paint. The breed of a purebred will dominate the 99% of the Paint genetics

Or, if you were fine with a 50×50 Paint/Selle cross, you'd have to use Paint as the sire, and Selle for the dam so that the foal will be Paint

I'm a little confused by what you mean by a "colored" foal. If you mean that you want a Paint-dominant cross (the art for the horse would be a Paint horse), the only way that you can do that would be to use a Zeus' Bolt and change Impulsive Action to a mare. Foals from a simple two-way cross will always take the sire's breed (using a 100% sire/dam that are purebreds of different breeds). I notice you said that your Sierra horses have 1% PSH, this shouldn't affect the results. In this case, the reason why you got a solid foal is because Impulsive Action is the sire and 100% Selle instead of Paint. If you changed Impulsive Action to a mare and then bred her with one of your Paint stallions, you'd end up with a Paint-dominant foal.

If you want to keep Impulsive Action as the sire, you could try a four-way cross, but it'll be a bit more complicated. The foal of a four-way cross where both parents are 50/50 crosses of the SAME BREEDS (it's different with different breeds) will take the dam's last listed breed. It's random which order the breeds in a cross are listed, but I've noticed that it seems harder now to get a foal with the non-dominant breed listed first. For my ongoing QP project, I had to breed 7 foals to finally get the cross that I needed. But results may vary. I wish you the best!

i'm planning once i fully blup both my foundies to create two cross breeds

i'm gonna cover my female arab to a throughbred to see if i can get a nice classical style horse for competing in classical comps

then also gonna cover my female arab to a mustang to see if i can get a nice western style cross for competing in western comps
if
then offer coverings with my high GP male to make equus lol to fund my EC endeavors

I have a nice TB/Crillo cross that does GREAT in gallop comps, and pretty well in Show Jumping, too. So if you are looking for a good Gallop comp horse, you should try that. She's 50% TB + 50% Crillo. She also produces really nice foals; I covered her with another TB and got foals (with the help if Tears) with 6202.50 IBS! And 1947 excellence stars.

I just bred Akari, one of my Thoroughbred mares, to an Appaloosa/Thoroughbred cross. I'm excited to see the foal! Hopefully they do pretty well in Gallop competitions, especially given the skill set of the sire and dam. default smiley ^)

(Also, Akari is the first mare that I BLUPPed since I came back from my 5-6 year hiatus from the game.default smiley (l))

Hello all!
I'm somewhat new to this game. I actually had the impression that cross breeding wouldn't be beneficial at all ! I'm quite shocked to read that it can be really beneficial!
I have 2 amazing Morgans who produce amazing foals, so I tend to keep thoes.
I started out with two lips, who's stats are horrific default smiley :$
What would be a good breed to cross with them ?

I don't have any personal experience with Morgans, but apparently their best skills are stamina, dressage, and jumping. Arabians have the same top skills, so you can probably try breeding a Morgan to an Arabian to try and maximize these skills. Hope this helps! default smiley :)default smiley (l)

I bred this one some years ago.

It's not my favorite skill set for wins, because its genetics aren't weighted towards 3, or sometimes even 2 skills, unlike most horses you're competing against. Because only 3 skills count for a comp you want your genetics weighted towards at least 2 of them, rather than spread amongst them all

Oh cool! Thank you! I'll definitely be using him as a reference. I'm mostly looking to do a small army of fillers that work for any of my unis. It's difficult digging around for one that works everytime I get confronted with a new skill set.

After a decade-long hiatus, I decided to come back to Howrse two weeks ago! Back then, I focused on IH crosses and was on a mustang team, but now I’m just focusing on comp crosses and some unicorns. The crosses are mainly IH based, but I really love the Argentinian criollos!

Here’s some links to my best projects so far:
Irish Exit (500+ wins)

Miotal (#1 IH in skills)

AC Ranger (new AC comp cross)

I also have a Lipi/IH/GV/SF cross in the works that I’m pretty excited about! Should be IH dominant, and a decent dressage based horse. Normally I breed for speed, so this is new lol.

Anyway, I’m exited to watch everyone’s projects! This game is like a warm hug of nostalgia default smiley ^)
