Finally a post just for us cross breeders. The purpose of this topic is for cross breeders to have a place to discuss their crossbreeding programs and to share crossbreeding secrets and advice with others who may be interested in giving crossbreeding a try. Feel free to talk about your crossbreeding programs and your achievements and failures in crossbreeding.
Please remember to follow the rules of the forum and be informative and helpful. default smiley :-))

Reminder to all.

Please do not advertise sales or items wanted in this topic. I can turn a blind eye to the covers being offered (as long as they are not blatant advertisements) because we are, after all, trying to help each other progress and there is no filter on public covers for searching for crosses, but items sales and items wanted do not belong in any of the public forums and we have a sales forum for horse sales so please, lets keep our topic clean of the ads.

Thanks everyone

There are reasons for rules and everyone is expected to follow them. There will be no posting of advertisements in this topic and everyone is expected to be respectful. Any disrespect towards fellow players or moderators will not be tolerated. Anyone posting advertisements will receive a forum ban without prior warning. If breaking of rules continues to take place in this topic I will delete it.

Thank you

If anyone has personal issues with another player, or needs something back from another player(items/passes), other than covers/fills-please take it to private pms...anymore posting here will mean an instant forum ban without a warning.

Edit by pixiesbite

A reminder that this is not the place for trading/buying/selling BMI, horses or advertising or asking for someone to train your horse.
If any of these things occur, you will be forum banned without prior warning.

Hey everyone! I'm returning from a break and was wanting to catch up on some stuff. I was wondering what breeds everyone was crossing? I'm wanting a speed cross I think, there's so many options now is hard to choose. default smiley (lol)

Thanks in advance!

I usually stop rides/training at 510 range, then work on comps. I was working from my phone for some of her training, and messed up somehow. I was trying to fill the Dressage, speed and Gallop for the next set of comps, cause they were finished gaining from Gallop Racing. Ideally, with Speed and Dressage as close to 910 as possible(and no gain left to put it over) I can then enter her in low level trot racing, but also have the max secondary skills, giving her an edge and winning trophies while earning trot skills. In most cases, my horses have their 20 wins, before I have gained all comp skills.

This time, my phone spazed out on me, and I ended up one point over on the Dressage. :/

Ok, let me see if I got this straight... default smiley xd

(I will BOLD the dominate breed for the Example)

In the case of breeding two equal 50/50 crosses, it counts as a 4 way, and the foal will take the second listed breed, right?

-So if the parents were ARAB/tb, the foal would come out as TB dominate

-and if the parents were arab/TB, it would still be TB dominate

-but if the Parents are tb/ARAB, they would be Arab dominate

-Also if the Parents are TB/arab, it would be Arab dominate

Tell me I finally got this! I am not crazy, right? default smiley xd

SO excited to start a new project: the Colorado Ranger horse!
For my CR horses, they are all 25 Barb/25 Arab/50 Appy (for coloring)

This is the first filly, I can't wait to age her up, BLUP, and then breed to an Appy!!

If it is 2 50/50's of the same 2 breeds together, it changes to the mare's second listed breed. But, either way, yes, it is always the second listed breed. Sire's second if 2 50/50's of different breeds, mare's second if 2 of the same 50/50 cross.

Ahhhhh! Okay, some how, I never caught that. This makes my head hurt. default smiley xd

Wait a minute. If the foal takes the mares second listed breed in an even 50/50 then my Morabs and Appy/Selle would have come out Arabian and Selle, right? But they didn't. Iris's foal came out Morgan dominant and Wolves' foal was Appy dominant. In both cases, the first gen was sib bred to produce the second gen.So how does that work then? The only cross I've had to follow that rule would be my NokotaxCriollos.

It's whatever the second breed listed in mare's genetics tab is. I would have to see the lines you are talking about in order to see if yours are doing something weird or not. (Rain is, admittedly, being too lazy to go searching.) My Crio/KWPNs, Mustang/KWPNs, and Walker/KWPNs have all followed the rule, so it's pretty solid.

I couldn't find the Morab in particular you mentioned, but Wolves foal turned out correctly.
Ghost is Appy dominant as the mare (Wolves) has Selle listed first, Appy second. Which you bred to its sibling which is the same cross. default smiley :)

Thanks, amylinn(: default smiley :) I'm completely new to this, but what intrigues me is being able to but different breeds together to achieve a horse with exceptional skills for certain competitions.

EQUESTRIENNE1979
Thank you for all the info! As I mentioned, I think my goal would be what you mentioned about crossbreeding to achieve skills for competitions or maybe the breed skills boards. I just have a lot of really basic questions, though.

Can you cross breed for skills and then continue to 'blend in' more of one breed until it's 100% pure again? Hope that makes sense.

'Dominant' does that just mean that it has a bit more of one breed than the other(s)?

Do you buy from the sales or from teams or rely on covers?

Hi guys, you might remember a while back I linked my first real crossbred filly, http://www.howrse.com/elevage/chevaux/cheval?id=50010306

Since then I've decided cross breeding is way more fun than breeding purebloods. [I have unicorns for that :'D ]

Anyway, I was wondering if you have any tips to breeding great crosses? What are your favorite breeds to cross with? Are there any that just don't mesh well?

Feel free to message me if you really want to talk about it! I'm all ears c:
SweaSol - For your first question: No. There will always be one percent of a breed. We used to be able to do that (the breed would just disappear) but they changed it to if the horse is a cross, and you keep breeding it back to pures, they will have one percent of whatever breed you are not breeding it to. <-- If all of that makes sense. Second question: Sometimes yes. But if you have two 50/50 crosses that you breed together, it is the breed that the foal is. As equest stated, the foal will always be the second breed listed on the mother's genetics if she's a 50/50 cross bred to another 50/50 cross; if not, it will be the father's breed or whichever breed will have the most percentage. Third question: I rely on available covers (they have been pretty reliable) but you can contact the cross teams to see if they over covers or you can buy. It's personal preference.

No, you can't breed back to pure and your skills will change if you do that too. Foals get 50% from each parent.

Dominant means it's that breed on the horse's info tab. So if you breed a TB mare to a Gypsy stallion, both purebred, the foal will come out Gypsy dominant but still 50x50 on the genetics tab.

Usually I buy the mare from sales, a baby female and blup myself to save money, then use public covers or ask a team for a cover for the stallion. You usually get better GP that way and save money/resources over buying a colt from sales and blupping yourself.

I have a few of my favorites on the previous page. Usually, my goal with crossbreeding is either to take a skills rank for the breed or have a breed-only comp monster, or both. I like 4-way crosses best, but you can have some fun with 50x50 crosses too.

My 4-way stamina Selle cross will be holding the #1 Stam Selle spot for a while. I used 3 high Stam breeds plus high Selle to make a powerhouse stam horse. With only a few days of rosette hunting he got 15 XC rosettes and 6 cutting rosettes.
Morganite
I worked with the #2 Arab team and the #1 Teke team to get top covers from them and bought a Gypsy and Selle from sales.

My 4-way Dressage TB will hold the #1 spot and he's also #1 for Trot and in the top 10 with him for Jump as well, and I didn't fully skill and cloud him. I got a top Noko cover for that, but worked with sales level horses for the rest of the cross.

Has anyone joined a team with the intent on using their horses in crosses? I have to say I am guilty of that, lol. Then I got hooked on teams default smiley (b). I wishI had more time. I miss being on the more competitive prix teams.

No but honestly I wouldn't put it past myself haha! I've never been on a competitive prix team though, what is it like?

Busy... Blup requirements are high, chatzy is fun though, lots of filling comps for people. The comrade is nice. There's not always much profit in it, with all of the work and resources you put in. You do it for the love of the breed and the team.
