Finally a post just for us cross breeders. The purpose of this topic is for cross breeders to have a place to discuss their crossbreeding programs and to share crossbreeding secrets and advice with others who may be interested in giving crossbreeding a try. Feel free to talk about your crossbreeding programs and your achievements and failures in crossbreeding.
Please remember to follow the rules of the forum and be informative and helpful. default smiley :-))

Reminder to all.

Please do not advertise sales or items wanted in this topic. I can turn a blind eye to the covers being offered (as long as they are not blatant advertisements) because we are, after all, trying to help each other progress and there is no filter on public covers for searching for crosses, but items sales and items wanted do not belong in any of the public forums and we have a sales forum for horse sales so please, lets keep our topic clean of the ads.

Thanks everyone

There are reasons for rules and everyone is expected to follow them. There will be no posting of advertisements in this topic and everyone is expected to be respectful. Any disrespect towards fellow players or moderators will not be tolerated. Anyone posting advertisements will receive a forum ban without prior warning. If breaking of rules continues to take place in this topic I will delete it.

Thank you

If anyone has personal issues with another player, or needs something back from another player(items/passes), other than covers/fills-please take it to private pms...anymore posting here will mean an instant forum ban without a warning.

Edit by pixiesbite

A reminder that this is not the place for trading/buying/selling BMI, horses or advertising or asking for someone to train your horse.
If any of these things occur, you will be forum banned without prior warning.

GP is not a problem as I think I accidentally found myself a 100 GP covering. default smiley (o)

The post though is a bit premature as I've just had a major reshuffle and I didn't need to panic about being behind as much as I thought so I won't be needing anything just yet. I'll definitely keep you in mind though, thanks for your help.
What do yall think of this girl?

It can be done if you are prepared to do several generations of back-breeding. Start with 50/50 cross and purebred, breed their foal back to the 50/50 cross, and keep going from there, always breeding back to the parent that has more of the breed(s) the foal has less of.

If there is an easier way, I have not figured it out yet.

She's nice! default smiley (7)
You could easily make a pretty good western all-arounder out of her.

Thanks! default smiley ^) I'm trying to decide whether to sell her and get a cover from a top team for another one or just keep her for breeding while getting a top cover for a half sibling that has better gp and more skills. I think I'll keep her though, I like her default smiley :-))

Can someone define an appendix please. I know it's a QH/TB cross but I can't remember the details

From wikipedia: "An "Appendix" American Quarter Horse is a first generation cross between a registered Thoroughbred and an American Quarter Horse or a cross between a 'numbered' American Quarter Horse and an 'appendix' American Quarter Horse. The resulting offspring is registered in the "appendix" of the American Quarter Horse Association's studbook, hence the nickname."

Thank you, so that means on here to make sure the stud is a QH for a 50/50 cross so that it's a "quarter horse"?

Yup. In a 50/50 cross, the offspring always takes the breed of the father.

Thank you Hiems!
I'm debating whether I want to start a foundation line of sorts with him and the sibling I bred with Tears and maybe breed a line as a side-side project(as I have so many alreadydefault smiley (lol))
I thought it would also be kind of cool to try breeding 6 other horses with all 6 stats over 1000GP as well but have each foal's best skill be something else. He's Got It All has dressage over 1300 so I could try breeding one with speed over 1200, and another with gallop over 1200 etc. Then I could breed them all together and create one foal out of all that. What am I getting myself into?

Yes, if you want the foal to be a Quarter horse dominant, then you'll want the sire to be a Quarter Horse and your mare to be a Thoroughbred. 50/50 crosses always take the sire's breed.

When breeding do you all look at the skills or GP?

Also what breeds would you cross to make the 'ideal horse' starting with a TB mare?
( I was thinking she'd have to be covered by a breed basically opposite of her so not specialising in Gallop, Dressage and Speed but that's only my logic and not trial/error ) default smiley (o)
By Retired breeder, 17th August 2016 22:19:21
Looking at what Hiems has in their forum I think maybe a Thoroughbred x KWPN might be a good place to start? If anyone is curious I'm planning on breeding this mare once she reaches above 4200 in skills and is 100 BLUP- F- 449* / 5058 GP

The GP; the skills are simply a reflection of the GP. Skills are not passed down, only the GP is, and the skills are dependent on the GP. I hope that made sense. default smiley :-x

That completely depends on what you're looking for. I've personally had luck with TB x Australian Pony and TB x Paint; many crossbreeders try to combine breeds with similar skill sets to further enhance those skills.

Does any by chance have a purebred 6,000+ GP Female Mustang for sale? Preferably a filly so I can train her.

I'm planning on doing a Marwari & Mustang cross and they share the same top three skills.
By Retired breeder, 18th August 2016 02:22:40
Skills are what have already been trained, where GP defines what the maximum amount of skills a horse can achieve, without factoring IBS which is defined by the parents' BLUP.

Of course, BLUP is factored by Skills, Rides, Lessons, Age and Competition wins. So really, it comes down to GP and BLUP usually.

Where I'm too lazy and impatient and am willing to accept -100 BLUP and +100GP.

Sorry to double post, but I'd like to make the most of my Howrse time as possible.

Has anyone tried a Standardbred x Holsteiner?
Especially you, bibbs, perhaps?

There are six skillsets in total:

Jumping, Stamina, Speed, Dressage, Gallop, Dressage.

... and as indicated by the Directories:

Holsteiner:
Jumping: 518.44
Gallop: 454.18
Dressage: 423.83

Standardbred:
Trot: 518.24
Stamina: 432.62
Speed: 372.97

I'm sure you could get a fairly even GP across the skillsets with that combo? That's just a five-minute run through in my "Top 3..." list in my forum. I would test the theory but I am very AP poor at the moment.
By Retired breeder, 18th August 2016 04:07:58
@ Hiems, yes Holsteiner x Standardbred ends up roughly even.

I run the numbers for top GP SB and top GP Holsteiner from the rankings, and the averages all range from 945 to 1189. If the two horses were closer in GP, the variance would be even less.

Fantastic. Maybe that's something I'll trial after I finish my latest project.
My beautiful project !!! A huge shoutout to Starry-Eyed for helping me!!

Cross Bred - Arabian and Gypsy Vanner

New Born Twins: Rueful Celebration & Hualiso Halo

Breed: Arabian Horse Age: a few hours
Species: Riding Horse Height: 8.0 hands
Gender: female and male Weight: 178.2 pounds
Coat: Mouse Gray Date of Birth: 2016-08-18

Family Tree: Catastrophic {Dam} and Kaya {Sire}

Focus aimed on the Greater Strength and Skills was chosen for the Female.

This Experiment is with Interest of an Inverted Result to Last Offspring of Foals produced.

100% Health, Training, 100% Health, Food then Groom, Stroke, Primary Races the Horse has Won, All Benifits including Gold VIP.

Both horses are in Top condition and above 6000 in Genetics with Catastrophic (Dam) at 6314 G/8296 and Kaya (Stir) at 6122/8060.

Catastrophic - Gypsy Vanner (Purebred)
Kaya - Arabian (Purebred)

Birth Rate was Advanced with Age. Unsure if wise to Ultra Sound may lessen chance of outcome.

I made use of the Ultra Sound. This resulting in 2 fillies of Arabian Horse breed and of Mouse Gray coat color.

Scientific Evidence would Suggest that the Birth Calculus, Sets its Primary on the Lesser Skill in Strength for given Genetic Skillsets and the Coat is Reflective to Other.

This gives Overall Balance to the Shared Vision of Breeding Genetics.

Genetic potential Total: 6226.62
Stamina 1542.21 Gallop 1041.99
Speed 642.18 Trot 548.63
Dressage 1309.31 Jumping 1142.30

Arabian Horse
50.0 %
Gypsy Vanner
