Finally a post just for us cross breeders. The purpose of this topic is for cross breeders to have a place to discuss their crossbreeding programs and to share crossbreeding secrets and advice with others who may be interested in giving crossbreeding a try. Feel free to talk about your crossbreeding programs and your achievements and failures in crossbreeding.
Please remember to follow the rules of the forum and be informative and helpful. default smiley :-))

Reminder to all.

Please do not advertise sales or items wanted in this topic. I can turn a blind eye to the covers being offered (as long as they are not blatant advertisements) because we are, after all, trying to help each other progress and there is no filter on public covers for searching for crosses, but items sales and items wanted do not belong in any of the public forums and we have a sales forum for horse sales so please, lets keep our topic clean of the ads.

Thanks everyone

There are reasons for rules and everyone is expected to follow them. There will be no posting of advertisements in this topic and everyone is expected to be respectful. Any disrespect towards fellow players or moderators will not be tolerated. Anyone posting advertisements will receive a forum ban without prior warning. If breaking of rules continues to take place in this topic I will delete it.

Thank you

If anyone has personal issues with another player, or needs something back from another player(items/passes), other than covers/fills-please take it to private pms...anymore posting here will mean an instant forum ban without a warning.

Edit by pixiesbite

A reminder that this is not the place for trading/buying/selling BMI, horses or advertising or asking for someone to train your horse.
If any of these things occur, you will be forum banned without prior warning.

Fifth; You can do it! My crossbreeding group, Legend of the Knight, beat and ran with the top Standardbred group for a while and none of us could buy passes. Of course they pulled ahead and we just focused on the sub-boards, but it's still a great accomplishment. default smiley (y)

Ha ha yeah that's what I did with the Mar GP race. Was frustrated at the poor GP of the Mar studs available to the public because they kept dragging down the GP when I crossbred with significantly better TBs, Paints, and Lusis so I started breeding my own and putting up my own covers as a challenge. It worked, default smiley :db Except I'm not gonna try to breed my dream Mar cross until my purebred line hits 1200 GP, which is gonna take a good long while....

I finally got on to crosses seriously. I've got a couple going, anyone got good tips for a newbie to crosses?
By Retired breeder, 27th December 2011 05:42:31
Thanks, Twilight, default smiley :) I'm actually not too concerned with trying to beat the Serena Luna group; they're doing Mar/Lusi/Fry/Arab to guarantee the highest GP/skills possible for Marwaris but I find the resulting skill set to be boring. Trying to overtake them on the boards is one thing, but being able to whomp their crossbreds in comps fair and square is another. Just look at what Lovemotion is able to do (god I sound like one of those parents always preening over and bragging about their kids).
By Retired breeder, 27th December 2011 05:45:21
I am sure you will be able to do it. It just might take a little while.
By Retired breeder, 27th December 2011 05:45:30
@Cokelover check out Xellosnut's forum; she has a primer on crossbreeding. The basic goal of crossbreeding is to combine the skill sets of two breeds to create a hybrid with the best of both. Whenever you crossbreed ask yourself what kind of horse you're trying to breed and for what purpose.
If you ever need anything to help, let me know. It always bugged me that the top breeders won't give covers to the crossbreeders (I am referring to covers that do not threaten their elite). The public Standie covers aren't the prettiest.

OMG! Well that is one nice mare! I agree that as long as you get the skill sets you want first and then go for the GP you will be able to easily get them out of those rankings.

Lovemotion is excellent, Fifth! What a great mare <3

Thanks for all the kind words. I was hoping to get a good dressage Mar from the Mar/Lusi 50/50 cross but she turned out to be way better in barrel comps. With the Mars I'm breeding now I'll hopefully be able to work out a Mar/TB/Lusi/Fry cross to get a dressage/barrel monster, default smiley xd

Very nice cross you got there, evenagnelsfall. I can see why she's done well in xc comps.
I started out breeding Hano/Standies, then joined LK. I originally bred pure Hanos. I bred the random cross back in Jan of 2010 and did my first BLUP (about time) so mind you the lessons were horrid and I didn't know what I was doing. Then I noticed the horse, reguardless of her miserable BLUP, made first for Jump. LK for some reason accepted me (Lol it was just so bad) and I took off in Hano/Standies. I nearly filled up all top ten places...and then Only Fools and Globe Trotters took notice of me default smiley xd The cross took a lot of popularity and I was pushed down.
Considering that first cross was a 10* (even for early 2010) you can see how little Jump was paid mind. Now it is quite high and my names are low. I have been thinking about breeding a new one.

Well I just bred a great TB/Fry/Lusti cross here he is: Jolly Old Elf Maybe once you get that great Marwari you could breed it to him. I am very proud of him.
By Retired breeder, 27th December 2011 06:08:54
Sounds exciting, Fifth. I'm sure it'll be accomplished. <33

And thanks! Crossbreeding is addicting, and I've onlv started. Hoping to join a larger breeding group, soon. default smiley (l)

HI all,

I need a stallion that is a hanoverian cross. It can be genetically anything other than paint--my mare is half hano/half paint. Anyway, I want a speed GP greater than 275 if anyone has got something like that. I'm willing to pay top price for a covering. Message me if you know of a horse!

Thanks in advance,
CC

Perfect I just got a Z-blot. Should I bolt Jingle Bells and then breed to my holly mare once they are both done?
By Retired breeder, 27th December 2011 06:22:50
Oh my that is one *nice* colt, sroseys1. Very nice indeed.

I already worked out the breed percentages I need if I want the trot to not drop. I suppose I could bring in some Standie blood at some point but that'll just make things more complicated than they already are, lol.

@CCSporthorses I have a Standie/Hano but his speed GP's 243.52; he's a bit on the outdated side, sorry.
By Retired breeder, 27th December 2011 06:24:27
Thanks Fifth! Well it is time for me to get to bed. I've got to go.
By Retired breeder, 27th December 2011 06:54:07
@Fifth== message me. I also breed some Hano crosses with all sorts of other GP's especially building up trot for high dressage wins. Standie cross might be interesting. :-)
I'm curious! Who crosses Brumbies and what do you go for?

Really really want to BLUP a crossie .... but can't get passes until next Friday. *sigh*
By Retired breeder, 27th December 2011 14:20:58
I've found that Gypsy Vanners and Arabians make good crosses, since they both have high skills and GP, but excel in different areas.
By Retired breeder, 27th December 2011 14:46:42
Gypsy's and TB's are great crosses as well, I have about 10 of those default smiley (y)
