If you want to do dressage, stick with another lusitano and go purebred as there's no other breed that's even close, but if you are thinking anything that requires speed, lusitano isn't a great cross, I wanted to increase the dressage component of my galloping crossbreds but their speed was so ridiculously low it completely nullified any gains made in dressage!
By Retired breeder, 20th June 2019 23:08:45

When it comes to Lusi's, (I used to be a passionate breeder but have since switched to selles because of the following reasons) they are really tricky to crossbreed because their skillset is really made for one thing, and one thing only-dressage. So when you breed them with other horses, it often makes a weaker final product. So weak I'm trying to sell all of my Lusi crosses because I couldn't get any wins with them easily. Now, that's not to say there aren't decent ones out there, just be choosy. I haven't had success but other crossbreeders seem to have had better luck than me because they went for other comps other than dressage. Don't do what I did and cross for dressage, if you want to go for dressage, find a high gp Lusitano stud and go pure. Just my advice, Good Luck! default smiley :)default smiley :-))
Hey y'all! I have been gone for quite a while but used to do some crossbreeding.

I figured I could jump into a small project default smiley :) but I need some help.

I got this filly: here she is, what would be a good XC cross? GV? I do sort of want it to be Arab dominant (for which I realize that I need a mixed stallion which isn't very smart of me...).

Thanks for all your thoughts, you guys are awesome (just reading all the help everyone gives each other is so amazing)!

She has all the skills, I even compared her to a gypsy prospect I bought for the Grand Prix and her skills are comparable, maybe slightly lower in jumping (less than a hundred points) but otherwise very comparable. You could cross her with a gypsy and then cross the result back to an arab, though I don't see a reason you couldn't go purebred in this case if you wanted to. As far as I know there isn't such a thing as 'hybrid vigor' on howrse.
Thank you so much! default smiley ^) You are incredibly helpful. I'll get going. Have a wonderful day!

Quick question - I want to breed a nokota dominant cross for gallop competitions. I know I want to use a trot racing breed to keep gallop low, but what breeds do y'all recommend? I need to boost speed, as well.
Hello

Is there a team for cross breeding as I would love to be a part of that ❤️

I think teams have to be purebred, but it is a cool idea I'd love to see, but may be difficult to realize in practice.

Just curious as to why you want to keep gallop low for gallop comps? I know you'll qualify for less difficult competitions but would that help your chances of winning? The main trotting breeds are French trotter and Peruvian Paso. The galloping breeds are TB, PSH, QH, Paint, and Appaloosa.
there’s a team for cross breeding, the team is russian don, but the only thing it’s used for is to show off individuals affixes, and to keep the people on it together default smiley :) i don’t remember what it’s called, just that it’s russian don default smiley :)

Hmm, I actually would suggest maybe a selle? They have low gallop and trot but they have the speed. However if you want to keep gallop up but not trot I would suggest a thoroughbred. default smiley :)

Hey! So I'm wanting to do a decent Xcountry cross, but right now buying a decent Gypsy Vanner is somewhere between OUCH and BOING for me, so would crossing a high gp selle with a high gp Vanner make a decent Cross country? If not any other suggestions? Thanks in advance.

That would be an interesting cross, you'd lose about 500 points in stamina but gain about 400 in jumping. You might not qualify for the highest level comps unless you used tears but I would think it could be a competitive horse in the right comps. I've been playing with gallopers, trying to increase speed and dressage but at the cost of some gallop. The thoroughbreds beat them almost every time for rosettes but they do really well at winning lower level comps. If you give it a try, let us know how it goes!

I went back to the manual to see what it had to say, and quote:

"The team affix

You can use an affix that is shared across all your team mates for all horses belonging to the breed that you all collaborate on together. Only purebred horses can receive the team affix."

So in theory I guess a team could crossbreed but only purebreds could have the affix, so if it's more of a social organization than a competitive team that would work just finedefault smiley (b)

Thanks everyone!

@ skylark - it just helps with wins, and like you said, the horse would qualify for lower-level comps, but the high support skills would boost chances of winning.

Here's the baby! Noko×Selle

I'm really happy with how he turned out! I'm planning to use gallop wins when I blup him, which shouldn't be too hard.
Also, a crossbreeding team would be super fun!

He could also have a decent cross country careerdefault smiley :)

Or at least a group that experiments to make a google doc of good crosses! Like an experimenting for fun that's very casual type thing. I'd like that.default smiley :)

Does anyone know if a cross-breed has ever placed in the top 4 of the grand prix? I'm thinking I might experiment, but I don't want to devote any real resources into it if it just can't work.
By Retired breeder, 25th June 2019 03:29:52

I don't have any data for that, maybe someone else does, but I would think if the genetics/skills/bonuses were equal to the purebreds (a cross of two high gp breeds in the same discipline, if such exist?) it would certainly be possible, especially if you can boost the secondary skills while keeping the primary relatively high.
I'm not saying it hasn't happened because I don't know and I agree it is very probably possible but I will say I've been crossing Gypsys and Selles and I can't even qualify for rosettes, the skill levels just aren't there. Let me know if you decide to go for it, maybe I can help.

I thought so - awhile back, @Legacy Ann was working on that, I remember. I think she did it with a gypsy/selle or a selle/kwpn? Keep in mind this was about a year or so ago and I'm not exactly sure. But yeah, she would be one to ask.
By Retired breeder, 25th June 2019 12:54:04

I'd definitely be interested.
I've never managed top 4 in the Prix, I'm afraid. I've won a lot of rosettes with crosses, but that's it.

Quite some time back, two teams of different breeds did collaborate to make a Prix winner. I can't remember which breeds or for which comp though.

As someone else mentioned, if you have high enough genetics to work with, it's very possible to do so. KWPN/Selles for show jumping, Marwari/Mustangs for barrels or Nokota/Knabs for trail would probably be the ones to target. You just have to run some calculations to see what you'll need to win, and then it will depend on what GP is actually available for you to use.

I'm trying to find a good selle cross, do you know if there is a place to get decent KWPN's? I know I think it was team Inferno that used to do them then gave them up in favor of selles, so I was curious if the breed had decent genetics or anything yet.
