I have bred a lot of Appaloosa x Thoroughbred recently but taking a bit of a break and I’ve done some lovely Highland Pony crosses;

Glenbarr - 31029.74 GP - Arabian x Highland

Skye - 31170.51 GP - Criollo x Highland

I may skill up Skye first!

recently had a good time crossbreeding thoroughbred, arabian horse, selle francais and even (as the cherry on top) mustang for high gp skillers.
It was quiet fun.default smiley (l)

Love my first cross breed, she’s a little dapple gray tobaiano. The sire is my Dun Overo. Cades iron. The dam my black quarter horse. Kittys claws. I’m honestly super excited to see where she starts winning after her training. default smiley :d

Does anyone know how a crossbred foal's breed is determined if parents are 5-way crosses of different breeds? Thanks in advance!

4 ways of even percentages (like all 25%s) take the sire's 2nd listed so long as both parents have all different breeds between them. A 5 way might do the same if the percentages are the same, but with that many, it's possible a hidden decimal could push one breed's percentage higher than the others.

I bred a test foal that took the dam's 1st listed breed

5 way Marwari foal
Sire is 20% each of
Akhal-Teke
Shetland
Irish Hunter
Trakehner
Hanoverian

Dam is 20% each
Marwari
Peruvian Paso
Chincoteague Pony
Arabian Horse
Mustang

I got on preprod so I could bolt the parents, and with them flipflopped, the foal again took the new dam's (the sire for the first test) first listed breed, which is Akhal Teke.

The parents are actually 3rd or 4th gen 5 ways, so I went back a bit to see how the first generation's (their parents were 4 ways) foal turned out.
Sire
Dam
2019 Foal is a Mustang, which is the dam's first listed breed.
I bred a new foal from this pair today and that one is also a Mustang.

So I'd say that if the percentages are even (all 20%s) , it takes the dam's first listed breed

Thank you for testing it! I'm working on an All Breeds project right now and though I'm a ways out from the last horse, I want to plan ahead to get a riding horse

The fun thing about crossbreeding is how open-ended it is! There are a lot of projects and goals you can explore.

I personally mostly cross-breed for horses who can target rosettes. My most recent cross was Midnight Requiem, who's an Appaloosa-dominant Thoroughbred/Appy cross. This cross does very well in gallop comps because you're combining the high speed skill of an Appaloosa with the high gallop from Thoroughbreds. I've also heard that KWPN-dominant Selle Francais/KWPN crosses do very well in show jumping rosettes, but I've never personally tried one. Do note though that you need to start with very high GP parents to go after rosettes.

If you're breeding two purebred horses together, the foal will always take the sire's breed. So with Midnight, her dam was a Thoroughbred and her sire was an Appaloosa. It gets more complicated if you're breeding two crossbreeds together. Let me know if you have more questions; you can post in the forum or PM me. Always excited to talk people's ears off about various projects!

Thank you CrimsonDax!

On my previous account, I was crossing my Nokotas and Mustangs, which did very well in various competitions. I had posted about them here, but its been a while. Nobody really seemed to be enthused about this variant?
I want to do my nokota and mustang cross again.
But, I also want to see how a Nokota and Knabstrupper cross would do? Any suggestions on that?

Nokota/Mustang is an interesting cross. It seems from the calculation I just ran that you end up with a show jumping skill set but still with fairly high stamina and trot. I can definitely see that doing well in quite a few classical competitions. I'd be curious to see the foals if you breed this cross again.

Nokota/Knabstrupper is a good choice because they're both specialized for Trail. I'd probably try to have the cross be Knab-dominant. The foal would have similar dressage to both its parents but its trot would be less than a purebred Nokota. It'd depend on the parents' GP though. You might be able to get a rosette winner with this cross if you can get parents with high GP. I will admit though that my knowledge of western rosette comps is sparse; most of my crosses target classical comps.

I typically target classical competitions. Id have to experiment with a nokota and Knab cross.
I will definitely post my mustang and nokota crosses later.

It depends on what you want to do with it? I don't really think there any "bad" crosses so long as the horse fits the project you want to do.

For a Criollo x Paint cross, you're going to end up with a horse specialized for cutting. Top skill will be speed, followed by dressage and stamina. The Paint improves on the Criollo's gallop, but not enough to change the specialty to barrels. From the back-of-the-napkin math that I just did, I'd probably make the cross Paint-dominant. You're going to be massively improving on the Paint's stamina compared to a purebred, but the stamina would be too low for the cross to be competitive against purebred Criollos.

This is the nokota and knab cross, I was kinda hoping the gallop would be up more, but I supposed its close enough.
