If I bred a high skilled and GP purebred Arabian to another high skilled and GP horse, what would make it the most elite in cross country? I'm thinking a Gypsy Vanner, but I don't have much cross-breeding knowledge to know for sure.

Or, if I bred an Arabian and a Selle Français, what would the best competitions be for the foal?

Thanks!

Anything good that crosses with trakes? I've recently acquired some fairly high GP females I'd like to cross?

GV/ Arab cross or Selle/ arab cross would be great for XC or SJ comps .

You're only limited by your imagination...experiment with different breeds.

I can attest for the fact that Selle/Trakes are good crosses. I've done a few of those and I believe I just recently did a few Trake/GV crosses. Other than that, you could try out some random breeds and see how well they work together. I can link a few of Trake crosses for you.

So I thought I had this genetics thing figured out, but I guess not default smiley (lol) I bred my 50/25/25 mare to a 50/50 stallion, expecting the foal to take the sire's second listed breed. But the foal ended up a Gypsy, which was the dam's dominant breed. What would I have to breed the sire with to get out his dominant breed, a Shagya foal, besides just a purebred Shagya?

Stallion
Mare
Foal

In an uneven cross like that the foal will simply take the breed with the highest percentage in its genetics, which would be Gypsy Vanner in this case.

If you want a Shagya foal you could breed to another cross that has Shagya as the highest percentage in its genetics. Or to a 50/50 mare with breeds that aren't the same as your stallion (in which case the foal will take the sire's second listed breed), or a 50/50 with at least one of those breeds as Shagya as the Shagya will dominate the other two breeds the foal will then have in its genetics.

But the highest percentage isn't Gypsy, the foal is equally 25% Gypsy, Selle, and Shagya. So I figured he would take the sire's second listed breed, which was Shagya.
Even though the mare isn't 50/50, I figured it would work the same since none of her three breeds are the same as the sire's. In this case, of the three breeds that the foal has 25% of, is it random which one is dominant?
Ah, my mistake. I remember reading the mare as 75% Gypsy and looking at it now I see it's actually 50%. Not sure how I read it as 75 since the other two breeds listed are 25% each which wouldn't add up to 100default smiley (lol)

I've bred a couple crosses like that and I think it was a random selection since the foals didn't take the dominant breed from the same slot. I'd have to dig up the foals or find two parents with percentages like that to see if the foal takes the breed from the same slot as yours did.

Haha that's alright, I've definitely made mistakes like that default smiley xd

I bred them again and ended up with another Gypsy foal, so maybe I'll try a different mare. It's just hard because the stallion is half Selle and almost all of my female crosses right now have Selle in them already default smiley (lol) I'm looking to have a Shagya foal that can hopefully take some rankings, so those definitely wouldn't work!

What breeds did you breed together for Wednesday?

Are there any good breeds to cross an Appaloosa with?
