Kate, just so I don't mess up, what exactly IS liberty? Like, bareback and tackless ground work?

If I may butt in to answer a question I wasn't asked... Liberty is completely tackless: no bridles, saddles, halters, or harnesses. It can be both groundwork and riding. In mounted liberty people often use neck ropes. On the ground you can use a riding crop or dressage whip but the idea is to use it only as an extension of your arm, not to smack the horse. Commonly you'll hear mounted liberty referred to as tackless or free riding, and on the ground as plain old liberty.
Please correct me if I'm wrong though. I hope I helped!

Oh no! I hope you feel better soon, j. That sucks!

Here is a picture of tackless riding for you, Jo. Here they are using a neck rope and crop.

Here is liberty work on the ground. Most people usually use a crop or a whip for this.

The first "crop" is a Dressage Whip and the second one is a variation of a Carrot Stick and string from Parelli.

Ok thanks skeeter!
I have a bad habit of calling the dressage whips "crops". Whenever people hear the word "whip" they automatically think cruelty, so I stick to "crop" because those kind of people have no idea what it is. XD Thanks for the correction though.

I wasn't correcting you, I was just telling you what they were in case you didn't know. XD A crop is the short thing, and the long skinny one is a dressage whip and the the long stick with a string is a carrot stick and string.. And no kidding. People won't sit up and learn things, so that's why they think their abusive... Because bad news gets around a lot quicker than good news.

Yeah. "You /whip/ your horse? Wow, you're so cruel!" "Um, I haven't even touched him with it yet..." XD Terrible.

XD I understand you Skeeter. I have a carrot stick that I brought to my barn, and EVERYONE calls it a whip. And I'm like "NO. It's a carrot stick. It's NOT a whip."
