Finally a post just for us cross breeders. The purpose of this topic is for cross breeders to have a place to discuss their crossbreeding programs and to share crossbreeding secrets and advice with others who may be interested in giving crossbreeding a try. Feel free to talk about your crossbreeding programs and your achievements and failures in crossbreeding.

Hi! I’m still pretty new to this game even though I had it in the past I never got to the topic of “cross breeding” what is it? Is it just not breeding the same breed of horses? Like let’s say an Arabian with a Morgan? Is that what cross breeding is?

Sorry, another question
So I have this purebred Arabian mare and I want a different breed foal because she is my only grown mare (due to some glitch with the foals I have, but it’s hopefully getting fixed)

Do I have to get a purebred stud of the breed I want to foal to be? And hope the foal turns out how I want?

To answer your first question from the other post, yes cross breeding is just breeding more than one breed to make a mixed foal.
As for this question, in 50/50 crosses the foal takes the breed of the stud...when you get into more complex crosses the math changes, but as far as I know the default for a 50/50 cross is the father's breed.

If Im not wrong, by default for 50/50, the stud's breed is taken by the foal. If not, its just whatever percentage of breed that is the highest after averaging the stud and mares.

If I have a horse that is say 50% thoroughbred and 50% Quarter horse and cross it with another of the same crossing, (50% thoroughbred and 50% Quarter horse) and the both horses dominant gene was the thoroughbred, would the foal have the same 50-50 or a 75-25?

As just mentioned above, I thought that on 50/50 crosses, the sire's second listed breed is how to foal will present... I'm glad I just did a test run without tears because I just got a selle from a shetland sire with shetland listed as his second breed... This foal.

Can anyone help explain why this happened? Is it anything to do with the fact that the mother's second listed breed is a selle francais?

How do you get around the "a team horse can only cover team horses thing?"

I am looking to do crosses of Purvian paso/TWH but at last cant get any top coverings to do so.

I found that 25% QH and 75% TB crosses won extremely well in their own level of Cross Country competitions, both TB only and open. Not sure why. I had a project going for a little bit there but its hard since you essentially have to breed your own crosses and work up GP from there and it was just really difficult to go anywhere on your own so I set the project aside. I might try a few different crosses later on but for now my focus is elsewhere.

Have the random urge to make a TB-dominant dressage-GP horse. I have a tb x paso mare almost ready to go; what should i look for to add trot and/or lower speed? or should I start with a different cross? any advice welcome!

A Friesian might be a good cross! Lowest skill is speed, second highest skill is trot, and highest skill is dressage.

I'm in search of an EC forum post which listed every breed's top skills and the best competitions to get wins, I swear I've seen it somewhere but simply cannot track it down! If anyone can point me in the right direction I'd be so glad to have that reference

I was thinking of making a well rounded horse 'breed' so instead of having a breed that is super good at one skill and having the rest awful they would (theoretically) be good in all of the skills without having one compromise the other. I want to start with the Marwari breed and then add ones to make up for their lacking skills

I've bred a few like that. Outlander here was one of my first I had to get crazy with the breeds I added, due to what GP was available in public covers back then (and my actual goal was just to get at least 1000 GP in each skill, rather than necessarily having them all about the same), so it's possible you could go a different route with your breeds now. In terms of comps, these all-rounders aren't usually the best, due to the way the competition skill sets work. His genetics are evenly distributed to all 6, which lowers them, rather than just 3 highly concentrated skills, like most breeds. It's still a fun project though!

My main goal for this project is to have a 'breed' that is not only able to have a high skill and high GP, but pretty much versatile in terms of competitions as well which i'm not sure is possible because of the comp set up, but I still want to try. As long as the Skill and GP goes up for the breed I'll be happy
