I admit that an odd number of limbs is possible, and that might be cute and cool, but this particular new "special horse" really scares me. You're absolutely right.

Don't bother with auctions or directs. Directs go by so quickly that you have to click "buy" before you get a chance to look at the price or you probably won't get it. They're a matter of first come, first serve. And I think only 1 player gets the divine, but don't quote me on that. So if you don't have the fastest connection then don't bother with it at all unless you're after the less valuable divines that clog up the sales because nobody wants them. The valuable ones will disappear so quickly that they don't even show up for half the players, and the other half can see their price and click buy, only to discover that the divine was already sold. Direct sales are brutal. There is a timer counting down to tell you when the next divine will be available along with a picture of the divine that will pop up when that timer finishes. You can refresh your page when there's 2 or 3s left before the divine pops up and hope that you'll get a chance to buy it, but that strategy will shoot you in the foot if your page takes longer than 2-3s to load... Internet connection speed is critical if you want to win anything here.

And auctions? There isn't a player on the server who'd give up the chance to buy a divine they want for equus instead of passes. Auctions are equus only sales, and only the richest of the rich players win anything over the first day or 2. The standard price for a divine was around 30-50 MILLION equus. Yes, 30 000 000 equus at the cheaper end. The expensive end was around 120mil from what I observed. Or possibly even higher. The auctions are timed with the timer counting down. It will reset to 30s every time someone places a bid in the last 30s to ensure that the highest bidder wins. If you get lucky, then you may just be able to grab a divine for 10-20mil when there's fewer players online or on the last day or so after the rich players have used up their equus in bidding wars against each other. But don't bank on there being few players online - howrse makes the release schedule public, so it's possible for players to come online when the specific divine that they want is scheduled for sale. Although, the divines do stay up for 30mins - 2hrs or so before the last 30s of the sale. The bidding wars only really pick up in those last 30s, so you could place a bid when there's 40mins left and leave it... only to find that you've been outbid and didn't win the divine if you check again after the sale ends. They added notifications to tell you when you've been outbid, but I've found those to be more clutter than useful. Also, there's usually multiple auctions going at the same time. The one with the least time left on the timer will appear on top of the list... meaning that the order of the auctions list will change rapidly when there are 2 or more ongoing bidding wars for divines with a timer with less than 30s left. So make sure that you're clicking "bid" on the correct sale before bidding. I myself have almost bought the wrong horse a few times before because of the constant switching... and you can't cancel a bid that you placed, so if you bid on the wrong horse then all you can do is hope that someone else outbids you. Because you can only bid on 1 horse at a time, so bidding on another one will lock you out of the bidding war that you were actually participating in. Also, auctions can be cruel. Players intentionally push the price up to lock poorer players out of the sale, so don't go into the auctions with expectations. And there's always a richer player lurking in the background and waiting to step in in the last 30s of the war...
If you want to win anything in auctions, then start stocking up on equus well in advance. I know that a common strategy to get equus is to farm leather and make and sell tack from that leather. There are other ways too. But my point is that it doesn't happen overnight - you need to save for a while considering that 1 divine costs 40 MILLION equus.

Every time you buy a divine from auctions or directs, you lock yourself out of that specific sale type for 12 hours. You won't be able to observe the sales in that time if they haven't changed anything. There will be a timer counting down your 12 hours, so you'll know when you can buy another divine again. This is nice because it locks rich players out too, but also pointless in that regard because there's always more rich players to replace the one that just got locked out.

Reserved sales are the only way that will guarantee that you will win a divine. They'll just sit there and wait for you to buy them. They switch out every few hours, so you can wait for the next lot if you're not interested in the current lot. You can only buy 1 copy of each divine, so it'll disappear from your reserveds after you buy it. They only added reserveds last year and all the sales were passes only sales, so I'm not sure if that'll change.

The divines sold per sale type are exclusive to the sale type that they're sold in. So if a divine is sold in auction, then it will not appear in reserveds or directs and visa versa. Howrse will put up a list of the divines that will be available along with the number of copies of each one that's still available to be sold. You'll need to check the forum for the prices. Beware though, there's always a player spreading their negativity about not being able to win anything from the auctions in the forum, so maybe don't read all the comments

I think someone uploaded a screenshot of a preview with prices on it a few pages ago. Those prices are more or less what you can expect. Most divines will cost 1-2.5k passes. That's the equivalent of 5-15 TCs, which is really cheap. Outside of black friday, divines will cost 5-8k standardly, with the expensive ones priced at 10-15k and event divines at 2.6k passes. So black friday is the best time to get divines because the only time that you'll get them cheaper is if you luck out when trying for them with the items. And that is very rare... save up passes and equus in advance next year to guarantee that you will get something from the sale. There are some cheaper black friday divines - male greyfell priced just under 800p, some star signs for cheap and maybe chimeras. The chimeras/pets/wilds only pay you back about 770p(?) after being tamed. They're good for establishing a small pass income if you don't have any and they're cheaper than most other pass droppers, but they don't last forever and they probably won't pay you back all of what you spent on them.
Also, don't waste passes on gypsum if he shows up. He's not worth it. Rather spend those passes on any other divine or save them for when you see something that you like... save yourself the frustration and just don't buy him until you have passes to throw down the drain
