I'm honestly a bit more disturbed by the name...default smiley (d)I was so sure she would be called Anime, which would have been perfectly ok if you can ignore those stockings. But Otaku? They might as well make an Americana series featuring Grand Canyon, Hollywood and Nerd

I was expecting Josei or something similar. The design is acceptable, but the name is really not fitting :c

The design is far from acceptable in my opinion, it just makes a mockery of Japanese culture whereas divines like Samurai and Shodo pay homage. The glasses just look awful and so does the actual horse under that eyesore of a costume. She could offer a perk on par with Jade and I still wouldn’t want her!

I don't know enough of Japanese culture to say anything about it, so I'll defer to more expert people and say that I'm sorry, I didn't know it was offensive. It seemed like a "Normal magical girl" to me but I'm hardly an expert on that.

I think we had a similar discussion with the Holi Festival a few months ago?

I personally think the Holi festival was fine, the divine looked awesome, it’s paying homage to a Hindu culture, just as the Grail divines will be paying homage to some aspects of my own. But this atrocity of a divine is something else. She seems to be based on the American definition of Otaku “a girl obsessed with anime/Japanese culture” rather than the original Japanese meaning essentially “someone so obsessed with something they never leave the house”.

Haven't gotten much so far but here are the prizes I've gotten so far from Cards if anyone's making a full prize list default smiley :)
Bronze:
Kaeru (Daruma)
Red 2** Classical saddle cloth

Silver:
Achilles Heel

Also just want to say, someone said that a silver prize is 5 aging points. I think it's ridiculous that they chose that to be silver, but put a Daruma worth around 700 passes right now as a bronze prize. Darumas shouldn't even be offered as prizes full stop in my opinion, it completely damages their worth pretty much permanently default smiley (n)

Here’s what I got for Cards prizes so far:

Bronze —
50 x Wood
1 Whip

Silver —
15,000 equus

It looks like the Bronze prizes are very mixed concerning value judging by what I’ve seen...
And quite disappointed with how the AP range seems to be doing, too. For a silver prize, I would consider APs ranging from 10 — 15 more suitable, and the bronze tier would have 5 APs

I do not like that Etrian is a prize. He was quite easily achievable in Tale of Etria and then also came back to the sales. The people who already have him do not need an additional one. I would be more fond of a Chimera, Wild horse or Falabella. My opinion.

this Otaku chick isn't the first to have an inaccurate name. Let's not forget that Kigurumi was originally called Kaijū. And look at Bonsai, who looks like more of a sakura tree, Sakura looks more like a geisha, and Fuji is questionable to what he represents.
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

@xarxes,
definately an improvement with the eyes I think!

it's so cringeworthy that the Japanese inspired divines have such glaring inaccuracies and consistently incorrect usage of Japanese phrases. i think they should be treading carefully considering the political climate and be double checking and proof checking everything a thousand times so as to not seem careless or insensitive in their representation of culture. it's great to have different cultures represented on the game but it must be executed in a respectful and accurate manner!

when you google the word otaku, it clearly shows that Japanese culture traditionally considers the word to be offensive so it's a little confusing when they use it in the westernised way

I feel Howrse should seriously reconsider both the design and the name.Enough has been said about the design in posts above, no need to rehash.

The name should be changed, Otaku a serious societal issue that Japan faces. There is absolutely nothing cute about it in the least. Also, there are several subcultures of Otaku that are strongly associated with the word and not at all acceptable on a game for all ages. I'm appalled by the lack of research done on this.

I would also like to point out that translating Japanese to English is always a tricky business. Without going too far into linguistics, Japanese (as well as many Asian languages) rely heavily on tonal inflection which is why there are many ways to write what appears to the same word. (They use different characters/variations to signify the tones) Howrse should be very careful on translating Japanese words into roman characters as they lose the tonal inflections and therefore create a word that could mean ANY of the different definitions as now the tones are ambiguous.

TL/DR lots of research should be done before to ensure the word you're trying to translate from a tonal heavy language doesn't have alternate meanings that it could be misinterpreted for.

To be fair, most names they used so far are common things of Japanese culture as we know it (we as in Western countries). Things like Samurai, Bonsai and Kabuki are a part of our language now, and have been for years, so while I see your point, most of these names are pretty common. [NOT talking about those we don't have in-game yet!] default smiley :)

Agreed, I meant this more in a general sense since it appears they are keen on expanding this collection and clearly dropped the ball on the background research this time.
