However, I do believe Howrse is misguided to make all promos pass dependant. If a promo is based on skill/strategy/patience, it should be winnable by skill/strategy/patience.

The promotions offer divines in luck items, and as part of the Horseshoe collecting to win a divine simply for participating in the event. Most of the promotions can be won with effort, and this includes using passes earned from playing the game - of which all players can get 31 every month, without spending any real money at all.

True Raf's Mum, but it still doesn't alter my argument. For example, if you went round to a friend's to play a board game, how would you feel if half way through they said 'by the way, you can only win if you pay me'. Or what if who won the Olympics was decided by who paid most? You should be able to win a game by playing a game.

As for passes... yep, there can be some pleasure in earning them and spending them within Howrse. But that's not within the particular promo game. And killing pass horses is not exactly my most fun thing to spend my time doing. And newbies may be put off by that and not know how to earn in other ways. Apparently numbers are falling: newbies are needed!

What Howrse is doing is no different then what the creators of free to play games have done for years (even dating back to the days before games like Runescape).
With patience and luck you can actually get good items in many of the promos, even the ones more geared towards pass buyers, without spending real money or passes.

Thats how I have the divines and wild horses that I have. I got them by being patient and picking and choosing the ones I really wanted to grab and in some promos it meant not getting any other "major" items along the way.

Sure you may not like that they do make things lean more to pass buyers but without money a business shuts down very fast and ad revenue only goes so far.

Try to chill a bit and just enjoy the game for what it is.

On a side note: I'm actually looking forward to the next promo default smiley (8) it seems fun

@the other testers:

Do you guys notice a pattern in the chests that you receive? Four times in a row I've gotten three wooden chests followed by one gold. Trying to figure out the rate at which crystal chests or purple ones or whatever happen.

Idk if it's random or not lol

It took me 12

wooden chests, after the tutorial chests) to drop a golden one. Another 2 wooden chests dropped and a golden one appeared. I suppose it's random? Unless there is a pattern to it. 12 wooden chests equals a golden one, 2 more equals a golden one. I'm leaning towards random at the moment.

Also, potential strategy
Click to display

It reminds me of a cross between the Elemental Mine and Potions. The game plays like the Mine, but the chests/points strategy reminds me of the Potions.

As a potential strategy (we're only 4 days in so it's a little early to tell) I would make sure your chest slots are constantly full and counting down to open as the divine meter increases when a chest falls into a "slot", not when you open them. Wood chests earn 2 points, Gold earns 3 and Crystal earns 4. The 2 daily boosters you get is enough to drop 1 wooden chest from a 12 hour wait to about 3 1/2-4 hours (as using 1 booster takes 4 hours off the wait and wooden chests have a 12 hour wait). As soon as your 4 hours are up, open that chest up ASAP so you can continue playing to drop another chest and earn points for the divine meter.

Once Golden and Crystal chests start dropping, that will affect your cool down times as the golden chests take 18 hours to open, while the crystal chests take 24

The Explosion you see next to the grid is free for the first time each day, after that it costs 10k to completely clear the board. It does drop a chest as well. I'm only see the Explosion as beneficial if you don't feel like clicking, or want to make sure you're dropping chests quickly, instead of taking the time to smash blocks and fill the chest meter(you can see the next upcoming chest and the meter indicating how long until it drops in the grid's 3rd column. The more blocks you clear at once, the more the meter increases) Your boosters are in the top right, and if you have 3 chests occupying your slots you can pay 1 pass to unlock them all at once without using boosters or waiting.

I was very much looking towards the next promo... until I heard the pass estimate. Personally I'm hoping to raise the passes within Howrse, but I probably won't be able to.

And I have played other free to play games where it is possible to get the top prize by skill/strategy/patience. It doesn't stop them getting money in other ways, as I said a few posts back.

Howrse have launched the ambassador scheme saying they want to help newbies progress in the game. Well, looks like I've not been chosen (rumour is those who have already know). I just hope they've chosen people who will honestly say what they don't like, and not people who are happy as Howrse is. There's a lot of good in this game, which is why I'm still here. But I think Howrse needs to make some changes if they are going to keep running in the long term.

Anyway, yep, this argument looks like it's going to get circular if it goes on any longer... so any more spoilers?default smiley :-xdefault smiley ^)

As far as strategy goes:

I haven't had to use that bomb once yet. combos are super easy to get and I find myself really looking forward to most aspects of this promo. I think that it will be the one to spend passes on. Great divine, fun gameplay, and FANTASTIC prizes.

My strategy is loosely as follows:

I get all slots filled up and use one pass to open everything at once. Then I can get three more chests, thats 6 per day. I have gotten 3 ish gold ones! No crystal ones outside of the tutorial. MY estimate on here will be more expensive than what it costs me to play when it comes to int. server. I'm definitely going to set alarms to open chests AS SOON as they are able to, and that should help a lot.

Thanks Legacy Ann, that does look great! Strangely...

The free to play and get top prizes game I've been thinking of has a 'chest room' as part of regular play, where you have to wait for a chest to unlock or can get it sooner if you pay the game's pass equivalent. Great for those that don't want a game to 'drag-on' and 'merge' into infinity. LOL It's offline with some kind of technical problems right now though.

That's the point Raf's Mum is making, you actually *DO NOT* have to pay real money in order to play and win items and divines. I never did pay anything - the only thing on my account that is bought with actual money is my Mars divine, which was a gift from my husband - he himself bought 20 passes on my account and depleted them entirely with the TC so that I get Mars - after I spent everything I had to get him without any luck. So in fact there are many successful players here that are the living proof this game can be played without any investment - including myself. True, you will not become very rich and successful very fast, but gradually you can build up an entire equine empire here without even the slightest investment other than your time and efforts. I am still very far away from the top players, but for someone that never invested here anything else but their time, brains and skills, I consider myself quite successful player.

When you get to a certain level you will not even have to kill horses for passes if you do not want to. My main income comes from the Items Exchanges and the skillers on the market (produced by other players). I make from them more money (meaning passes) than I could by killing pass horses. You just have to be more patient until you get there. It took me few years to be where I am now. That doesn't mean it is impossible.

Thanks Primehelix. Of course you are right. Personally I'm hoping that now I can access the black pearl I'll be able to earn some passes that way.

But I still think games of skill should be winnable by skill. And I still think if Howrse wants more newbies then some things have got to change default smiley ;) I think maybe we have to agree to disagree lol

Everything in life is "pay to win" in essence. You want the best cars, horses, house, food? You have to pay for it. No one is going to hand you things because you are good or a nice person. Work hard to earn money to spend on the bonuses in life.

Are they releasing all the Zodiac horses like Gemini is right now? In the sales? Or is it just Gemini? Because I'd rather have Cancer rather than Gemini if this is how they're going to do it.

Otherwise it undermines the sense of achievement in playing the game well, whether you can buy passes or not. Customers who can't buy passes now (or won't while they feel they are being treated as cash cows) might in future. Customers who can might pay to speed through a game, get two copies of a divine, or buy direct. Which are other ways to offer paid opportunities without meaning those without passes can't still succeed.

I think too much of business these days goes on what I think of as The Apprentice model: where it's all about making the deal, as much money as possible, and the customer is seen as almost a competitor. Make some money and move on to the next deal.... There are other models though, that centre on customer service and long term retention of happy customers.

Boy I am with you 100% of the way. I am extremely active on another sim game that doesn't run events that depend on money, it's dependent on a player being active and interacting with the event. Howrse doesn't structure their events to be that way, they're boring and consume about 10 minutes a day, and it shows- the activity on the other game is always booming 24/7 and the atmosphere is incredible. <3

We have no way of knowing beforehand. This is the first Zodiac we've seen this year, so it's hard to say.

The prizes for the next promo look awesome, I'm glad there's another divine that can be achieved that isn't the top one, so maybe in theory a little easier? We'll have to see. default smiley (8)

It sounds like testing just started, but are the prizes based on chests you open? So I assume Liten is in Crystal if that's how it works?

Yeah, when I opened a crystal chest I saw Liten. Crystal chests are pretty rare though, and you'd have to open a few default smiley (8)
