companion bonuses

Does anyone know definitively if the bonus from companions is always ON, or is it a case of only if your horse is awake?
for example, if you say enter a comp or two, and then you do other actions like groom and feed, does your horse miss out on the bonus for the first comp?
likewise, if your horse is VIP auto put to bed with a groom action, does it then lose the companion bonus for the rest of its day?
I ask this, because I was trying to see what the bonus for a specific companion on a horse was, and it did not show while the horse was jusst waiting to be worked for the day. Only after I did an action with the horse did the companion bonus show up on the bonus list.

thanks in advance if anyone KNOWS vs just "thinks it ought to be"

The companion awakes with the first action no matter what you do, so your horse won't have the bonus for the first comp, only after it. It doesn't matter if your horse is sleeping tho; the companion is still awake for that moment of age.

That is the reason why you have to be careful when actively inscribing horses to the grand prix.

Oh, and if you put the horse to bed regularly the bonus stays active until the daily reset, so I presume with auto-bed it will also stay active
