because this isn't the real great challenge but something a little different. wasn't it possible to get divine in luck items as well? or isn't that this time?

It's still the "real"

Great Challenge, that is not any different than normal except in terms of design. It's the lottery that will be replaced with the Derby this time. And finding the divine in the luck item works the same way as usual. During the Great Challenge VIPs can find the divine horse Caryopsis in HoPs. VIPs who choose to wait, and non-VIPs that have to wait can find Caryopsis in HoPs once the Derby starts. Waiting until the Derby starts is the likely cheaper option as you can get the special offer of open two HoPs, get one free if you collect enough horseshoes during the GC, and after you open 15 HoPs and don't find him, Caryopsis will be placed in the reserved sales and will decrease by 1 pass each time you open a HoP and don't find him, with 5 passes being the lowest price it will go.

Is one only bonus items for the Derby the items that covers up the lowest number on the board? Are there no other items or bonus packs like spending a pass to gain multiple races or opening a luck item to gain flags?

Say hello to Caryopsis.
"Caryopsis is one of the Plant Kingdom horses.
She can be watered instead of drinking.
This horse's skills increase when you give them Droppings. The skills increase depends on the amount of Droppings the horse is given, as well as the season in the game.
When she reaches 80 skill points, she can be pruned. Her skills will then be reset to 0, but she'll give you 1 x Pass seeds!
This mare cannot be sold."

There is also a promo on preprod where you can grab her from the HoPs - not sure when/whether that's coming here, but it took me 20 HoPs to get her. After 15 I was given the option to buy her from reserved sales for 20 passes, with the price dropping one pass with every next HoP I used. c: Additionally, she comes with 80 skill points, so your first pass seed is given as soon as you get her.

I don't know if anyone's done this yet, but the Derby is basically an arcade game where you have four horses lined up to race to set off a light at the far end. You pay your fee, pick a horse, and then click a button to throw a ball at numbered slots. Number of the slot = number of steps your horse gets to advance. (The other three horses racing beside you are automated.)
Depending on your placement for setting off the light (first/second/third/fourth), you get a certain number of flags. As far as I can tell, it's 15 for first, 14 for second, and 13 for third, so you could guess that it's 12 for fourth. (Anyone care to confirm?)
With the flags you earn from the race, you can buy prizes, which I think will be appreciated -> you can pick your own prizes from a list.

Regarding bonus coins: (@Spyder)
Bonus items block off the hole with the lowest value on the board. So, the first you use blocks off the 3, then the 4, and up, to a max of 5 used per ball throw, where you would definitely get a 6. However, on the next throw all holes are unblocked again, which seems unreasonable - we'd need 50+ bonus coins to guarantee a 6 on every throw.
They don't seem very important to me. I've done three races; got third on the first and third ones, with no bonus items, and got 13 flags from both, then got first on the second one, using 6 bonus items, and got 15 flags - but that's only a difference of 2 flags. Over the span of the three races I only got my ball into the "3" slot thrice, and seemed to get "5" the most.

The divine is also available in HOP's. After 15 tries, it is offered to you in the reserved sales for 20 passes, and with each new HOP you open, the price decreases down to 5 passes. So if you open 16 HOPs, the divine will be 19 passes.

Without using the reserved sales it took me 52 passes to get the divine

Misc Info about the D____ Promo:
Click to display
* Prices per round are as follows: free - 5 - 20 - 80 - 320 - 1280 -> and increase four times with every new race you play. (Resetting back every day.) Note: this "quadrupling per race" caps at 500k (on preprod, anyway). After the first race that costs you 500k, the price stops increasing and any further races you want to play that day still cost 500k.

If you want to run the race automatically (= no need to click on the "throw" button and wait for the ball's animation to play, this option just gives you the results instantly), you need to pay an additional 50k.

* Spyder mentioned it somewhere, but the very last ball-throw of the race determines, almost always, which horse wins. The automatic horses move after you have finished your turn, so if you're slightly behind and get a 6 on this last move, you're pretty likely to win (depending on where exactly your horse is standing). Therefore, if you have bonuses to use, save them for this last bit.

* Bonus coins can be caught in UFOs. The one I just caught had 5 in it, so I'd guess they contain 1-6 coins each.

* Like lottery tickets, bonus coins can be offered to friends, and you can ask for them 6 times a day (500eq each time).

Without using reserved sales it took me 20 tries to get her the first time, then 30 or so to get the next one. Unless our probability of getting her in HoPs is increased by the time the Derby is released, it seems to be a very expensive divine to get.
The price also depends on

whether you have HoPs in stock, and whether you gain enough horseshoes during the GC to get the best special offer of open 2 get 1 free. Even if you have to go through 15 HoPs some of them will be free ones. Ideally if you have enough in stock you won't spend passes unless you have to buy it from the sales

In some cultures over the world - yes, and even staring at age of infants. But I have no idea if Maori (excuse my incorrect typing, I just don't have the special letters on my keyboard to type it correctly) do as well. Regarding tattoos in Maori culture I am pretty much aware of the women's facial tattoo, and I suppose it is the most famous one, but I have no idea about children/adolescents. Someone better educated or/and Maori could give a better opinion on the matter.

Māori children do not traditionally have Tattoos default smiley (lol)
Tattoos (or Moko) are used to mark transition to adulthood or other coming of age events for Māori. The facial Tattoos are most famous due to the head being the most sacred area of the body so facial tattoos are significantly more popular. Also, fun fact, every single tattoo is completely unique to the person who owns it. A persons Moko generally defines them as a being and tells their story default smiley (y)

Yessss!
@By It's Not Me
I might be wrong about this as I know next to nothing about the Māori (and I certainly don't intend to claim to), but I believe I read something somewhere (perhaps in an player-given explanation about the Celebration, as I can't find anything about this in the actual promo descriptions) that said that what this Celebration is for the coming-of-age of many of the children. I think there was something about the offerings being a part of the necessary ritual for the children to transition to an adult? I'm not quite sure, but I am almost certain that I read that the Celebration promo is supposed to be a coming-of-age event. If so, based on what Springtalon said about tattoos being "used to mark transition to adulthood or other coming of age events for Māori," the tattoos on the children could very well have been researched by the Howrse team.
But again, I could definitely be wrong, so don't take my word for it haha.

Could we stick to discussing up and coming things rather than the current promotion here please. This thread is meant to be for players to find out about future events and to share what they know and there's a thread devoted to the current promotion. Thank you.
