The Safe Haven's Dirty Little Secret - by wenwillwego

Howrse is a "sim" game, meaning that it simulates real life. Think about something like the Safe Haven in real life. What kind of a horse retirement facility would pay you $400 to take care of your unwanted horse for the rest of its days? That's right, none.
Imagine what the auctions would look like if there were no Safe Haven. They would be flooded with literally thousands of horses whose owners were quitting the game, bad crosses, or aged geldings with no skills. There would not be enough players with enough money to absorb these horses.
Now bring this back to real life. I see dozens of profiles with pictures of cute little ponies with cute sayings, calling for an end to horse slaughter. I know your hearts are in the right spot, but I don't think these people understand what the real consequences would be for horses. There would be hundreds of thousands of unwanted horses in the <?XML:NAMESPACE PREFIX = ST1 />United States alone.
Hundreds. Of. Thousands.
Of these horses, thousands would be starved to death, people would try to release these domesticated animals into the wild where they would not survive, and much worse things would happen to many of the horses. I know slaughter is terrible (any slaughter, I am a vegan :) ) but in this case it is the lesser of two evils. It is great if you support your local humane society or horse rescue operation, but there just aren’t enough of these places with enough money to absorb all of the horses who would flood the market if horse slaughter were to be made illegal.
Understand too that I am not speaking against the Safe Haven, as I have explained, it is something we need on the game. However, I think it is an excellent illustration of the roll of slaughterhouses in real life.

I agree totally with this statement above...I have finally realized, after many emails, and letters to government officials about horse slaughter, that there is a reason for the disposal of creatures, no matter how beautiful they may be. I hope you will open your mind to this concept, but not close your hearts to the many horses who need help. Go to a shelter and adopt (more power to you!), i myself volunteer regularly. I will happily accept any emails, supporting or challenging me on this subject. I am happy to talk about it in a CREATIVE DISCUSSION, but please dont yell at me, or fight, and i will be a happy camper!
