Newbie Tips:

1) Don't start an Equestrian Center right away. While they can and do give you a lot of money in the long run, in the early stages, they're a money suck. Wait until you've got quite a bit of Equus in your reserve (at least 500,000).

2) Get a Ploutos' Parchment on horses that have Philosopher's Stones as soon as you can, if they don't come with one. That will guarantee you 80 - 160 (depending on their size) Equus per horse, per day you work them, indefinitely.

3) Before you start buying horses, watch the sales, both Auctions and Direct Buy, for a few days to get a feel for what a given breed and quality of horse is worth. Patience and luck can pay off, as you can get horses for prices well below the most common price if you're careful.

4) Similarly, before you dive into the Item Exchange, make sure you understand what each Black Market item is worth.

5) Keep your horses in Equestrian Centers that ask less than 30 Equus a day and provide ALL feed (fodder, oats, carrots and mash) whenever possible. Missions, which horses can partake in starting at two years of age, guarantee you at least that much per day, and up to 60 Equus for most equines/donkeys and 120 Equus for draft horses.

6) Time your horses' stays in Equestrian Centers such that they need to be put in a new one just before they turn 3. Put them in an Equestrian Center that provides all the right tack including ear bonnets, leg wraps, and saddle pads for the lowest price possible, and put the horse in the center until they turn 3 years 2 months at least. This can save you thousands compared to purchasing everything yourself.

7) If you get a Luck Category item as a prize from one of the events, by all means use it, but don't buy one early on, even if you're buying Passes. While you can get spectacular stuff from them, they're called Luck Category for a reason, and you're as likely to regret it as not if you buy one.

8) Once you're done with the tutorials, you'll get two Objectives a day that you can complete for Passes. DO NOT complete the Objectives that require you to remove Black Market items, again, even if you're buying Passes. At most, you'll get 20 Passes for completing the objective. To regain the items will cost considerably more than that, or the luck to earn a replacement as a prize during an event. Such a circumstance is not worth the 100-pass Horn of Plenty *luck category* item you get if you complete a week's worth of objectives.

9) If you can't afford to buy Passes, don't despair over the cool stuff in the Black Market or even the Divine/Special horses. Just be patient. Howrse is very generous with Passes through the Objectives. Special horses of all sorts can be gotten via accumulating Shards or winning them outright in an event. Black Market items go up for sale for Equus via the Piggy Bank and are prizes in events. You'll be able to get your hands on literally everything eventually.
