The starting horses suck. So as soon as you have enough money, buy a better horse-- not necessarily *much* better, but at least a bit, and preferably pre-trained and equipped- When choosing an EC to board a horse in, make sure their missions pay out at least enough to cover boarding your horse there
- If a competition uses your horse's three best skills, when possible choose competitions for your horse's breed only
To increase your odds of winning without manually going through every opposing horse's skills, get a decent horse and leave their worst skill completely untrained. Pick a competition type where the first skill it asks for is that worse skill, but make sure the other necessary skills are very high; this way it shows easier competitions, where your other skills are out of proportion to what it expects, especially if you pick competitions open to all horses and not just your breed
- First of all, don't worry about getting divines if you don't have money to spend. Most events are calibrated so that only players *with passes* can win. You'll get one eventually by luck, or by stocking up enough free passes over time.
- Instead, during events go for what will get you more valuable items *quickly*, because you can always sell those or horses with them equipped, sometimes in exchange for passes.
- If you collect some passes this way, pick a particular event where you already know how it works and can log in regularly for the whole event, and only use them on that, if you're really intent on getting divines.
- Acquire unusual horses. Not high GP, necessarily, because that is always growing. Instead, blow however much equus or free passes you need to on a unicorn, donkey, or draft horse. Why?
- Zeus bolts are wonderful! You can often buy a male unicorn, donkey, draft horse, etc for much cheaper than a female. If you can get a Zeus bolt through a contest or what have you, you can change its gender and there you go!
- Once you have a breeding female, keep at least one of the male offspring, and offer coverings-- the possible breeding pool is usually limited enough here, especially for donkeys and draft horses, that even studs with low GP can offer coverings at a much higher price than normal
Use the equestrian center (once you unlock it)! That is the single most reliable money-maker without divine horses! Raise cows! Sell leather if you're short on patience, otherwise take the time to craft it into expensive things like whips and saddles!
