Does Jupiter do better in classical or western comps? And which ones specifically? Or does it not matter unless you pay for certain skills?

He'll do well in either discipline depending on which skill(s) you add points to. You don't pay for his skill points. When you go on rides with him he will accumulate points that you can then apply as you choose. He has an evenly distributed skill set as a baseline, which makes it tricky to get wins when you're just starting with him.

A good method is to just load the points onto speed skill since it's the second most important skill in gallop and trot competitions, and the 3rd skill for show jumping and cutting. Classical will therefore give you 3 competition options. Just make sure not to add skills to gallop, trot or jump, otherwise he'll have to enter higher difficulty.

You'll have to carefully compare the skills of the divines you enter against when you first get him, because his skills are so low.
Jupiter can perform well in either discipline. How well he performs overall and in which particular competition he excels will depend on which skills you opt to increase once you get points from riding in the Whirlpool Galaxy. It's your game, so it's up to you to decide what direction you want to go in.
