How does one start their own breeding line? For example if I want to start a team, do I need to start with foundation foals?

You don't need to start with foundations.

For an affix, you just need to be the producer, so you could buy a pair of horses to breed (or just a mare and use a public cover), and then put your personal or team affix on the foal.
to start a team you need to be a VIP. to be on a team you need to be invited to join one. Check the team ranks for teams for the breed you are interested in and look for one that is looking for members
