How does some players have over 1 billion eq? I barely keep 500,000 on my acc. How can I get more?

Minimize your spending and do as many equus gaining activities as you can--the ones I have found that net me the most equus are selling unneeded Black Market items in the exchanges each week, and entering Divines in competitions.
only 10 players (as of todays update) have over 1billion equus. more players probably have less than you do than you think. depending on how long you've been playing 500k is considered for some a lot. and those players have been playing a LONG LONG time. that kind of equus doesn't happen overnight.
Those players have been on Howrse for a very long time.

Be careful with spending - don't overpay for unneeded EC perks, for instance. If you make more then you spend, it'll stack up over time.

There are many ways to get Equus: selling unwanted BMIs, doing missions, entering competitions, selling horses, etc. Most importantly, using your Equestrian Center. Boarders will only net you so much, but if you create and sell items, you can make tons of Equus every month.

For instance, if you have all 6 large meadows set up for raising Longhorns, you'll get over 150k leather per month. You can sell that straight off for a significant profit, or turn it into lunges (which only require leather) or other items via your workshops. You can have 5 large workshops going at a time, which will churn out items pretty fast, which you can then sell for even more profit. Lunges are pretty good, but if you have your EC in the mountains and get iron, 3*** classical bridles I think are most profitable.
Agree with both other answers.

The base of it all is: earn more than you spend. It's easy to check this on the equus page where you find total earnings and total expenses.
If you click that, you see more details about the categories in which you earn more/less than you spend.

For me personally it's the divine competitions that give me around 2 ton equus a day. I takes some work for sure!
Selling items will work, especially BMI.
If you have good stallions (100% blup, good GP) you can offer coverings that make a lot of money.

In the Breeder's Manual is also a list of things you can do to get more equus (although I would not recommend them all): https://www.howrse.com/aide/manuelEleveur/?type=section-5-1
Fx selling passes does NOT weigh up against the equus you get for them, and selling droppings is not very wise since you will need them for a lot of things in your future Howrse carreer.
