How do I have a reserve of least 5000 equals

Your reserve means the number of equus you have.
Keep in mind that further in the game, there is a beginner's objective that asks you to have 50,000 equus in your reserve. So be prepared :)

* You can do comps indeed. If you have divines, they can do high kitty comps and give you lots of equus every day.
* By playing the tutorial of Ascent of Olympus, the game mode you find in the banner on the top left of the page, you get 3 Greek Hero divines for free. They will stay in your account forever. They have high skills, so putting them in 7 comps a day really pays off.
* Play all the events. The prizes vary from equus to pass seeds to Black Market items that you can use or sell for equus (via Item Exchange that you can find under Trade). For example a Chronos' Timer or a Zeus' Bolt will easily go for the maximum which is 300,000 equus.
* Stroke 5 Xanthos a day, congratulate 5 Topaz a day, they will give you equus/passes/maybe a Horn of Plenty (that can also give equus).

You do lessons, and comps, and sell stuff and horses, and get your daily salary, until you have a reserve of 5000 equus. You'll find your reserve at the top of the page
You can also complete in the pinata event and if you complete 2 pinatas you should get around 15 to 20,000 equus [it takes a little bit of time to build up wealth but if you are frugal on what you spend and spend less than you earn, then over time you will build up wealth]
