When choosing a new coat for your horse with the Golden Apple, you're given the option of a type of coat. The coats with, say for example X/300, that means that a maximum of 300 copies of that coat has a limited amount of horses that can use it. Once 300 copies have been used, it becomes a retired coat and no one else can use it.
