Finally a post just for us cross breeders. The purpose of this topic is for cross breeders to have a place to discuss their crossbreeding programs and to share crossbreeding secrets and advice with others who may be interested in giving crossbreeding a try. Feel free to talk about your crossbreeding programs and your achievements and failures in crossbreeding.
Please remember to follow the rules of the forum and be informative and helpful. default smiley :-))

Reminder to all.

Please do not advertise sales or items wanted in this topic. I can turn a blind eye to the covers being offered (as long as they are not blatant advertisements) because we are, after all, trying to help each other progress and there is no filter on public covers for searching for crosses, but items sales and items wanted do not belong in any of the public forums and we have a sales forum for horse sales so please, lets keep our topic clean of the ads.

Thanks everyone

There are reasons for rules and everyone is expected to follow them. There will be no posting of advertisements in this topic and everyone is expected to be respectful. Any disrespect towards fellow players or moderators will not be tolerated. Anyone posting advertisements will receive a forum ban without prior warning. If breaking of rules continues to take place in this topic I will delete it.

Thank you

If anyone has personal issues with another player, or needs something back from another player(items/passes), other than covers/fills-please take it to private pms...anymore posting here will mean an instant forum ban without a warning.

A reminder that this is not the place for trading/buying/selling BMI, horses or advertising or asking for someone to train your horse.
If any of these things occur, you will be forum banned without prior warning.

If I want a good showjumping horse, what would be the best horses to cross? Also, what's the top GP for a cross breed? default smiley 8-)

I'm also making a mini-team (not an actual one) which will cross these breeds and hopefully they will be great showjumpers! default smiley xd

Please let me know what would be the best horses to cross-breed.

What would be the best two horses to cross breed for showjumping? I want them to be fast but agile and likely to win rosettes. default smiley :)

Would back-breeding be a good option too?

First decide what kind of comps or skills you want, then you can go from there. It's difficult to give suggestions without knowing what kind of skill development you would like.

I started a new project (Holsteiners!) and got her out of it! She's third for breed in dressage and I think she'll make it pretty high up the other breed rankings too default smiley :)

Your top breeds for show jumping would be sell francais , KWPN, and Hanoverian

I want to get into cross breeding to produce rosette winners, I don't care what event or specialty, what are good breeds to use ?
People need to read back. That same question has been asked quite a few times in the past couple pages, and has been answered.

If that was to medefault smiley (lol)
Thanks! I thought about Paso, but I'm worried I won't find many breed only comps for it. The few high skilled Pasos I have don't see many Paso western comps. Plenty for classical though.

I do like the skillset I'd end up with using a Hackney though, but for that breed I'm also worried my trot wouldn't be high enough to compete with the purebreds, though my stamina and dressage should be higher. Hmm...maybe I'll experiment with a couple different breeds.

Hey does anyone have suggestions for a cross that would have high dressage, really high gallop and high trot and not be too high in the other skills? I'm trying to breed something that I can cross with a knab down the line to get a really good dressage horse.
I was thinking maybe Lusitano X TB or a Friesian X PSH or even Welsh X Paso? thoughts or advice?
By Retired breeder, 3rd February 2016 00:29:58
The difficulty in making a dressage cross is that most breeds with a high gallop have a very low trot, and vice versa. So crossing those together gets you mediocre trot and gallop, which isn't what you want for dressage comps.
By Retired breeder, 3rd February 2016 00:39:19
delyth what would you recommend then? Just focusing on one of them? What kind of trot and gallop skills do I need to make rosette winners?
By Retired breeder, 3rd February 2016 00:43:23
Do WalkerXTB

I have had the best results with that honestly.
How about a three way between Walker, tb, and lusi? I think I might try that actually

You really won't get a rosette winner out of that combination. I don't think there is a good combo for a dressage rosette winner.

You can make a cross that will rack up a bunch of low level dressage comp wins, if you target train it the right way (ie, don't train dressage at all and max out trot and gallop, and then enter a ton of low level dressage comps.)
Accidentally got this girl in the sales, but I'm thinking I might use her.

If we're still on the topic of dressage compers -

A while ago, I already did a lot of spreadsheet calculations and I can honestly tell you that there is not one combination that I've found so far that would outdo a Lusi, in terms of rosette comping. (Just out of curiosity, I wanted to see if there was something other than a Lusi that would excel at dressage.) I tried all sorts of wacky combos and percentages to no avail; every time you try to boost 2 skills, the other goes down and vice versa. There just isn't a breed on here that has both gallop and trot as the two main skills and decent dressage, or any variation of those that won't be tanked when crossed with something else.

Just thought I'd put in my two cents before someone tries to go experiment.

well . . . you've still got dressage and gallop as the top two skills, but the problem is you've flattened out the other skills so they are now close to equal. In other words, too high a percentage of your available gp points are sunk into skills that have no use in dressage comps.

If that was directed at me: Oh, I know. I'm on my way, though I do wish that I could just take all the per skills and dump them into trot.

My next target is the Knabstrup. Will probably have to find a substitute. then, I will breed back to Lusitano.
