[Updated] Black Pearl Clarification

The Black Pearl

You need at least 150 days of seniority and 5 karma points to use the Black Pearl.

We'd like to clarify a few things concerning the proposals for the Creative Space. We've had the time to see how things went and made some changes along with some additional advice.

For the Horses, Pegasus, Unicorns, Donkeys, and Ponies.

Using shadows in your creations:

We are probably going to add them ourselves in the future to have something that has the right perspective on the backgrounds, and that has a uniform texture across the coats.

You can use shadowing, but we ask that you keep them very light so that the images will fit with most Helios Ray backgrounds.

Cut out your edges more.

When we place the coats on a dark background in a lot of cases, there are stray light colored pixels all around the drawing. This makes it impossible to use on a dark background.
Tip Please take the time to take a look at your coat on a white and on a black background, in order to get rid of any leftover smudges or pixels. Also, look a little further away on just the outline. Often the coats have a smudge around the corners or along the border of the image.

Use the smudge or blur tool sparingly.

It's a pity to see a coat that has been worked on then filtered with a blur filter, and it comes out all smudgy. It's also a pity to see a coat with smudge marks on one side and not the other.

Be careful when playing around with reformatting an image.

Sometimes we get perfectly nice drawings of Sausage horses because the file has been altered, and the horse has been squashed or pulled in another direction.
This might be a great way of transforming an Irish setter into a Teckel, but it isn't very pretty on horses. Also, avoid making your resolution too low and giving the picture a pixel art look

Backgrounds

Using brushes is allowed.

They can be used as well, but we'd like to also remind you of the Black Pearl page information as seen in the quote below.

“Excess airbrushing is not allowed”. It is allowed but not too much!"

We have received tons of entries like this and have been very cool about it up until now. However, seeing the same tree used 4 times in different backgrounds is starting to get a little old.

From here on out, we'll start to be a bit more strict about this type of thing. This is due to the fact that it's unfair and the aim of the Creative Space is to work things with your own hands, not make photo manipulations. The same thing goes for photos or bits of photos.

Painting, blurring or smudging landscape pictures.

Moving forward, we'll simply remove the right to propose any creations to the Creation space forever for those who do try to do this.

Check the perspectives.

When you make a background, please consider that there has to be something for the horse to put his feet on. It's quite strange the have a picture with a nice pond in the background and the horse is floating in the middle of it in thin air.

The same goes for outer space and clouds etc. Just try and make the backgrounds usable for everyone, not just the Pegasus. Also, make sure that the horses won't look like giants in the middle of a forest when you decide to draw trees or other items.

Rules

Plagiarism is forbidden!
Respect the author's rights: we do not steal images off of the Internet; we do not trace photos; we do not use the basis of someone else if they have not given their authorization, preferably publicly.

What is plagiarism? Plagiarism is taking someone else's work and passing them off as your own.

We can take inspiration from a style, a movement, a mane or a coat without copy-pasting it. It’s the same idea for literature, graphic arts, video games or cinema - there is often inspiration taken from another creation. Inspiration is imbued with another creation in order to interpret it and create something new! Copying is recreating identically. Copying is not having a style or a vision of your own. Try to have the imagination and bring your unique personality to your creations.

Please also note that any cheating can get you excluded from proposing any artwork to the Creative Space forever and/or be followed by sanctions.

Otherwise, all the usual rules still apply.

Before posting:

It is forbidden to mock or ridicule creations/creators
Don't post too many steps regarding your work to avoid flooding of the topic.
IT IS FORBIDDEN TO ASK FOR VOTES!

You are welcome to promote your creations or creations you voted for using #HowrseBP on social media or promote your creations on your profile page.

This topic can be used to help each other understand the Black Pearl rules with respect to your creative content.

Players who do not follow the rules are exposed to sanctions.

Regards
The Howrse team

Send two old (30+ y/o) horses to heaven, or save up the free "The loyal player's pass" passes, it's not 'that' difficult. If you really like to draw and want to enter the creation space 'competition', it is totally worth saving (at least) 2 passes.

As long as you stick to the rules you never lose. Your creation didn't get enough votes? No problem, you'll get those 2 passes back. Your creation has quality issues? No problem, you'll get your 2 passes back. Your creationd DID get enough votes? Congrats, you spent 2 passes but get 20 to 40 passes back for it. You will only lose your 2 passes if you try to cheat or shock (like stealing someone else's artwork, or sending in a photo, or if your creation is very inappropriate).

But, if you're not a big fan of drawing, and you are not planning on putting effort in your art than it is indeed not worth saving those two passes.

Meanwhile, when you are save some passes for the black pearl, you can work on your creations and practice to improve your art.

First you need a program to draw with. Free programs you can use are GIMP, Krita, Medibang Pro,(probably more I forgot to mention). I recommend testing them all and pick the one you like the best.

Now that you have chosen a program, create a canvas (work in bigger scale to be able to make it look smooth and nice once you shrink it down, the canvas should be at least 1000 x 1000px big to give good results.). Draw a coat. Please remember to read the rules before you start making one and if you don't understand something, ask questions. Posting WIPs for help and tips is a great way to learn.

When you are done, save your coat as PNG-file ( Golden apple coat= PNG so the background is transparent, the background needs to be saved as JPEG) and once Black pearl opens again (available at the very beginning of the new month for a few days) submit it.

1. Get an art tablet (I recommend wacom intuos)

2. Free program (I use FireAlpaca) default smiley (y)

You will always lose a tiny bit of the quality, because there is no way you can put the amount of details of a 1000 x 1000 px canvas into 300 x 300 pixels.

I just copy my original drawing, paste it in the template file, use CTRL+T (transform) to resize it (hold down Shift to make sure the proportions stay the same) make sure it fits the template / frame and when it does you can apply the transformation.
View your creation at 100% view in your program. If it's really blurry or pixely you do have a problem but usually it doesn't. Some details might be lost, or look a little bit different but again, you can't put 1000 x 1000 pixels (or even more) in 300 x 300 pixels without losing 'something'.
As soon as you go over the 100% zoom / view your creation will 'look' blurry, but it isn't, that's just because you zoom in on pixels.

Bimmerd: While the details may be lost (at least the smallest ones), the 1000 x 1000 or bigger canvas helps me keeping my coats sharp and nice even if I use smudge tool or blur tool default smiley :)

So, as someone whose english is not their mother language.. well I read the main post from Cailow a few times.. but still...
I know it's forbidden to ask for votes here, but can I show here what I'm sending in.?
It's also a bit confusing there's only a few pages... like... I though version as big as this would have their Creative Space thread more active.
Like.. on czech version we have two Creative space threads and they're, unlike here, active as hell. And czech version is almost half smaller (number of players). So I'm a bit confused.. Sorry >.<

So.. back to the subject: Is it also forbidden to just post there my creations or..ask for help.? Anything.? D: Because in the top post it just say it's only to explain the rules to others..

You can post images that you are still working on, to get tips and help from others. You cannot post a finished creation that you are entering into the creation space/already entered into the creation space, to ask for votes.

I have been tryin to upload my creation for some time yet receive a message that it is not in the right format. It is in a png formal with a transparent background (GA) and has the downloaded format frame without any pixels touching it. I am unsure what is still wrong.

I had the same problem. I double and triple checked my format and it wouldn't preview...

Does anyone know why this happened?

There might be a floating pixel somehwere in your canvas on top of the frame. It could be a 1% opacity pixel, but that still messes with the system.
Make sure to put your creation's layer under the frame layer. That usually solves the problem.

I like it! I'm sort of seeing a dragon, or skeleton. Or maybe a skeletal dragon default smiley xd Draw whatever your imaginations sees default smiley :)
I think this is agreat idea considering how many doubles of coats are put on when all they did was add wings or a horn to a already exsiting coat and all the original ones get left out

You mean the new changes? XD

Its not against the rules to send in a unicorn and pegasus version of your riding horse. It's actually good, because those are different categories for coats, not restrictions.

And one simply does not "just slap one a horn or wings" on a creation (at least its not possible to just slap it on and make it look good).

Why do you need 150 days of seniority and karma points to use the black pearl? And how do I get karma points? default smiley (o)default smiley :)

You can't get more karma points - you have 10 when you start and, as long as you stick to the rules, you won't lose any. As for the seniority required, that's how Howrse have set it. I'd guess it's so that you have a good knowledge of the game and an idea of what sort of things are acceptable and liked by players plus have shown your'e commited to the game before they let you start earning passes from image submissions.
