[Updated] Black Pearl Clarification

The Black Pearl

You need at least 150 days of seniority and 5 karma points to use the Black Pearl.

We'd like to clarify a few things concerning the proposals for the Creative Space. We've had the time to see how things went and made some changes along with some additional advice.

For the Horses, Pegasus, Unicorns, Donkeys, and Ponies.

Using shadows in your creations:

We are probably going to add them ourselves in the future to have something that has the right perspective on the backgrounds, and that has a uniform texture across the coats.

You can use shadowing, but we ask that you keep them very light so that the images will fit with most Helios Ray backgrounds.

Cut out your edges more.

When we place the coats on a dark background in a lot of cases, there are stray light colored pixels all around the drawing. This makes it impossible to use on a dark background.
Tip Please take the time to take a look at your coat on a white and on a black background, in order to get rid of any leftover smudges or pixels. Also, look a little further away on just the outline. Often the coats have a smudge around the corners or along the border of the image.

Use the smudge or blur tool sparingly.

It's a pity to see a coat that has been worked on then filtered with a blur filter, and it comes out all smudgy. It's also a pity to see a coat with smudge marks on one side and not the other.

Be careful when playing around with reformatting an image.

Sometimes we get perfectly nice drawings of Sausage horses because the file has been altered, and the horse has been squashed or pulled in another direction.
This might be a great way of transforming an Irish setter into a Teckel, but it isn't very pretty on horses. Also, avoid making your resolution too low and giving the picture a pixel art look

Backgrounds

Using brushes is allowed.

They can be used as well, but we'd like to also remind you of the Black Pearl page information as seen in the quote below.

“Excess airbrushing is not allowed”. It is allowed but not too much!"

We have received tons of entries like this and have been very cool about it up until now. However, seeing the same tree used 4 times in different backgrounds is starting to get a little old.

From here on out, we'll start to be a bit more strict about this type of thing. This is due to the fact that it's unfair and the aim of the Creative Space is to work things with your own hands, not make photo manipulations. The same thing goes for photos or bits of photos.

Painting, blurring or smudging landscape pictures.

Moving forward, we'll simply remove the right to propose any creations to the Creation space forever for those who do try to do this.

Check the perspectives.

When you make a background, please consider that there has to be something for the horse to put his feet on. It's quite strange the have a picture with a nice pond in the background and the horse is floating in the middle of it in thin air.

The same goes for outer space and clouds etc. Just try and make the backgrounds usable for everyone, not just the Pegasus. Also, make sure that the horses won't look like giants in the middle of a forest when you decide to draw trees or other items.

Rules

Plagiarism is forbidden!
Respect the author's rights: we do not steal images off of the Internet; we do not trace photos; we do not use the basis of someone else if they have not given their authorization, preferably publicly.

What is plagiarism? Plagiarism is taking someone else's work and passing them off as your own.

We can take inspiration from a style, a movement, a mane or a coat without copy-pasting it. It’s the same idea for literature, graphic arts, video games or cinema - there is often inspiration taken from another creation. Inspiration is imbued with another creation in order to interpret it and create something new! Copying is recreating identically. Copying is not having a style or a vision of your own. Try to have the imagination and bring your unique personality to your creations.

Please also note that any cheating can get you excluded from proposing any artwork to the Creative Space forever and/or be followed by sanctions.

Otherwise, all the usual rules still apply.

Before posting:

It is forbidden to mock or ridicule creations/creators
Don't post too many steps regarding your work to avoid flooding of the topic.
IT IS FORBIDDEN TO ASK FOR VOTES!

You are welcome to promote your creations or creations you voted for using #HowrseBP on social media or promote your creations on your profile page.

This topic can be used to help each other understand the Black Pearl rules with respect to your creative content.

Players who do not follow the rules are exposed to sanctions.

Hi!
How do I get a black pearl?

Like Shishi said, Black Pearls become available on the first of the month, however you must have at least 150 days of seniority and 5 karma points to get it (to prevent spam/scams/plagiarism, etc.). For new/low seniority players I usually recommend getting comfortable with GIMP (or your software of choice) and start working on a design! Five months (150 days) goes by really fast when you’ve got a project to occupy you. default smiley ;) Best of luck!

Having not gotten through a second time after I think doing about as much as I could to improve, I decided to try again with a colour that would show better than palomino. Uploading Red Rum on the 1st - anything I can do to make it better before that time? Upsettingly he looks much less crisp & contrast seems to have disappeard upon putting him on the template.

I think if you are going to call it Red Rum it should actually look like Red Rum. He had no white markings and a high head carriage (hence the trademark noseband). He wouldn't have been doing an exaggerated dressage trot either. He was a reddish bay. If you want to keep it as him I'd look at some pictures to get the colouring.

Might be better to change the name default smiley ;)

As to the picture... I do prefer it to the palomino. In spite of my comments, and problems with putting it on the template, I think you have the shading better. (Definitely better to change the name than mess too much with that!). I think the legs could do with some work, especially the left fore. I'm not sure if the hoof there would be weight bearing in that position? Might be good to check a few photos of trotting horses.

I appreciate your concern but I named him Red Rum more after my late grandpa who had the same initials & liked the horse purely for that. I didn't actually look at Red Rum for reference at all, and didn't realise just how famous he was (him having been around before my time). I might change it to Red Richard when it comes down to submitting it but will have to think about it.

As to the legs, I might reangle that hoof looking back, thank you for pointing that out - the reference I used most for the legs had that hoof in the sand so I mostly made it up.

Does anyone know how I can improve the quality? I've been using GIMP 2.0 but I can't see any settings as to retaining quality

What a lovely story: I think the name change would be perfect, and I hope your grandpa would agree!

Sorry, I'm not sure on the quality settings!

Hi everyone! I had a question on how to not lose quality when resizing. I use Medibang Paint Pro, and I can't seem to find anything to make sharper, even though the original was very clear.

Make sure your dpi/resolution for your coat/bg is at least 300. It helps with quality overall.
And you're always going to lose a bit of quality when scaling down, it's unavoidable. Try not to get too caught up with it when you're zoomed in. Stay zoomed out and see. ^^

Euphemia: I think you need to go back in and clean up his face a bit. Just to sharpen the details and make his features a little clearer. default smiley :d I know it's past submissions, but you can always resubmit if you have the time. XD

Thank you! I got it slightly clearer. It is my first time submitting a creation, so fingers crossed it will make it through!

A few things:

- You should be able to resolve the crispness issue by increasing your resolution while you scale down.

- I really love the color! It's a fantastic base, although adding in some more colors to the shading will go a long way in making the coat pop even when it's scaled down. (Googling "shade [color] with" can give you ideas for this!)

- When you're working on the coat, make sure you zoom out regularly. I suspect part of the quality loss is coming from shading that looks good up close, but winds up fuzzy farther away. Bolder/smoother lines/highlights may look like waaaay too much when you're zoomed in regularly, but they almost always translate well to a smaller size.

- As for the awkward leg, a quick Google Image search for horses trotting should help. Looks like a horse in that part of the trot would not be bearing weight on the leg, but would instead be curved slightly.

A few images that should illustrate what I mean under the spoilers. default smiley :)

When in doubt: reference!

I can't remember where Ow said it, but halters are a bit of a gray area. It's better to play it safe and either do a decorative piece or just forgo the halter altogether & save yourself some trouble.

Hey, everyone! I just had a question about the Black Pearl. Is it only available on the first of every month? Or more frequently than that.

Hello!
I started drawing and I'v finished some horses. I'd love to hear your opinionsdefault smiley ;)
1. This one is an Indian pegasus, it's probably going to be called DreamCatcher.

2. I've always loved butterflies. And that's how this idea was born:

3. Finally, I did one without a lineart- it's not quite finished yet, I'm thinking about adding something to the mane.

These are mostly finished- final corrections such as edges, making-tips-of-the-mane-pointy, etc. will be done when I'll put them in frames.

I will be submitting a few coats as well for the next month, it still needs a bit of work but i would like your opinion guys on the brightness of the coat, like on light backgrounds i see it a bit too dark but on darker ones it looks beautiful and not so dark as i see it. (I just don't know if i should make it a bit more lighter or leave it as it is)

And here's a screenshot of how it looks on darker backgrounds.(this is a Helios background and is not mine).

I find it really nicely shaded.Light grey/ white horses are not easy to shade, and definitely not easy to make them look good even when you have lineart.I see nice sharp and soft shadows, kind of reminds me of cell shading style... keep it up! Would love to use it on some of my horses default smiley :d Well done! default smiley (y)

Only advise I can give is to add more shades of this colour,or play around and use darker shadows with some other color (like blue, dark yellow mm). It will give more variety as well as depth.
