[Updated] Black Pearl Clarification

The Black Pearl

You need at least 150 days of seniority and 5 karma points to use the Black Pearl.

We'd like to clarify a few things concerning the proposals for the Creative Space. We've had the time to see how things went and made some changes along with some additional advice.

For the Horses, Pegasus, Unicorns, Donkeys, and Ponies.

Using shadows in your creations:

We are probably going to add them ourselves in the future to have something that has the right perspective on the backgrounds, and that has a uniform texture across the coats.

You can use shadowing, but we ask that you keep them very light so that the images will fit with most Helios Ray backgrounds.

Cut out your edges more.

When we place the coats on a dark background in a lot of cases, there are stray light colored pixels all around the drawing. This makes it impossible to use on a dark background.
Tip Please take the time to take a look at your coat on a white and on a black background, in order to get rid of any leftover smudges or pixels. Also, look a little further away on just the outline. Often the coats have a smudge around the corners or along the border of the image.

Use the smudge or blur tool sparingly.

It's a pity to see a coat that has been worked on then filtered with a blur filter, and it comes out all smudgy. It's also a pity to see a coat with smudge marks on one side and not the other.

Be careful when playing around with reformatting an image.

Sometimes we get perfectly nice drawings of Sausage horses because the file has been altered, and the horse has been squashed or pulled in another direction.
This might be a great way of transforming an Irish setter into a Teckel, but it isn't very pretty on horses. Also, avoid making your resolution too low and giving the picture a pixel art look

Backgrounds

Using brushes is allowed.

They can be used as well, but we'd like to also remind you of the Black Pearl page information as seen in the quote below.

“Excess airbrushing is not allowed”. It is allowed but not too much!"

We have received tons of entries like this and have been very cool about it up until now. However, seeing the same tree used 4 times in different backgrounds is starting to get a little old.

From here on out, we'll start to be a bit more strict about this type of thing. This is due to the fact that it's unfair and the aim of the Creative Space is to work things with your own hands, not make photo manipulations. The same thing goes for photos or bits of photos.

Painting, blurring or smudging landscape pictures.

Moving forward, we'll simply remove the right to propose any creations to the Creation space forever for those who do try to do this.

Check the perspectives.

When you make a background, please consider that there has to be something for the horse to put his feet on. It's quite strange the have a picture with a nice pond in the background and the horse is floating in the middle of it in thin air.

The same goes for outer space and clouds etc. Just try and make the backgrounds usable for everyone, not just the Pegasus. Also, make sure that the horses won't look like giants in the middle of a forest when you decide to draw trees or other items.

Rules

Plagiarism is forbidden!
Respect the author's rights: we do not steal images off of the Internet; we do not trace photos; we do not use the basis of someone else if they have not given their authorization, preferably publicly.

What is plagiarism? Plagiarism is taking someone else's work and passing them off as your own.

We can take inspiration from a style, a movement, a mane or a coat without copy-pasting it. It’s the same idea for literature, graphic arts, video games or cinema - there is often inspiration taken from another creation. Inspiration is imbued with another creation in order to interpret it and create something new! Copying is recreating identically. Copying is not having a style or a vision of your own. Try to have the imagination and bring your unique personality to your creations.

Please also note that any cheating can get you excluded from proposing any artwork to the Creative Space forever and/or be followed by sanctions.

Otherwise, all the usual rules still apply.

Before posting:

It is forbidden to mock or ridicule creations/creators
Don't post too many steps regarding your work to avoid flooding of the topic.
IT IS FORBIDDEN TO ASK FOR VOTES!

You are welcome to promote your creations or creations you voted for using #HowrseBP on social media or promote your creations on your profile page.

This topic can be used to help each other understand the Black Pearl rules with respect to your creative content.

@BLΛƆKPIИK:
My favorites are the last one and the brown pony with pink manes (such a cutie). I also really like the black/green space one, but as Shishi no Seirei said, it will look even better if you do some little touch ups. There are a little bit of black pixels left in the tail and manes, I guess from either your base coat or the line art. So you might want to take a look at those.
Also, that little unicorn is so cute. I always love it when I see GA coats with a cartoon like style, since they are quite rare.

Agree with Shishi: you need more shading. Especially some of the noses and legs are just flat colour at the moment.

I think it's a real shame that so many people on here don't seem to do anything with the eyes! Some colour (usually dark brown for a horse of course!) and glint of white to make the eye look shiny can make a massive difference.

Don't forget to zoom in and go round with the eraser: I can see a few points you've gone over the lines.

Also try them against both white and black backgrounds to check you've not left any gaps.

Good luck!

Yeah I know, I've not finished erasing the background which is why it's not fully touched up yet and still have parts of the background colour. They're all being testes on both colour backgrounds as I go (:

I don't like dark eyes on horses tbh. All the horses I've loaned or ridden have all had beautiful blue eyes and so I've grown quite fond of them. That's why my GAs all have blue or green (In case of the unicorn) as opposed to brown (: I'm still working on the eyes, ears and noses though. I'm not trying to make very realistic coats as I'm not so fond of them but I wanted some shading and some level of realism in them. It's hard to describe what I was going for default smiley xd

Out of the ones posted the starry one is the only one I'm still doing major work with which is why the shading isn't complete and the background and colour not touched up. The other are just minor touchups left once I get the time. I've still got 20 odd days before I have the seniority to enter them so I'll have many days for fixing the little things.

Thanks for the feedback. I've completed the unicorn so that's 1 out of 4 that I'm happy with default smiley xd Now to fix the other 3 default smiley :p

Hi everyone! I submitted my third creation back in November and sadly, this one did not make it through.

Unfortunately I did not have time to work on it in time for December, so the current plan is to resubmit for January.

Does anyone have tips? Especially regarding how to blend shading in a painterly manner in Photoshop. I drew this with a wacom intuos, but just got a huion kamvas so hopefully being able to see it on a screen will hope immensely!

I was going to post a link to a tutorial someone posted a while back... but when I looked you posted it!default smiley (h)

I really like it. Maybe some more contrast to bring out the white chest etc? But I'm telling myself you have to take voting with a pinch of salt (especially since I haven't got any through!)

I have a possibly stupid question, but why do people make limited coats?

The rules say, that the creator gets 4000 Passes for an unlimited and 2000 Passes for a limited coat. So why would they make their coats limited if they get only half the passes for it?

Hi, I would like to ask you some opinions on this work (I'm from Italian server and this forum no longer exists :/ )
It represents the city of Milan with the cathedral on the back and the effeminate style (Milan is the city of the fashion!)
What do you think about it? (Sorry for my english XD)
Thank you ^^

Some people like the idea of their coats becoming rare one day,and be part of the rare-collection some years from now. Technically, if you get in a coat with 100 uses it wont be worth more than 1 pass the day it comes out (in the BMI store), MAY be worth 10 passes on the horse sales market (depending how much people like it).

And let's say 10 years go by (Howrse is still alive), and the coats use goes from 100 to 5.

NOW your creation is on the most wanted list and probably worth 30-40 passes on horse sales-market default smiley :p

That is only if your coat becomes retired. Its not easy to make the rare this days. It could take years for your coat to become rare, and if all copies are not picked up, it will stay as a not fully-used "normal" golden apple coat.

Of course... it is a big leap of faith to make limited coats. Who knows maybe someone would come up with the idea to shove said limited rare coats into Christmas packs to make them more attractive to collectors...default smiley (8) And no,the creator wouldnt be able to protest against it because as soon the coat gets trough voting and becomes a official coat on Howrse,it becomes Howrses property. They could do whatever they want with it.

Hi! I'm hoping to propose an illustration for the black pearl for the first time, but I'm having issues with uploading my artwork. When I try to preview on the black pearl, it says my image is not in the compulsory format, but when I pull up my image in GIMP the background in the square where the horse is is transparent and I cannot find any issues. Can anyone think of any reasons I cannot upload?
Thanks in advance!

If you would like to send it over to me, I can see I can find anything wrong with it. The BP can be finicky sometimes.

@Strewburry Rabbit! They are very pretty and nice looking, however due to the nature of them the horse would sort of be floating in midair, making it really only suitable for winged horses as best. However it's just my opinion, you are free to submit them as you wish. default smiley :)
