[Updated] Black Pearl Clarification

The Black Pearl

You need at least 150 days of seniority and 5 karma points to use the Black Pearl.

We'd like to clarify a few things concerning the proposals for the Creative Space. We've had the time to see how things went and made some changes along with some additional advice.

For the Horses, Pegasus, Unicorns, Donkeys, and Ponies.

Using shadows in your creations:

We are probably going to add them ourselves in the future to have something that has the right perspective on the backgrounds, and that has a uniform texture across the coats.

You can use shadowing, but we ask that you keep them very light so that the images will fit with most Helios Ray backgrounds.

Cut out your edges more.

When we place the coats on a dark background in a lot of cases, there are stray light colored pixels all around the drawing. This makes it impossible to use on a dark background.
Tip Please take the time to take a look at your coat on a white and on a black background, in order to get rid of any leftover smudges or pixels. Also, look a little further away on just the outline. Often the coats have a smudge around the corners or along the border of the image.

Use the smudge or blur tool sparingly.

It's a pity to see a coat that has been worked on then filtered with a blur filter, and it comes out all smudgy. It's also a pity to see a coat with smudge marks on one side and not the other.

Be careful when playing around with reformatting an image.

Sometimes we get perfectly nice drawings of Sausage horses because the file has been altered, and the horse has been squashed or pulled in another direction.
This might be a great way of transforming an Irish setter into a Teckel, but it isn't very pretty on horses. Also, avoid making your resolution too low and giving the picture a pixel art look

Backgrounds

Using brushes is allowed.

They can be used as well, but we'd like to also remind you of the Black Pearl page information as seen in the quote below.

“Excess airbrushing is not allowed”. It is allowed but not too much!"

We have received tons of entries like this and have been very cool about it up until now. However, seeing the same tree used 4 times in different backgrounds is starting to get a little old.

From here on out, we'll start to be a bit more strict about this type of thing. This is due to the fact that it's unfair and the aim of the Creative Space is to work things with your own hands, not make photo manipulations. The same thing goes for photos or bits of photos.

Painting, blurring or smudging landscape pictures.

Moving forward, we'll simply remove the right to propose any creations to the Creation space forever for those who do try to do this.

Check the perspectives.

When you make a background, please consider that there has to be something for the horse to put his feet on. It's quite strange the have a picture with a nice pond in the background and the horse is floating in the middle of it in thin air.

The same goes for outer space and clouds etc. Just try and make the backgrounds usable for everyone, not just the Pegasus. Also, make sure that the horses won't look like giants in the middle of a forest when you decide to draw trees or other items.

Rules

Plagiarism is forbidden!
Respect the author's rights: we do not steal images off of the Internet; we do not trace photos; we do not use the basis of someone else if they have not given their authorization, preferably publicly.

What is plagiarism? Plagiarism is taking someone else's work and passing them off as your own.

We can take inspiration from a style, a movement, a mane or a coat without copy-pasting it. It’s the same idea for literature, graphic arts, video games or cinema - there is often inspiration taken from another creation. Inspiration is imbued with another creation in order to interpret it and create something new! Copying is recreating identically. Copying is not having a style or a vision of your own. Try to have the imagination and bring your unique personality to your creations.

Please also note that any cheating can get you excluded from proposing any artwork to the Creative Space forever and/or be followed by sanctions.

Otherwise, all the usual rules still apply.

Before posting:

It is forbidden to mock or ridicule creations/creators
Don't post too many steps regarding your work to avoid flooding of the topic.
IT IS FORBIDDEN TO ASK FOR VOTES!

You are welcome to promote your creations or creations you voted for using #HowrseBP on social media or promote your creations on your profile page.

This topic can be used to help each other understand the Black Pearl rules with respect to your creative content.

Players who do not follow the rules are exposed to sanctions.

Regards
The Howrse team

And I'm questioning whether it would be okay to send in or not? The lineart was someone else's, and knowing me I read their rules thoroughly to know howrse is included in the free license (I could double-check) but is it okay to pull the coat colors from an image like this?

In theory you can, but some players get bored with "another coat from Daschenka's lines". So many people use them, that it's like seeing a clone in the voting.
The reference photo she used is no longer available on Tumlr, so I cannot check if it's author gave permission to use it for Howrse. I doubt she would use it without checking the licence though.

Please remember that this topic is for getting help with work in progress or with how the BP works etc and players are not allowed to post work already submitted as that's effectively advertising it before voting starts. As per the original post, there are plenty of other ways to get your work seen default smiley :)

Oof my bad, I just thought it meant you couldn't ask people for votes, sorry

I don't think there's any problem with taking the colours from the picture: it's using a reference, not copying the picture. What you've ended up with is not an image of the horse shown (different markings for one thing). Or a copy of the picture (different position).

As for lineart: it's allowed! Sometimes part of me wishes it wasn't, since it does mean it's not all your work. On the other hand doing a really good job of the colouring does show artistry, so mixed feelings! I like the way this one is coloured!

Thanks, Rowan! I'm definitely considering putting some finishing touches on that one and throwing it in.

Last update, I have to finish the sand and make up the trees on the right and send. Time is almost over. ;-; Just like my motivation.

is it going to be a donkey? It reminds me my old unicorn coat I don't send anymore. Friends were calling it a "torchhooved" default smiley xd

Can someone please answer a question for me? My creation had a transparent background. However, now that I am looking at it in creation space its white? I don't understand? I made sure it was transparent. How can I make sure this doesn't happen again?

Thanks guys, I just saw a few decent donkey drawings. Unfortunately two of them were on the same voting slip. I hate it when that happens.default smiley :(

I have never had this issue, so I have no idea what might have caused that. Say how did you make sure it was transparent. Are you sure it's .png, never opened in MS Paint and saved, template is fine (not broken)?
Do you send any other coats? If so, check them too. If they are fine, use the same template they have. I have the frame saved with empty content as a Gimp file and whenever I need to put a new coat in it, I add it on a seperate layer and export to .png. That makes all my coats have the very same, working frame.

not sure if this is the right place to post this or not, but ive come across a couple creations during voting that honestly just look like theyre cut out directly from images?

ive googled for a bit to see if i could find the original, but nothing came up: the thing here is tho that the cut of the tails etc look a lot like they've just been cut straight out of a photo... what's the thing to do here? let howrse find them themself n make that decision to take em out or do nothing?

There is a button to report them. When I've done it I've not heard anything back, but maybe they only bother with those reports if a creation gets through the voting?

Just report them (breaks CS rules option). They come back in to CS every month or so. And no,you dont hear back from the team or anyone else when you report coats.

I actually had a coat on one of my horses that was removed from the game! So I know they eventually act on it, they just don't always do so immediately. The people who purchase it get their GAs refunded. default smiley :)

I want to say that howrse also goes through all of the creations that get through voting before they get put on the game. So even if a photo does get through, it's kicked out before it's available as a GA.

Does anyone else feel like they are banging their head against a brick wall by reporting these things? I have reported that 'wolf' picture a dozen times and yet they still keep putting it back in.default smiley :@

I would suspect they only go through and check in detail those that pass voting. It would be a lot of time and effort for them to check all of them. So it probably is worth reporting, so the report is there if it gets to that stage.

I'm pretty sure this is how it works. I was reporting artwork taken from another horse-breeding game and it was submitted again for at least few months.

censurer This message has been censored since it does not follow the forum rules.
Please don't post coats that are up for voting at the moment. This topic is meant to be somewhere that people wanting to submit a coat or background can get some help and advice and was closed once before because it got filled up with people posting images that either they wanted votes for or those of others which they they wanted to comment on. I expect all of us see coats that we love or find odd or not to our taste but this isn't the place for them I'm afraid default smiley :) You can use your own EC forums if you want to chat about coats up for voting.

Sorry, I thought it was ok if you suspected cheating, which I did...

If you suspect cheating - then use the report button - don't name/shame players in the forums, or mock/ridicule other players creations, as the main forum topic states.

I enter a golden apple creation this month and have not seen her throughout the entire voting time. What does this mean? I submitted of a golden palomino arab with her head lowered and looking up at you. My 4 kids that play howrse too, have not seen her either. All of my other creations have been popping up for voting just fine.

Thank you for any help you can give concerning this question.
