[Info] Cross breeders

Finally a post just for us cross breeders. The purpose of this topic is for cross breeders to have a place to discuss their crossbreeding programs and to share crossbreeding secrets and advice with others who may be interested in giving crossbreeding a try. Feel free to talk about your crossbreeding programs and your achievements and failures in crossbreeding.
Please remember to follow the rules of the forum and be informative and helpful. default smiley :-))

Reminder to all.

Please do not advertise sales or items wanted in this topic. I can turn a blind eye to the covers being offered (as long as they are not blatant advertisements) because we are, after all, trying to help each other progress and there is no filter on public covers for searching for crosses, but items sales and items wanted do not belong in any of the public forums and we have a sales forum for horse sales so please, lets keep our topic clean of the ads.

Thanks everyone

Haven’t been here in ages, returning player and crossbreeder here to say hi again, and to show some of my favourite crosses/give advice default smiley :)

- old TB showjumping rossette winner: https://www.howrse.com/elevage/fiche/?id=45483829

- current #1 KWPN stamina: https://www.howrse.com/elevage/fiche/?id=69195016

My next skiller will be a TB/criollo cross, for gallop comps.
as for something I recommend - KWPN/vanner, does wonderfully in cross country.

I've got some really nice GP foals that I've bought and since I wasn't paying attention a few are crosses. (I orginally wanted then purebred so I could figure out what breeds crossed well with what)

Anyways, the breeds are as follows:
Lusitano/Vanner
Selle Françias/Thouroughbred
Quarter Horse/Tennessee Walker
Paint/Thouroughbred/Vanner
Argentinean Criollo/Shetland
Barb/KWPN/Thouroughbred/A. Criollo
Brumby/Fresian/Thouroughbred/K. Bog/Shetland

Again they very nice GPs, so i'm keeping them, seeing how well they do in comps, and hopefully find which mix is the right one and start breeding some nice mixes.

They're all foals right now, but I'll keep ya updated in how they do/what they do well in

Hello! I was on this game a while ago and used to have several horses on the leaderboards for crosses. I want to get back into it with hackney crosses! I'm wondering if anyone has some kind of stud cross with high gp and pretty good stamina that could cover one of my hackney mares? Or if anyone has suggestions for breeds that would cross well that would place me at the top of the hackney boards and keep the stamina high?

Hey all, haven't been on in a long long time too. Not really interested in doing heavy duty breeding but with all the changes I had a question about crossbreeding.

In a 4 way cross what is the breed the horse should turn into?

I think it was the sire of the sire in a cross way.

So for example you have 2 crosses, the stallion is Arab stallion and morgan mare

the mare is a vanner stallion and friesian mare.

Which one should the game hopefully if all other factors are equal have the foal come out as?

The breed the foal would come out would depend on the scenario.

I'm not quite sure what you're asking, but I'm going to just cover all grounds here and hopefully answer the question.

What I think you're asking is if horse A is a cross (Arab/Morgan cross) and horse B is a cross (Vanner/Freisan cross) and they breed what would the foal be?

*please correct me if i'm wrong and i'll answer any remaining questions*

So if Horse A has parents that are a purebred Arab stallion and a purebred Morgan mare; horse A would be 50/50 Arab/Morgan cross and would take after the sire's breed making it an Arab.

If Horse B has parents that are a purebred Vanner stallion and a purebred Fresian mare; horse B would be a 50/50 Vanner/Fresian cross and would also take after the sire's breed making it a Vanner.

If Horse A is a stallion and Horse B is a mare and you breed them together you would get a 4 breed cross of this:
25% Arab
25% Morgan
25% Vanner
25% Fresian

Because it is an even split and the foal is not more of one breed then the other it would take the sire's (Horse A) dominant breed making it an Arab.

I thought that a 4-way cross was dependent on the order of breeds that the sire has? Or has that been changed?

So, borrowing your example, Horse A is a 50/50 Arab/Morgan cross and would take the sire's breed, in this case making it an Arab. The breeds on the page are listed like so:
50% Morgan
50% Arab

Horse B is a 50/50 Vanner/Friesian cross that's dominant Vanner because the sire was a Vanner. This horse's breeds are listed as:
50% Vanner
50% Friesian

If Horse A is a stallion and Horse B is a mare and you breed them together, the foal's dominant breed would be listed as Arab because on it's sire's page, Arab is listed last. If Morgan was listed last, then the foal would be a Morgan dominant 4-way cross. I thought it worked that way because 50/50 crosses don't always have their dominant breed listed first in the breed listing. Here are two 50/50 twins that have their breeds listed in the opposite order from each other:
Sappho: https://www.howrse.com/elevage/fiche/?id=69007640
Seneca: https://www.howrse.com/elevage/fiche/?id=69007641
And here's the horse I bred from Seneca because I wanted a Quarter Pony dominant 4-way cross and his breeds were listed in the correct order.
Julia Balbilla: https://www.howrse.com/elevage/fiche/?id=69083614

Does anyone know if 4-way crosses still follow this rule or am I incorrect?

okay I'm going to try it and see what works. I want a 4 way cross but I want arab to be the breed it comes out as. Just been hankering for an old line of mine to have a new horse of it.

@CrimsonDax

I'm sort of a new player or at least wasn't on when howrse was doing that.

Now the order of the breeds don't dictate what breed the foal is. Though I have no idea why the twins' breeds are flipflopped.

However, the foal, Julia Balbilla is a Quarter Pony instead of Vanner, Mustang, or Thoroughbred because in a even split cross (a cross where the horse in question isn't more of one breed then another) the horse would take the sire's breed this case being Quarter Pony.

Hope this helps!

I went back and looked at some of my old crosses and mirrored them. I wanted arab 4 way crosses and when I did the breedings it turned out the grandmother on the sire's side is what determined the breed of foal.

That could just be for my crosses and someone else might be different but that is what I got. And got some really nice crosses out of it too. Working on getting my EC up now so I can skill it out properly.

Hello fellow crossbreeders!

I just wanted to give a shout and let you guys know I have some great resources available on my profile page (click on my player name to jump there), including a studbook of crossbred studs available for public or even private cover requests, and a link to my EC forum where I have some great threads for you.

I'm most proud of my [◆] How-to: Requesting covers from teams thread and another, which is a big work in progress, called Crossbreeding Directory: Teams that Provide Covers.

I'd love to see more than just Thoroughbred crosses out there, and hope these sort of resources will help make that possible. I know it's tough without more complex breed filtering systems available, so I get it. I sell a wide variety of crossbreeds, but enjoy shopping around and supporting other crossbreeders too. Please feel free to send me a message and/or friend request. I'd love to link up!

Thanks! default smiley (l)

I suddenly realized Tennessee Walkers and Icelandic Horses have a similar skillset, so I created Sakura with my Tennessee mare and an Icelandic stud.

Any opinions? I think she's cute. default smiley :d

Looking for a player!

No idea on the username; we aren't friends. This player has congratulated me before so I've seen their profile. Want to get in touch with them but I need some help!

Details about them: They are a hardcore crossbreeder. Their presentation lists well over 20 of their crosses with details, GP highs, and links to affixes. The layout is custom and has photos of horses on it I believe.

I'm not sure how helpful those details are lol but if anyone knows this breeder and could send me their user I'd greatly appreciate it default smiley ^)

I'm working up a new purebred Arabian and going to ask for some team covers on her, including a Morgan cover! So, I should have another, more up-to-date Morab popped out soon. Want me to message you when a new Morab is ready?

Here are my plans for the Arabian:

Nokota team cover = North Dakota Badlands Horse
QH private cover = Quarab
Morgan team cover = Morab
Mustang team cover = Abstang

Annnnd, I'm working up a new purebred QH and going to ask for some team covers on her, as well. If you're interested in an Appendix QH (TB x QH), I'd be happy to grab a public TB cover on her, but am otherwise not going to bother.

Here are my current plans for the QH:

Nokota team cover = North Dakota Badlands Horse
Arabian private cover = Quarab
Morgan team cover = ? (just using it to cross into my Blazer Horse project)
Mustang team cover = ? (just using it to cross into my Blazer Horse project)

Do you mean for your affix?

I get the inspiration for most of my crosses on Howrse after real world crossbreeds. I did a lot of homework on real world crossbreeds to see what combinations might be possible to replicate on Howrse. Some of my combinations don't quite fit the real world crossbreed, but are fun to model them after anyways.

For example, in the real world, a "Pintabian" is a horse with over 99% Arabian blood and tobiano markings. Tobiano is a dominant spotting pattern, but to produce this type of horse, at least one parent must be a tobiano. Pintabians were developed by continually crossing tobianos back to purebred Arabians until a relatively pure strain of spotted horses with nearly 100% Arabian blood was obtained.

However, my Howrse Pintabian breeding program requires >50% Paint for colored coat options, preferably tobiano but I've allowed all Paint coats into my affix. The other parent breed may be Arabian and/or Shagya Arabian. The name Roots was given because these should be thought of as foundation horses of the real life crossbreed. default smiley 8-)default smiley (y)

I breed Legacy Friesian Warmbloods which are based on the Australian Friesian Warmblood. Both the real life horse and the Howrse horse excel at cross country. The only thing that is different is that the real life one only needs 25% Friesian and then any other breed. Mine is 50/50 Friesian KWPN with the Friesian being dominant.

I currently have 2 in the top 100 cross country winnings rankings and am currently raising up a 3rd one.

Hi everyone! I used to play under the name SnapDragon for several years from 2012 to 2017. I had to stop playing for a while and when I tried to log in again my account had been deleted. I used to cross breed a lot and many of them were Rosette winners and among the top horses in the Grand Prix. I'm back now, changed my name and starting up cross breeding again because I just can't help myself!!! This game is very addicting!!! I am trying to get a cross right now that would be excellent in trail comps and Grand Prix. I have a cross right now that does very well in low level comps because her dressage isn't high enough for the Rosettes. The mare I used is a Selle and the stud is a Paso. I tried a 3 way cross breeding that horse to a Lusitano. The dressage is better but the trot and jumping dropped really low.

Has anyone done a cross that has high enough numbers all the way around to win Rosette comps and be in the top horses to score high in the Trail Grand Prix? I'm not looking for top horse because the Nokota is top, but close would be nice! At least high enough to access the fountain.

Quick question.
Do crossbreeds get better skills overall than a purebred who mainly focus on 3?

The formula for GP calculation is the same for crossbreds and purebreds.

You can breed a cross who has even skills across the board, but due to skill distribution, it will actually tend have lower individual skills compared to a horse with a similar total skill amount who's specialized in fewer skills.

These two are the only example I could find at the moment, but Jamie has a fairly even genetic skill distribution, besides from dressage, which is higher than the rest. His overall GP is 6589.

Sunburst's GP is actually lower than Jamie's at 6249, but he's much higher in the same stamina and gallop skill set than Jamie, because I bred him to specialize in reining.
