[Info] Cross breeders

Finally a post just for us cross breeders. The purpose of this topic is for cross breeders to have a place to discuss their crossbreeding programs and to share crossbreeding secrets and advice with others who may be interested in giving crossbreeding a try. Feel free to talk about your crossbreeding programs and your achievements and failures in crossbreeding.
Please remember to follow the rules of the forum and be informative and helpful. default smiley :-))

Reminder to all.

Please do not advertise sales or items wanted in this topic. I can turn a blind eye to the covers being offered (as long as they are not blatant advertisements) because we are, after all, trying to help each other progress and there is no filter on public covers for searching for crosses, but items sales and items wanted do not belong in any of the public forums and we have a sales forum for horse sales so please, lets keep our topic clean of the ads.

Thanks everyone

There are reasons for rules and everyone is expected to follow them. There will be no posting of advertisements in this topic and everyone is expected to be respectful. If breaking of rules continues to take place in this topic I will delete it.

If anyone has personal issues with another player, or needs something back from another player(items/passes), other than covers/fills-please take it to private pms...anymore posting here will mean an instant forum ban without a warning.

A reminder that this is not the place for trading/buying/selling BMI, horses or advertising or asking for someone to train your horse.
If any of these things occur, you will be forum banned without prior warning.

I'm excited to see what I end up doing with mine!!! I've got 2 fillies and then a sales-bought colt so far - just gotta find out how to blup them and then I can start looking at crosses!

Question - does anyone have any favorite vanner or pony breed crosses?
Vanner x Arab is fun for me.

Hey guys... been a long time since i've been here! Can't remember 100%, but is it right that if you breed two 50/50 crosses the foal will take the second listed breed of the mare? (Regarding all breeds being different..) Thanks in advance!

Usually stallion or highest percentage of one breed.

I mean two equal 50/50 crosses... so both mare & stallion are 50/50. For instance;

Mare:
50% Akhal-Teke
50% Selle Francais

Stallion:
50% Gypsy Vanner
50% Arabian Horse

Would the foal be a Selle Francais?

I'm pretty sure it would, yeah

It’s generally the second listed breed of the stallion.

So after an extremely long hiatus here are my most recent mixes...

'Mocktail' Selle x Akhal Teke

Sort of just bred her to get back into things.. does okay in XC comps but not crazy. Currently #2 in Akhal skills.

And my favourite cutie after...

'Mania' Shetland x Selle

I usually stay away from breeding sh*tlands... they're not always my favourite, however this stallion turned out pretty well, tomorrow he should be #1 in Shetland skills and has just won me a rosette. Going to get him to 100 BLUP soon so if anyone's interested in a covering let me know default smiley ;)

Lovely crosses! I do like my selle crosses myself - lovely gp and skill boost!

Recently I've tried a Friesian/TB and A Frieab, which I'm loving for reining - go with Arab to get lower gallop if you'd like easier comps. My Friesian/TB got all his wins by 6 and a half, which is a new record! I've discovered my least favorite part of blupping is waiting for comps to run lol

First off sorry I can't link the horse I always mess it up but.... On my Alchemy tab the horse is Dream Walker.

She's one of the quirkier horses I've ever breed. I have been trying to develop horses that are really good for cross country and/or show jumping and she'd probably be good for that but her skills are such that I think she might should be pointed at something else but I'm not sure what, especially if it is a Western comp so oppinons are welcome. AKA... help please.

I've got a funny cross. The dam was 50/50 and sire was 50/a few other breeds. The foal took the mother's listed breed. default smiley (lol) I haven't had that happen before.

Make sure to do your research before you start crossing if you want to end up with specific skill sets and not ones that are harder to blup (skill sets that correspond with only one type of ride like stamina, speed, and trot). If you're looking to know what gp you'll get, you can calculate it by adding stats from the mare and the stallion you're breeding and dividing by 2. Most of crossbreeding is just seeing what works and messing around a little default smiley (lol)! I'd also recommend looking around in the blupping help forum and asking for schedules for certain skill sets so that you know how to blup your horse the most effective way.

My personal favorites are the crosses that give me horses with unlikely skill sets for their dominant breed, like Standardbred/QH that comes out with a standardbred that has qh skill set. I'm also liking my Friesian/TB and Friesian/Arab crosses at the moment.

Thank you, Bandito15, for you advice!

I decided to do a Selle/Welsh cross, just because I breed Selles so I already had a fully BLUPed mare. I'm really happy with her! I can't wait to try another cross.

(Hopefully the link works)

Selle×KWPN is a popular one - basically if you pick two same-skill set breeds that you can get high gp for, you're set!

I've had a few over the years, some quite surprising i feel (PS they're from a while ago so their skill set is quite low!)

Akhal Teke x Arabian
I bred quite a few of these and they all gave me rosettes, was my favourite cross for a while!

Akhal Teke x Selle

Knabstrupper x Lusitano

KWPN x Selle x Morgan x Hano
Took all the top jumping breeds and made a power horse default smiley (y) Again had a few of these get me rosettes!

And of course my most recent;

Shetland x Selle
Currently has me at 26 rosettes which is the most i've every had from a horse... small & mighty!

Hope this gives you some inspo!

Pretty much anything x KWPN, Selle, Arabian, GV, etc. I had a Haflinger dominant rosette winner, for instance.

Pick either a breed you like and want to “improve” by crossing with a breed that excels in an area the other breed is weak in or pick a competition type and try to breed a horse that excels in the three required skills or maybe try breeding a horse predominantly of a breed that doesn’t usuallly excel in that competetition type. It really depends on your interests and tastes and the possibilities are endless.

@I4Horses

Just checking out your links and I'm definitely also going to do the Akhal-Teke x Arabian one, as well as the Knabstrupper x Lusitano one! They look awesome. default smiley :d

Thanks for the idea!

Here's the link: Dream Walker.

Given that her top skills are stamina, speed and dressage, she's a good fit for cutting comps. If you're quick you can still change her speciality to Western riding and maybe win a few good competitions!

She's also definitely a good starting point for show-jumping or cross-country! If you also train her jumping skill you'd be good on both. However, since her best skill is stamina, I think you should focus either on cross-country comps or on cutting comps.

I hope this is of any help! default smiley ^)

Not a crosser typically. I'm wondering about the successes of Selle x hanovarian. Anyone?

Thanks! I've not looked much at Western at all. I think I'll try her that way, lord knows I have enough show jumpers and cross country horses.
